Pentecost is often cal led the ?bi r thday of the Church.? When the Holy Spiri t descended upon the apostles and the holy women on that fi rst Pentecost, the Church was born. These 21 centuries later we are that same Church. As the fi rst disciples were, we are those cal led to bring the Good News of Jesus to the world. On our ?bi r thday? this year, I want to describe who you are as God?s Church.

You are a people created in the image and l ikeness of God. Your caring hearts have accomplished more than we could ever have dreamed imaginable. You

have raised, fed, clothed and educated your chi ldren. You have saved friends on the brink of disaster. You have been generous in support ing the Church. You have given your precious t ime to carry out the ministry of Jesus through part icipation in the parish. Perhaps once on the threshold of despair you bounced back because you trusted God?s presence wi th you. You have been broken by hate, division, misplaced trust, infidel i ty or some other hurt and let yourself be put back together again by God?s heal ing love.

Your loving eyes have looked into someone else?s hopeless eyes and given them a spark of hope. Those eyes have cried tears at the loss of loved ones, yours or somebody else?s. They have wept over other losses, be i t jobs or relat ionships, lost dreams or hopes. Those eyes have also danced and spark led at t imes of joy and happiness, again, yours or others.

Your strong and generous hands have gotten sore and bruised from countless hours of hard work. They have warmed the cold hands of those whose l ives are cold. They have held the broken body and soul of a pained or hurt lover, relat ive or friend. Those hands have been raised up in thanks and praise to God. They have held Jesus? precious body and blood to receive him in the Eucharist.

Centuries ago, Jesus breathed on the apostles and said, ?Receive the Holy Spiri t" (John 20:19-21). As God?s Church, al ive wi th that same Spiri t , those caring hearts, loving eyes and strong and generous hands bring the very l i fe of God to a world in need. How beauti ful you are, God?s holy people. Happy bi r thday!

THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCEThank you for your recent part icipation in the American Red Cross blood drive at Christ Cathedral. We registered 22 donors at the May 6 blood drive and col lected 19 pints of blood ? providing l i fe-giving blood to up to 57 hospi tal patients in need. Thank you for your support. Our next blood drive on campus is October 28.

MEMORIAL DAY MASS Join Fr. Christopher Smith for a special Memorial Day Mass honoring our nation's fal len heroes and praying for peace in our world. It wi l l take place on Monday, May 28 at 10:00 a.m. fol lowed by a patriot ic observance wi thin the Cathedral Memorial Gardens Cemetery, located on campus at 11:00 a.m. Al l are welcomed to remember the fal len as we uni te in prayer for our nation and our world. This wi l l be the only Mass that wi l l take place on this day.

The morning camp wi l l be held June 25-29 on the Christ Cathedral Campus in Garden Grove. Pentecostés es a menudo l lamado el "cumpleaños de la Iglesia". Cuando el Espíri tu Santo descendió sobre los apóstoles y las mujeres santas en ese primer Pentecostés, nació la Iglesia. Estos 21 siglos después somos la misma Iglesia. Como fueron los primeros discípulos, somos los l lamados a traer la Buena Nueva de Jesús al mundo. En nuestro "cumpleaños" este año, quiero describi r quién eres como la iglesia de Dios.

Eres un pueblo creado a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Sus corazones cariñosos han logrado más de lo que jamás hubiéramos soñado imaginable. Has criado,

al imentado, vestido y educado a tus hi jos. Has salvado a tus amigos al borde del desastre. Has sido generoso en apoyar a la iglesia. Has dado tu preciado t iempo para l levar a cabo el ministerio de Jesús a través de la part icipación en la parroquia. Posiblemente una vez en el borde de la desesperación te recuperaste porque confiaste en la presencia de Dios en t i mismo. Has sido quebrantado por el odio, la división, la confianza mal puesta, la infidel idad u otro t ipo de daño y has dejado que el amor curativo de Dios te sane nuevamente.

Tus ojos amorosos han mirado a los ojos desesperados de otra persona y les han dado una chispa de esperanza. Esos ojos han l lorado lágrimas por la pérdida de un ser querido, los tuyos o los de otra persona. Han l lorado por otras pérdidas, ya sean trabajos o relaciones, sueños perdidos o esperanzas. Esos ojos también han bai lado y bri l lado en momentos de alegría y fel icidad, de nuevo, tuyos o de otros.

Sus manos fuertes y generosas se han vuelto doloridas y magul ladas de incontables horas de trabajo duro. Han calentado las manos frías de aquel los cuyas vidas están frías. Han sostenido el cuerpo y el alma quebrantado de un amante, de un fami l iar o de un amigo que sufre dolor o esta lastimado. Esas manos han sido levantadas en agradecimiento y alabanza a Dios. El las han sostenido el preciado cuerpo y la sangre de Jesús al recibi rlo en la Eucaristía.

Hace siglos, Jesús sopló sobre los apóstoles y di jo: "Reciban el Espíri tu Santo? (Juan 20:19-21). Como la Iglesia de Dios, viva con ese mismo Espíri tu, esos corazones cariñosos, esos ojos amorosos y las manos fuertes y generosas traen la vida misma de Dios a un mundo en necesidad. Qué hermoso eres, pueblo santo de Dios. ¡Fel iz cumpleaños!

GRACIAS POR HACER LA DIFERENCIA Gracias por su respuesta y part icipación en la donación de sangre de la Cruz Roja American que tuvimos aquí en la Catedral de Cristo. El 6 de mayo tuvimos 22 donadores y colectamos 19 pintas de sangre ? sangre para hasta 57 pacientes necesi tados que están hospi tal izados. Gracias por su apoyo. Nuestra siguiente feche para

MISA DE MEMORIAL DAYAcompañen al Padre Christopher Smith en una Misa especial el lunes, 28 de mayo a las 10:00 a.m. en conmemoración de Memorial Day. Después de Misa tendremos una ceremonia en Cathedral Memorial Gardens Cemetery, nuestro panteón aquí en el campus, en el cual nos uni remos en oración al recordaremos a todos nuestros soldados que han perdido sus vidas en batal las por nuestra nación y el mundo. Esta será la única Misa este día.

Misa en Cel ebr ación de 40 años de or denación del Padr e Chr ist opher Smit h Todos están invi tados a la celebración del 40 Aniversario de Ordenación del Padre Christopher Smith. Tendremos una Misa el viernes, 1 de junio a las 6:30 p.m. Después de Misa habrá una recepción. Las Misas regulares de 5:30 p.m. y 6:30 p.m. se uni rán en esta celebración; no tendremos confesiones después de Misa el 1 de junio.
