Chopta is an offbeat tourist destination suitable for trekking enthusiasts. It can be reached by car from Rishikesh in

8-9 hours via Rudraprayag and Okhimath. It is famous for alpine forest landscape, beautiful himalayan meadows

with lush green landscapes and is surrounded by snow-clad mountains. We went there in May, 2005 and the trip

could be completed within 3-4 days from Delhi and our expenses were around Rs. 1400/- per head for the entire trip

which included Tungnath and Deoria Tal.

How to reach Chopta

Bus : There is only one bus per day on the Ukhimath-Chopta route. Alternately, you might try to take a bus or

shared jeep to Makhu Bend and then trek the 7 to 8 km to Chopta.

Train : Rishikesh (209 km) is the nearest railhead to Chopta.

Flight : The Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun 226 km) is the nearest Airport to Chopta.

Trek To Deoria Tal

About the Attraction : Sari village, about 10 km from Ukhimath is the base from where the trek to Deoriatal trek

begins. The trek meanders through the village and the trail is not paved but well marked. One may need a guide to

on this trek. Deoriatal is the captivating lake that is surrounded by forest all around. The reflection of the mighty

Chaukhamba peak in lake looks beautiful. One can pitch a tent and stay there for the night. Various agencies also

offer tented accommodation at Deoriatal.

About the Attraction : Chandrashila is one Km further from Tungnath and is a beatiful mountain summit from

where most of the snowclad mountains of Himalaya are visible in a breathtaking panoramic view. But you have to

reach early in the morning to get a clear sky.

About the Attraction : Tungnath trek is one of the most beautiful and easy treks in the region. The trek to Tungnath

starts from Chopta, which is nothing but a cluster of a few shops and shacks serving basic local food. Tungnath is

one of the Panch Kedars and is situated at 3660 meters above sea level.

The trail to Tungnath is well paved and wide, so much so you can complete the trek (up and down) in a day.

There are a few options to stay overnight at Tungnath but the accommodation available is very basic. One can also

trek to Chandrashila peak, 1 km (1 hr) from Tungnath to watch the spectacular sun rise. You may not need a guide

for this trek as the trail is well marked.
