Well done to the Top 10 shops in

the 2016 National Fish and Chip

Awards. I can’t believe this year has

gone so quickly and that soon we will

all be gathering in London to see who is

crowned as champion!

Our fantastic ‘Top Trumps’ feature is

back as we highlight the Driwite six best

young friers in the UK. The Chippy Chat

Ball is on Sunday December 6th. We have

already have (as of Sept 23) over 200

people attending. It looks like its heading

for a sell-out but we may just have an odd

table or few spaces left for you to join the

party, or indeed wish to sponsor this great

chip shop night out.

Finally we take a look at Howe and

Co, they’ve been delivering mobile fish

and chips since the 1930s, they’re now

celebrating their 85th birthday and they

are all set to keep on truckin’.

“Kayleigh seems to be able to turn her hand to any form of art – animals and landscapes, oils and watercolours

and more! She only lives a couple of doors from us so we asked her to create a picture of Shap Chippy to hang in our restaurant. We’re delighted with it!” said Georgina Perkins, co-owner of Shap Chippy.

Kayleigh graduated from York St John University last year with a fine arts degree. Since then she has worked locally – including at Shap Chippy – while building her art portfolio. “I have been getting some commissions, mainly of people’s pets which I enjoy doing, but when I was asked to come up with ideas for the chip shop picture it was quite exciting!” she said.

Shap Chippy was the 2015 best new comer in the National Fish and Chip Awards. Georgina said at the time of their victory

“Being a National Award winner means we have had a lot of coverage on the radio, Twitter,

Facebook, local papers etc… A huge thank you to all our staff past and present – running a chippy is a real team effort. And thanks to our customers – without your support and feedback we wouldn’t care so much about getting it right!

Winning “Best Newcomer” at the UK Fish and Chip Awards has brought in lots of fish and chip tourists (two years ago we didn’t know there were fish and chip tourists!) as of course has word of mouth – thank you.

Chip Art!The owners of Shap Chippy were so impressed by their neighbour’s talent they not only commissioned a picture but also gave Kayleigh Richardson a wall on which to exhibit some of her work.

Fishing is the main industry of the Faroe Islands and to protect local culture, the second largest city Klaksvik holds

the Fishermans Festival in August every year. The festival is celebrated by the local residents with a series of events including competitions, exhibitions and lectures.

JKF’s history goes back a century, to the early days of commercial fishing in the Faroe Islands, its home town of Klaksvik owes much of its development to the success of JFK during the early decades.

To help with the celebrations this year, JFK flew to the island Papa’s Barn, Ditton, (named the best fish and chip shop in Kent). JFK also arranged a temporary shop and imported potatoes from Isle of Ely Produce, Cambridgeshire for the Papa’s team to serve up fish and chips to the thousands of people of the Faroe Islands.

Gavin Lewis from Papas Barn says: “We were invited to go and fry fish and chips in the Faroes by Rebecca Lord of Friars Pride

and JFK. It was really out of the blue but we jumped at the chance.

Hanus and Jogvan are amazing host’s, we got to see all over the Islands and they are stunning.  We used Gadus as the shop, which is a JFK vessel. So we knew the quality of the fish, this was an opportunity to show them what we can do.

On the day of the festival we knew it was not going to be easy but we were up for the challenge. The food on the day was due to finish at 4-5pm. However demand was so great that we didn’t actually stop until 11pm!

“As long as there is a queue Papas will serve Fish and Chips”

Over 4000 portions of fish and chips were served with Mushy peas, a pickle and a drink, all for free thanks to JFK.  Everyone really enjoyed themselves. It was calculated that we served over 4000 portions of fish and chips – 1 portion every 10 seconds for 12 hours!

The next day as Craig (Papas chef) and I entered a local restaurant, all the patrons stood and applauded us. It was like we were celebrities, we turned to look around at first not really understanding but, everyone was so happy with their fish and chips”.

Papa’s Barn has also been invited to return to the Fisherman’s Festival next year.

JFK and The Fishermans Festival – Klaksvik, Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are an island group situated between the Norwegian Sea and

the North Atlantic Ocean, with a population of around 50,000. The total area is about

1,400 square kilometres.

From Springbok to

...However, while South Africans might enjoy fish & chips on occasion they certainly don’t

have the traditional and iconic status that they do here in the UK. All of which makes finding a South African family running a Chip shop in a small North Yorkshire market town quite surprising.

Janis and Paul Rowlston came to the UK in 2005 hoping to find a more sustainable life for their young family. Initially they ran a catering business in the South West of England but, after much looking for the right business, they visited Potter Hill Fisheries in Pickering and knew they had found a new home.

With family already in the business – running the very popular Green Hut Fisheries in Lepton outside Huddersfield – Janis and son Conner received their initial training at the Green Hut and that training was then supplemented and built upon by the previous owner of Potter Hill during the hand-over and then by the long term

staff members who helped to make their transition seamless.

With son Conner frying, daughter Jemma helping behind the counter and husband Paul mostly cheer-leading while he works on projects in Africa, Janis runs a tight ship. Everyone working hard, everyone having fun and everyone committed to providing the very best products and even better service.

With Pickering being a local tourist hub, a large chunk of Potter Hill’s trade is visitors to the Market Town – with a focus on traditional Fish & Chips and the usual trimmings. But, as important as the holiday trade is, Janis says that it is the local trade she really concentrates on. Not being Pickering natives – husband Paul is from Nottingham originally and Janis is South African – Janis knew from the outset that what she needed to do was make a home in Pickering, becoming part of the community and providing a consistent level of service to the locals in

South Africa is a country with lots of rich traditions and lots of traditional foods, from Biltong (Beef Jerky) to Anchovy Paste (it’s actually quite tasty), to ‘Run-aways’ (chicken feet!) Mpoane worms (that’s right, actual worms!) and smilies

(Cooked sheep’s head – yes you read that right!)...

Page 11: Chippy Chat October

a very competitive environment. In this, says Janis, she is very much

assisted by her hard working team of locals. One of Janis’ fryers has been working in the business since before the previous owner bought Potter Hill and has provided much needed continuity during their all-important first year. Their other Fryer has trained up during the year but is already very much part of the family. Added to the team of three fryers is a group of young, fun, enthusiastic counter staff who follow Janis’ lead and offer everyone a happy greeting and friendly smile – free of charge.

Having bought the business just before the summer season in 2014, their first year at Potter Hill has been a baptism in fire, but what has surprised Janis the most is how quickly Pickering and the business started to feel like home and how comfortable they now feel in their little slice of North Yorkshire heaven. Now, with their second successful summer season just past, Janis is comfortable at the helm of her little ship and hoping to steer it to bigger and better things.

Great news for them as they have just been announced in the top 10 best newcomers list for the 2016 Fish and Chip Awards!

Howe and Co Fish and Chips started with just two vans when it was founded by William Howe in 1930.

But all these years later the business is still going strong, with five vans covering over 100 villages and towns across Bucks and Northants.

Jamie Bachman, who works for the firm, said: “As the demand for fish and chips grew so did the company.

“We bought a third van and then a fourth visiting more and more areas.

“Now based in Little Horwood, we travel as far as Bugbrooke in Northamptonshire and Oakley in Bucks serving hundreds of hungry people every week.”

He added: “The success of our company

we believe is down to the hardworking staff, great quality products and most importantly our loyal customer base.”

To mark the anniversary Howe and Co has launched a hunt on Facebook for their longest standing customer, via their page.

They also held a free givaway for customers, awarding 85 prizes, one for every year of the landmark anniversary.

Jamie added: “Whether it’s locals in the village pub, or the many senior citizens we see on a Friday the national love of fish and chips is one tradition that is most definitely not dying out.

“There’s even a select few that have been visiting the van for over 30 years.

“They wait patiently for the van week after week year after year, always showing their support.”

Valerie Storer, wife of the founder of Pukka Pies, developed her classic recipe from her home kitchen in the

same year that the Leicestershire-based family business began in 1963.

From the end of September this year, pie lovers up and down the country will be able to enjoy the flavours of Mrs Storer’s famous Chicken and Mushroom Pukka Pie based on the original recipe, which is guaranteed to deliver dinner-time satisfaction by offering even more chicken flavour than before. The key change is the addition of an extra chicken stock, which gives it a meatier fuller flavour

Featuring the finest pieces of tender chicken and mushroom in a rich, creamy sauce, Pukka Pies’ decision to base the changes on the original recipe comes from the family company’s desire to give its customers the best-possible taste experience and deliver products of the highest-quality.

Pukka Pies’ Brand Manager, Sally Voss, explains: “Having fed the nation for over fifty years, some of our customers today remember Pukka Pies from the 1960s. With

most things, the original is often the best, which is why we decided to base the new recipe on Mrs Storer’s original chicken and Mushroom recipe.

“The decision endorses our family values and reiterates our focus on quality. We have, and always will, pride ourselves on providing good, honest food. We are confident this recipe refresh will satisfy the nation’s taste buds!”

The UK’s no.1 pie brand has produced a ‘retro’ feel poster in support of this launch, which is free of charge along with all the other point of sale material. It shows a mouth-watering picture of the delicious revived recipe and historic photographs of the company dating

back to the early days before automation when all the pies were made by hand.

The company started life in Leicester in 1963, when husband and father-of-three Trevor Storer quit his job and founded ‘Trevor’s Homemade Pie Company’, to set about making and selling great-tasting pies; they proved to be a massive hit.

In 1964, Trevor renamed the company ‘Pukka Pies’ and the company has been feeding families ever since. To this day, Pukka Pies remains an independent, family-run business passionate about pies.

Pukka Pies makes over 60 million pies and pasties every year, which are created by dedicated and caring people, using the best ingredients sourced from the most trusted suppliers in state of the art facilities. Each Pukka Pie boasting a flavoursome filling, generous chunks of quality, hand-butchered meat and over 140 layers of crispy pastry.

The revived, classic Chicken and Mushroom Pie recipe will be available from the end of September 2015 in fish and chip shops, butchers, bakers and many more foodservice takeaway outlets, up and down the country.

For more information, visit www.pukkapies.co.uk Follow on Twitter @pukkapies and at www.facebook.com/pukkapiespukkapies.

Dining trends and consumer interest in seafood sustainability are driving fish and chip shop owners and

customers to look to the MSC and its blue ecolabel for full reassurance that the fish they are serving or eating, comes from certified sustainable sources.

Fish and chip shop owners keen to be at the forefront of their sector, are looking to the MSC so their customers can enjoy plenty of great tasting certified sustainable seafood.

Approximately 50 fish and chip shops currently have MSC certification

There’s been an increase in small groups and single site chippies getting MSC certification across the UK and now include; Bristol, Wales, Northern Ireland and Dublin, in Ireland.

Certified chippies have recently started introducing a greater variety of MSC seafood to their menu’s, including shellfish like crab, scallops and mussels.

Now approximately 30 MSC certified FAS and fresh seafood suppliers cover the UK’s certified chippies

The range (and quantity) of MSC certified fish species suitable for fish and chip restaurants has increased significantly in the last year due to North East Atlantic fisheries (cod and haddock) and the Cornish hake fishery getting certified

There has been a small increase in fish and chip shops extending their service of MSC certified fish dinners to mobile or event catering.

Winning ways with certified sustainable seafood…The last 3 annual winners of The National Fish and Chip Awards, Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award have been won by MSC certified chippiesentrants for the National Fish and Chip Awards with MSC certified fish & chip restaurants is up, year on year with 7 out of the 10 regional winners all certified. many MSC certified chippies are award winning and hold the NFFF’s Quality AwardAdrian Fusco, Owner of Quayside Fish & Chips, in Whitby, is clear about the reasons why restaurant and takeaway owners should make the effort to get MSC certified fish and seafood on their menu.

“We realised that to remain competitive, we had to add value to our end product by communicating ‘responsibly sourced’ and ‘sustainable fishery’ to our customers. There is no better way to do this than displaying the MSC ecolabel.”

MSC certified chippies lead in seafood sustainabilitySignificant numbers of fish and chip shops have recently gained Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification – offering MSC certified sustainable fish to customers in the UK and Ireland.

York and Helmsley locals served sustainable fish and chipsAward-winning, family friendly chippy Scotts of Helmsley has achieved Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification to serve up sustainable fish suppers to York and Helmsley locals. This means that all the MSC certified fish on both of their restaurant menus can be traced back to sustainable, well-managed fisheries.Tony Webster, owner of Scotts of Helmsley and Scotts at Bilbrough, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this important industry accreditation for both our Helmsley and York fish and chip shops.“This international certification means that environmentally-conscious customers dining at Scotts can be assured that our supply of fish only comes from sustainable sources.”

Record Breaker!Plymouth’s Kingfisher Fish and Chips has set a new world record. It has more MSC certified sustainable choices on its menu than any other fish and chip shop or restaurant in the world. Run by Craig Maw, his partner Nikki and their 18 strong team, Kingfisher Fish and Chips has always had sustainable fish sourcing at the front of all of their minds.“We are very proud to offer our customers MSC certified sustainable seafood,” Craig told MSC.  “Since purchasing  Kingfisher, sustainable fish sourcing and providing customer confidence in all things was paramount. I could see where things were going in our industry regarding fish sourcing and we didn’t want to sit back and wait for things to happen. We became very proactive in what we did, we wanted to become industry leaders a shining light in responsible sourcing.”The impressive arrange of sustainable seafood includes cod and haddock from the Arctic Sea, Jersey lobster, prawns, pollock, salmon and even kippers. * “MSC certification is recognised in more and more places, the ecolabel is in the forefront for sustainable fish certification and consumer confidence. This is why we openly endorse MSC certification and the ecolabel. As a shop it gives us great

satisfaction, and this ripples from within. Our team know how hard we work to source sustainably, and our customers appreciate it too.”

Oliver’s ArmyOliver’s has become the first fish and chips restaurant or takeaway on Teesside to achieve certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

Oliver’s is run by husband-and-wife team Michael and Helen Roberts. Head fryer Michael said the certification meant the Bath Street business had been recognised for an ongoing commitment to protecting the world’s sea grounds and fish supplies now and into the future.“This is something we’ve been doing for some time now but the certification means that the MSC have recognised that we are setting the standards for others to follow within our industry.“Whilst serving up fish and chips as a traditional taste of the North-east coast, it’s satisfying to know that we are helping to protect the fish, the oceans and the fishing industry as a whole for future generations.“That can only be good for Oliver’s and our customers.” Oliver’s cod supplies are caught in the sea grounds of Norway and delivered directly to the business only via MSC certified suppliers.

Bristol FashionThe award-winning Bishopston Fish bar, on Gloucester Road Bristol has gained

MSC certification which means all their fish is certified sustainable and traceable and no bears the well-recognised blue fish-tick mark.

Owner Nick Lomvardos is clearly delighted with the news that they can now add the MSC’s sustainability certificate to the collection of quality award marks and national competition results from recent years. “It’s fantastic news! Whilst we were already serving some sustainable fish we are now able to prove to our customers, through the use of the well-known blue ecolabel, all our cod and haddock are quality, certified sustainable fish. These MSC fish can be traced through the certified supply chain, which adhere to the MSC’s rigorous standards, right through to the source - to trawlers belonging to MSC certified well-managed fisheries.”I’m passionate about serving the best fish and chips, and so proud to have achieved certification – which means, by choosing and serving MSC sustainable fish to customers we can all do our bit towards maintaining the wild fish stocks in the ocean.”

We’ve decided again to recreate our Top Trump Cards to help you decide your favourite!

To get to this stage and secure a place in the coveted shortlist, the friers have undergone a gruelling judging process involving telephone interviews and exam questionnaires. They were also subject to a rigorous judging day at the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Training School in Leeds, Yorkshire. Their skills were truly put to the test as they demonstrated their preparation and frying techniques before undergoing personal interviews and assessments in front of four separate judging panels.

Celebrating the best young fish friers across the country, The Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year Award encourages the younger generation in the industry to nurture their individual skills and talent to become

positive role models for other young people working in the fish and chip sector.

Briar Wilkinson, Sales and Marketing Director at Drywite Ltd, commented: “We’ve been running this competition for 20 years now and this year the standard of entries has again been exceptionally high.

“The competition was conceived in 1995 by myself and Kelvin Lee in memory of our late father who had been associated with fish frying for over sixty years and always had a passion for encouraging young people to succeed.

“Our goal for the competition was to demonstrate how worthwhile a career in fish frying could be for talented young people in the industry – I’m sure my father would’ve been so proud of the high-standards that have been set due to this award and how it has also inspired the formation of the Young Friers Group.”

NFFF Training and Accreditation Manager and member of the judging panel of this award category, Richard Wardell, added: “The standard of the 10 semi-finalists was yet again very high, with each candidate being a credit to themselves and the fish and chip industry. “It was great to be able to judge both those individuals who had entered the competition previously along with some new faces. Deciding who progressed to the final stage of the competition was once again a difficult task for the judging panel.”

The six finalists will now receive a mystery judging visit at their respective workplace, combined with another test of their skills and knowledge whilst in their own working environment. This final round of judging will determine the first, second and third winning places which will be announced at the 2016 awards ceremony at The Lancaster London Hotel on 20 January 2016.

A Stonehaven chippy has been hitting the news recently for two very different

reasons!

First they hit national headlines when the local council told them to remove a banner advertising their famous

deep fried mars bars. The birthplace of the deep-fried Mars bar (which was disputed by a chip shop in Bedfordshire) has been ordered to remove a poster advertising the battered delicacy.

Twenty-three years ago the Haven, now the Carron Fish Bar, was the chip shop where a fish fryer was asked by a schoolboy  to batter and fry a Mars bar.

The sticky treat hit the headlines around the world and ever since visitors have flocked to Stonehaven to try it. But then an Aberdeenshire Council delegation have written a stuffy letter to owner Lorraine Watson asking her to remove the banner.

But Lorraine, who has just spent £80,000 refurbishing

her shop, fumed: “That banner must have been there for nearly 10 years. Are they joking?

“We bring thousands of people to the town from all over the world to purchase a deep-fried Mars bar from its birthplace.

“There must be thousands of photographs all over the world of people standing underneath the banner smiling from ear to ear. It’s absolutely bloody ridiculous. I’m not taking it down.”

Not only have they kept the banner up but a local sign company have made them a plaque too.

Then eighties pop icon Toyah Willcox who played Stonehaven Town Hall recently on a Friday and Saturday night enjoyed fish and chips on both nights from Carrons.

The former punk princess - whose biggest hit was ‘It’s A Mystery’, said ahead of her gigs said she was looking forward to her fish and chips.

Toyah said: “I was really looking forward to the show as we’d never been to Stonehaven and it was great to have the chance to go there.

“I was looking forward to the fish and chips, last time I was in Aberdeen area I had these amazing fish and chips so I’m looking forward to that as well as haggis.

Is there Life On Mars!

Daddy Cool!

The fan favourite Daddy Cool was joined by Wildcat players Kevin Locke, Scott Anderson and Nick

Scruton as they sampled the menu at the Calder Island restaurant. Never one to shy away from a challenge, starting prop Nick Scruton tackled the Whaler’s signature giant haddock, just about

finishing the whale sized fillet of fish. The visit was the ideal

opportunity for Wetherby Whaler’s own mascot to meet his Wildcat counterpart. The two seemed to get along just fine, playing around and posing for

photos with staff and customers. This will be the second season

that family-run Wetherby Whaler has sponsored Daddy Cool having begun

their relationship with the rugby league club last season.

Phillip Murphy, Co-owner of the Wetherby Whaler, said: “Within Wakefield the Wildcats are a source of local pride and we are delighted to be able to support them.

“It was fantastic to have Kevin, Scott and Nick visit us with Daddy Cool. Our

customers got a real surprise to see the players and mascots in the restaurant.

“Everyone was all too happy to sign autographs and it was great for Wally and Daddy Cool to finally meet. I think they really hit it off!”

Phillip added: “We’re proud to support our local teams and we wish the Wildcats all the best for the rest of the season.”

Trinity Wildcat prop, Nick Scruton, added: “I would like to thank the Wetherby Whaler for supporting Daddy Cool and the team – and for the lunch!

“The fish and chips were as fantastic as always. The other lads were very jealous that we got to visit, so we will have to organise a team meal here to make up for it!”

In addition to Wakefield, Wetherby Whaler has strong connections throughout Yorkshire with other restaurants and takeaways in Pudsey, Guiseley, Wetherby and York. Always keen to support local sport, Wetherby Whaler sponsors a number of teams, both professional and amateur, in the areas around its restaurants.

The Wetherby Whaler group includes five high quality fish and chip restaurants, in Guiseley, Wetherby, Wakefield, York and Pudsey. Phillip and Janine Murphy began trading in fish and chips in 1969 in Tadcaster, 20 years before buying the original Wetherby Whaler in Wetherby.

The Wetherby Whaler brand has since expanded with an acquisition in Pudsey and purpose-built outlets in York and Wakefield.

Wetherby Whaler’s new mascot, Wally, was

joined by several members of the Wakefield

Trinity Wildcats’ team including their mascot,

Daddy Cool, when they stopped by the

Wakefield restaurant of the much loved fish

and chip chain for a spot of lunch.

Fly, Drive, Swim to Watsons Bay – well, maybe just drive or take a Bus, Ferry or Water Taxi. Whatever you choose, you should not miss a chance to experience Doyles Restaurant, one of Sydney’s most famous Water side restaurants with a world renowned restaurant.

Did you know that Watsons Bay was the place that the Royal British Navy first landed in Australia? Or did you know that Watsons Bay is boarded by Sydney Harbour on one side and the Tasman Sea on the other?

Mark Challinor on a recent trip to Australia said “The fish and chips we had at Doyles were really great. I live in London most of the time and we are spoilt by choice in the capital, but these were on par with some of the best back in the UK. Add to that the vista and ambience and Doyles is a place I can recommend to anyone making the trip down under. “

CookTek’s cordless ThermaCube heated food delivery bag, from MCS Technical Products, has been

specifically designed to do just that.It is a really simple and effective solution

for any chip shop operator thinking about inaugurating a heated delivery service for its customers – with payback on the investment being measured in months rather than years.

It can make sense to offer home delivery as it is a cost effective method of growing business and maximising the capacity of any site. But it is imperative to maintain the quality of the food from fryer to plate.

The thermaCube bag will keep contents hot and crispy for up to 25 minutes from the time the freshly cooked food has been put into its container and placed in the bag.

One busy fish and chip shop chain trialled thermaCube and was delighted with the results. The John Dory’s chain, which was Northern Ireland regional Fish Shop of the Year winner in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2014 has been using the bags for just over a year now and Stephen Polly of John Dory’s Fish & Chips, Belfast, says: “We were keen to set up home deliveries but were concerned about maintaining ‘just-cooked’ quality.

“To be honest, I expected a certain amount of deterioration but this just has not happened. The bags have made a big difference,” he says.

The bags are available in two sizes and heat up in minutes so there is no waiting around for them to come up to temperature.

“For the up to 25 minutes between when the freshly cooked food is packed into cardboard containers and it reaches the customer it is kept in perfect condition.

He also likes the fact that the black heated delivery bags are very professional looking, “which raises the game”, he says.

“Business is good as we have now put ourselves on Let’s Eat too which is also proving very good.”

“The use of these bags makes absolute sense for operators. I recently met a chip shop owner who had signed up for a delivery service which would not offer deliver to anywhere more than five minutes away.

“This system allows for full confidence that food will arrive in perfect condition after a 25 minute drive which opens up access to a larger customer base for operators.”

There’s a clear reason Norwegian cod and haddock tastes so good. And it’s not just our water.Norway’s pristine waters give our cod and haddock their distinctively chunky, succulent white fl esh.

But just as importantly, our vessels freeze their catch at sea to lock in the Arctic freshness. Wherever you

see the Norge logo in fi sh & chip shops, you can rest assured that the cod or haddock you order is the

real thing, of exceptional quality and sustainably caught from our abundant stocks. Enjoy!

Mel Pearson has been working at the restaurant on Sutherland Avenue since 1967 when his parents bought

the business. After over 45 years at the shop, he is ready to sell but isn’t ready to see the restaurant close.Pearson would like to see his business taken over by an individual, or better yet a family, who wants to keep operating the shop.

“[In] Kelowna everything I grew up with as a kid is all gone now and I’d just like to keep something that’s been around a long time,” says Pearson.

He says he sees a lot of familiar faces all around Kelowna thanks to his business.

“You might not know them by name but you know what they order,” Pearson quips.

The long-time restaurateur believes it is a secret batter recipe that keeps his loyal customers returning and he’s offering to include that recipe in the sale.

Not since the 1960’s has this opportunity been available. This site has been operating as the “Shady Rest British Fish & Chip Shop” since the 1940s. Land, Building and Business are included in the sale. The site is approximately 0.05 acres with a 743 square foot structure which was measured from the outside walls. This may potentially be a great take-out restaurant or coffee shop location. Call or text Kris McLaughlin @ 250.870.2165 and Ken McLaughlin @ 250.870.7845 with any inquiries.

The business and the 0.05 acres of land it sits on are both up for sale and are listed for $289,000. Which is approx. £140,000.

A Kelowna institution is up for sale, but the owner of Shady Rest British Fish & Chip Shop doesn’t want to sell it to just anyone.

Colmans of South Shields plan to convert the Sea Road bandstand, known locally as Gandhi’s Temple,

into a new restaurant which will also include a cocktail bar and takeaway.

Plans were submitted to South Tyneside Council last month and would mark the first new base since current owners Richard and Frances Ord took over the family business in 1990.

Mr Ord, whose Ocean Road business has won countless awards including Best Restaurant in the National Fish and Chip Awards, said: “The Temple is an iconic building situated on one of the best blue flag beaches in Europe. My great grandfather started up his business Frankie’s on the beach in 1905 just a stone’s throw away from the Temple and I love the idea of restoring a piece of our town’s history and heritage too.

“We are eager to create a restaurant which engages with those that live, work and visit South Shields. It is a fantastic site and somewhere we feel we can make a real impact.”

The new restaurant will be called

Colman’s Seafood Temple and it is expected to take six months to turn around the ambitious plans. It is expected to add another 35 jobs to an already 35-stong team.

Mr and Mrs Ord expanded their current base in 2011 after listening closely to customers.

“Our coast offers some of the best fish and seafood in the UK,” said Mr Ord, “most of which will be reflected on our menus.

“The Temple is about offering everyday quality and value for money, in a restaurant that makes you feel good. It will also feature a cocktail & oyster bar and a takeaway, which will, of course, serve our famous fish and chips.

“Our seafood will be sustainably caught with much certified by MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), and much will come from our local fisherman and we will, of course, use the fantastic local produce our region has become famous for.

“Our aim is to create an informal family seafood restaurant, value for money, great service and fantastic views to match!”

We can’t wait to be at the opening – Colman’s always attract some top names to try their great fish and chips so maybe myself and Sting will both be finding out that everything they do is magic ….

One of the country’s top Fish and Chip Restaurants has unveiled exciting plans to open a new eatery at an iconic North East landmark.

Always Out of the Ord-inary!
