Material & Method:The present study comprised of 60 patients with impacted mandibular third molar. They were randomly divided into two equal groups Group I (Surgical procedure performed by Chisel & Mallet), Group II (Surgical procedure performed by Surgical Bur).Standard Wards Incision was used to expose the Impacted Mandibular Third Molar in both the groups. Exposure was followed by the removal of overlying bone to expose the crown with the help of Chisel & Mallet in Group I and by Surgical Bur in Group II. Statistical Analysis: At the end of the study following measures has been used to evaluate two different tooth removal techniques. Mean, Chi-square test, Standard Deviation, Paired "t" test, Confidence Limit Results: Present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of chisel and mallet versus Surgical bur technique for removal of impacted third molar. Pain reduction was more in group I than in group II. Mouth opening reduction was more in Group-II than Group-I. There was non- significant difference in swelling in Group-I and Group-II at different Time Intervals. Incidence of wound dehiscence and dry socket was more in Group-I than Group-II. Paresthesia incidence was more in Group-II than Group-I. Conclusions: In our opinion chisel and mallet will be better opinion than with the bur as it had less morbidity than Surgical bur which in turn is also cost effective. 1 2 3 4 5 Devesh Tiwari, Iqbal Ali, Subodh Natu, Abu Amir, Saad Ahmed, Gaurav K Saha, Gayatri Dental Clinic. 647/F/222/1, sector - I Shiv Vihar Colony, 2 3 Jankipuram, Lucknow, Prof. and Head, Career Institute of Dental Sciences, Lucknow, Senior Lecturer, 3 4 Department of Oral Surgery, BBD Dental College Lucknow , India.
