Dear Cathedralites

It’s been a monumental week in the life of this Diocese and the Cathedral. Thank you to all of you who turned out on Thursday night, especially to the choir, and to Nicky with her team who did us proud with the wonderful catering. The 7 pm Word and Worship music team also took part in leading the service during this wonderful time when we were together prior to electoral synod. I write this anticipating that by now we will have a new bishop. However, this person has to be ratified by bishops throughout the three Tikanga which will take quite some time. It’s a great weekend for the Fitchett whanau as they gather together in this very special Cathedral to baptise Alexander (Alex) John Thurston, son of Sarah and Boyd Thurston, and Grandson of John and Kaye Fitchett with Godparents being Great- Uncle Tony Fitchett and Great-Aunt Bron Medlicott-Fitchett. After the service we will be burying the ashes of Alexander’s Great-grandmother Edith, Great-Grandfather, Ivan, and Great-Uncle Alan Fitchett. After more than 15 years in the waiting a memorial garden has finally been completed. Many thanks to the Fitchett whanau who have helped make this happen. You can read in the 10 am booklet of the amazing Anglican connections of this extended family. It is Shrove Tuesday this Tuesday, our usual Shrove Tuesday pancake party in the Deanery, pizzas included. It is $5.00 for a family in total or $2.00 per person. Come and join us from 5.30pm onwards. I am very keen that many of us at the Cathedral join with St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Father Bill on this Wednesday at 7 pm for our combined Ash Wednesday service. In the past they have come to us but this year we are to repay the favour. This is a grand opportunity for us to be ecumenical. I want us to turn up in big numbers.

Patsy and I will be away in Takaka in our little caravan from Thursday to the following week. I am looking forward to exploring that part of the country. It’s lovely to know that Father Steve’s leg is getting better by the day and he is becoming much more mobile. Praise God!

Those receiving Holy Communion are invited to do so EITHER by intinction, i.e. retaining

the wafer when it is given to you and then dipping it in the cup of wine before consuming it

OR by consuming the wafer when it is given to you and then drinking from the common

cup.

HEALTH ADVISORY NOTICE:

Worshippers experiencing Cold or Influenza-like illnesses or associated symptoms are

advised to refrain from partaking of the practice of “Intinction” with the wafer or using the

“Common Cup” during the communion ceremony. Clearly labelled wine and fruit juice

alternatives are provided utilising the small thimble glasses. This recommendation is an

important personal and public health issue which conforms with the Cathedral’s Health &

Safety requirements.

Thanks to those who helped at CAMEO on Friday. It’s wonderful to see people hav-ing a grand time of fellowship with each other. There were lots of laughs. Again, thanks to Sally, Bruce and the catering team for the wonderful meal they provided. There was a bumper crowd at Loaves and Fishes on Thursday. I learnt all about life in some on Nelson’s housing estates! I decided at the last minute to attend the Hollie’s concert here in Nelson on Wednesday night. It was brilliant, as they played the old favourites. Only a 5minute bike ride away from the Deanery. It’s wonderful living in central Nelson!! Go the Crusaders and the Black Caps. the pulpit. When Christians did not

act, the officials erased the first

commandment themselves, and later

forced church members to remove

the whole display. We pray that our

brothers and sisters, who had been

forced to remove the cross from their

church building just three months

earlier, will stand firm and continue to

glorify the Lord Jesus in whose Name

we pray. Amen

HEALTH & SAFETY NOTICE

The Health and Safety Act 2015: In May 2018 a small Health and Safety committee was

formed to address the various responsibilities that the Act requires with reference to the

running of the Cathedral. The Dean was identified in the Act as the PCBU (a person

conducting a business or undertaking). This puts very onerous responsibilities on the

Dean. The task of the committee was to identify these responsibilities and to attend to any

matters that were identified as requiring attention and mitigation. These matters cover a

wide range from natural disaster risks, safety of children to maintenance of equipment, and

are reviewed regularly. The Dean is required to sign a letter to the Bishop annually stating

that the Cathedral complies with the regulations and noting any outstanding matters of

Health & Safety. The Vestry is also required to sign a letter to the Bishop on similar lines.

The Diocesan office has a number of guidelines and material that we are using to ensure

we meet our obligations. Although the Dean is the PCBU we all have a responsibility to

ensure we do not endanger ourselves or others with our actions.

Fire & Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) Fire Safety, Evacuation Procedures and

Evacuation Schemes Regulations 2018: In May 2018 the regulations for this Act were

updated. An application has been made to FENZ, and was recently accepted. The main

issue affecting everyone in the parish is the need to carry out fire evacuation drills every six

months. These are recorded by FENZ. The clergy are approved as the fire wardens with the

Dean being the Chief Fire Warden. The logical reason for this is that they are in the best

position to control things in an emergency. In the Dean's absence then the service leader

will be Chief Warden. Parishioners are expected to follow their directions in any emergency

event. Yellow Jackets and Safety Helmets will identify the Wardens. Warning of a fire will

be carried out by three long blasts of a whistle or by public address system or by shouting

"FIRE!". The whistles will be installed in red break glass call point boxes as follows: one at

the entrance, one on each side of the nave, one in the sanctuary and one in the Vestry area.

During these drills please proceed to the nearest emergency exit, and follow the directions

of the wardens. If you notice someone in need of assistance, please provide this if you are

able. The assembly points are at the top of the cathedral steps and also in the main car

park by the information board. Both assembly points are sign posted. Prior to the com-

mencement of concerts and special events with the general public present, whoever is run-

ning the event will make a special announcement regarding the position of exits etc. We

are obliged to carry out these requirements, as it is the law of the land.

Earthquake: Civil Defense recommend ‘Drop cover and hold’ in the event of an earthquake.

If you are unable to get under a pew, please adopt the emergency brace position and cover

your head/neck with your arms. It is not recommended to run outside. After an earthquake

follow the instructions of the wardens.
