Night of Discussion, Prayer, and Penance

Bishop LaValley has asked every parish in the Diocese of Ogdens-burg to dedicate one day during the month of September to prayer for the healing of all victims of sexual abuse by members of the Catholic clergy and to acts of penance in reparation to the Lord for the sins and scandals that have so grievously wounded his holy Church. Parishioners of St. Mary’s Parish are encouraged to observe Thursday, September 21 and/or Friday, September 22 as a day of fasting, as well as to commit to an hour of Eucharistic Adoration.

Thank you, Ellie!

Choirs and in fact the whole parish came together a couple of weeks ago to honor Ellie Beauvais. This is her last Sunday playing for us at the 9:00 AM Mass. Ellie, our lives have been so much more beautiful with you in them, but we understand that you need to go. We’ll be praying for you, please keep doing the same for us. And thank you!

St. Cecelia, patroness of musicians, Pray for Us!

MOVIE NIGHT Last week we announced a showing of the beautiful mov-ie about the lives of St. Paul and St. Luke for Thursday, September 20th. It has been postponed for the Listening Session and Prayer for the Church

Ask Father Stitt Last week we shared Bishop LaValley’s August 23rd Letter in re-sponse to the current scandals in the Church in which he asks us to pray and do penance. (See above for our planned response) A couple parishioners asked me the following:

Why should we do penance when we didn’t do anything wrong?

This is a great question. Thanks for asking. In Colossians 1:24 St. Paul says: “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.”

We are all parts of the Body of Christ. As such, what we do mat-ters for others because we are all connected. By accepting pen-ances for the suffering Church, we’re not primarily saying that we’re at fault for the awful crimes that have been committed. Instead, when we sacrifice for others, we are building up the Body of Christ.

Look at it this way, it’s been 25 years since I played a fall sport, but I still remember running laps with the soccer team. Coach Mace lived up to his name! (And I hated it.) But after a few weeks of laps, calisthenics, and other drills, we got better. And if I didn’t feel like practicing, Coach Mace sure didn’t say, “that’s okay, Bryan. You can take a break today.” In fact, if someone was really dragging (or worse), he made us all run longer and harder. It helped us grow physically. But even more it united us as one team.

We’re in this Church together—with all her beauty and all her sins. Let’s not only pray for each other, but let’s offer up our pen-ances, great and small for each other.

The Church & Community Program invites the public to its annu-al meeting (Mon, Sept 17) and to our Recognition Event (Wed, Sept 19). Both meeting and recognition event begin at 4 p.m. in the Community Room of Grasse River Heritage, located at 30 Court St. The Recognition Event includes presentation of a poster listing our business and organizational supporters and our two annual awards to an outstanding volunteer, Doug Quick, and to the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility, whose garden program has helped feed the hungry with good food. The event will include refreshments and will be from 4-4:30pm. The public, friends of the C&CP, and anyone interested in learning more about its mis-sion to support members of our community who are in need are all welcome to attend either or both events.

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us. Amen.

All kidding aside: If that last stand-up/sit down at the end of Mass is a strain, please feel free to remain seated during the Prayer after Commun-ion. Most Sundays Father will have announcements that you’ll want to be seated for. We all love worshiping with Body and Soul—but we don’t want to overdo it.

Bishop LaValley and the U.S. bishops urge our par-ticipation each Friday in a nationwide Novena for the Legal Protection of Human Life from August 3

-September 28. Participants will receive weekly email or text reminders to pray and fast, along with little-known facts about Roe v. Wade to share with others. Sign up at www.usccb.org/

Special request: My sister shared this wonderful idea with me:

My goal is for each of the students to have someone who is pray-ing for them throughout the school year. I have numbered our students from number 1 to number 68, and I would ask that you choose one number to pray for during this school year (names are confidential). Signup sheets with the numbers are on the back tables in the church, or you can email me with your number choice. ([email protected]) I’ll get back to you in case of duplication. What a gift for each of our students to have someone praying just for them!

Pray that they are successful in school, and have a happy home life. Pray that they have the strength and motivation to become their best selves. Pray that all of our teachers can be the teacher that each one of the students need this year.

New Traffic Signs

You may have noticed our new signage around the school. Some people have found them almost as con-fusing as the picture to the right.

To clarify: we’re trying to make the drop-off/pick-ups smoother for our school children. So during an hour in the morning (7:30 to 8:30) and an hour in the afternoon (2:00 to 3:00) every school day, there will be one way traffic starting from the rectory and heading through to the back of the chapel. Again: this is only for during school days. The times are listed on the signs.

Of course, all days we want you driving safely AND staying fo-cused that you are on THE Way!

1. Our First Class for Religious Education is this Sunday, Sept 9th at 10:00am. This will be a family gathering; in-cluding a time to "Meet the Catechists".

2. There is a Confirmation I/II parent/student meeting for all those who have children entering 7th grade and who are current-ly in our Confirmation program. This meeting will be this Sunday (Sept 9) at 6:30pm in the St. Mary's School Gym.

3. Please remember to send in your registration form/payment or you may register online at cantoncatholics.com, under the Faith Formation tab.

4. If you have not received a registration form/calendar for the 2018/2019 school year, please contact the Rectory at 315-386-2543 and one will be mailed to you.

St. James School, Gouverneur will hold their an-nual Chicken Bar-B-Que, Sunday, September 9, 11 am to 2 pm. Adults $10, children 12 and under $5, children under 5 free.

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mary CAMPAIGN NEWSLETTER Volume 1

Campaign Kick-off!

As you have probably already heard, Bishop LaValley has announced plans to address future needs across the Diocese of Ogdensburg.

This has led us to kick-off of the It’s Our Church, It’s Our Future Capital Campaign. The funds raised from this Diocesan-wide effort will help us address the many Parish Needs we have here at St. Mary’s Church, Our Seminarians: developing and education of our future priests, Our Retired Priests: cover out of pocket medical expense, Our Cathedral: preservation and maintenance and Camp Guggenheim: upgrades and improvements to the facilities. In addition, this campaign will fund the 2018 Bishop’s Fund Appeal and provide millions in funding to our local parishes and missions across the Diocese of Ogdensburg.

This project is a tremendous undertaking, and it is important that everyone is well informed. Over the next two months, we will be hosting a series of informative receptions here at St. Mary’s Church. As the campaign progresses, each of you will receive an invitation. These receptions will be an opportunity for fellowship with each other and to ask any questions you might have.

For now, you can help us most by praying daily for the success of the It’s Our Church, It’s Our Future Capital Campaign. Pray that we will be successful on a Diocesan level as well as right here at St. Mary’s Church. We will be sharing more information through the mail, from the pulpit, and in the bulletin in the weeks to come.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

Its’ Our Church, It’s Our Future Begins!

All parishes in the Diocese of Ogdensburg are joining together to support the It’s Our

Church, It’s Our Future Capital Campaign. The campaign seeks to raise $16 million over

the next 4 years to prepare our faith family for the future. At its heart, this campaign

is about supporting our parishes, our future priests, our retired priests, our

Cathedral, Camp Guggenheim and the 2018 Bishop’s Fund Appeal. The $16 million will be used for the following

purposes:

In the coming weeks, our Campaign Leadership Team will be providing more

information about the campaign and details about each of its purposes. Their goal is to

make sure every parishioner knows what this campaign is about and how we are being

called to participate.

Please take the time during the next few weeks to learn more about the campaign and

the needs we will address together.

DAY OF PRAYER AND PENANCE: For the victims of sexual abuse by the clergy and for the purification of the Church

In response to requests by our Pope and Bishop, St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg will host a Day of Prayer and Penance: for the victims of sexual abuse by the clergy and for the purification of the Church.

The mystical Body of Christ, the Church, is grievously wounded by these betrayals. Please join us in prayer and penance on Friday, Sept 14, the Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross, beginning with 12 noon Mass in St. Mary's Cathedral. The day will continue with adoration of the Holy Eucharist and praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:00 pm. We will conclude with Benediction at 5pm.

May all who have suffered find healing and strength, and may our Church reflect anew the true holiness of the Body of Christ!
