CHIMES & TIMES Church of the Resurrection
The Episcopal Shared Ministry of Cumberland County Nov/Dec 2019
Pastor’s Corner
Dear Friends,
‘Tis the season of Gratitude and Giving. This can be a season of real challenge, to find faithful ways to care
for others and to dig deeper into our personal practice of our faith. This month, I share this quote from
spiritual guide, Henri Nouwen:
“Gratitude as the gospel speaks about it embraces all of life: the good and the bad, the joyful and the painful,
the holy and the not so holy, Is this possible in a society where gladness and sadness, joy and sorrow, peace
and conflict remain radically separated? Can we counter the many advertisements that tell us, “You cannot
be glad when you are sad, so be happy: buy this, do that, go here, go there, and you will have a moment of
happiness during which you can forget your sorrow? Is it truly possible to embrace with gratitude all of our
life and not just the good things that we like to remember?
“Jesus calls us to recognize that gladness and sadness are never separate, that joy and sorrow really belong
together, and that mourning and dancing are part of the same movement. That is why Jesus calls us to be
grateful for every moment that we have lived and to claim our unique journey as God’s way to mold our
hearts to greater conformity with God’s own. The cross is the main symbol of our faith, and it invites us to
find hope where we see pain and to reaffirm the resurrection where we see death. The call to be grateful is a
call to trust that every moment of our life can be claimed as the way of the cross that leads us to new life.”
(Henri Nouwen, “All is Grace,” Weavings 7:2, 1992)
I pray that you may find times of deep joy this season and find your hearts opened to the mystery of God in
our midst. In these days of public conflict, may we find common ground to remember that God is God of all
people and all times. There is no time, no person, no event that is beyond the care and mercy of our God.
That’s Good News – for which I am thankful.
Blessings,
Ellen +

Service & Outreach . . . VBS supports Iraqi Chicken Farmers Each year, the summer Vacation Bible School adopts a project as their outreach focus. This year, we
adopted the Chicken Farm Project of Stand with Iraqi Christians (<standwithiraqichristians.org>), and we
raised money for chicken farms at the rate of $5 per chick. SWIC sponsors redevelopment grants to
experienced chicken producers, who need help to reconstitute their farm operations, following the
devastations of war. Our contribution goes toward a redevelopment grant, that will include funding for 3,000
chicks, feed, antibiotics, and everything an experienced chicken producer needs for farm operations. We
were able to raise $865 for chicken farm redevelopment, and we’ve applied for a $750 matching grant from
the diocesan Global Goals program to make our contribution to SWIC a total of $1615. That’s a lot of
chicks! Thank you for your generous support.
Reading Camp moves into the School Year Are you interested in helping a young person improve reading skills? We are
exploring the possibility of extending the Reading-Buddy system through the
school year with volunteers at the local elementary schools. As you know,
good reading skills are fundamental to success in study and work. If you
would be interested in serving as a Reading Buddy to a young person, who is
seeking to improve reading skills, and you are available during weekday
hours, contact Rev Ellen.
Bike MS: City to Shore Ride: Biking to make a Difference With your support Lin and Eric were able to raise $1200 for MS research and support (<bikeMs.org>). This
fund-raising bike ride really makes a difference. Thank you!
Make your Christmas-giving special this year . . . Make your giving count
Alternative Gift Giving is a way to make a difference in the world and share Christmas wishes in a special
way. Many charities provide a gift-giving opportunity that allows you to give in honor or memory of
another, and the charity will notify the honoree of your gift. Consider these possibilities: Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) This has been a year of hurricanes, earthquakes, and fire. ERD is part of recovery efforts in all these places
and welcomes your gifts to assist in emergencies and to provide monies for on-going development projects
around the world. Consult the ERD website, http://www.episcopalrelief.org/, and the section “What You
Can Do.”
Salvation Army The local Salvation Army outreach supports holiday preparations for many people in our community.
If you would like to make a gift that will bring immediate aid to our neighbors, consider a gift to our local
Salvation Army at either 733 E. Chestnut Avenue, Vineland, NJ 08360-4464 (for Vineland and Millville) or
29 West Commerce St, Bridgeton, NJ 08302 (for Bridgeton).

Church of the Resurrection “Building for the Future” A special Building Fund has been established by the Vestry to save for expenses related to the construction
of our new church building. Gifts to the Building Fund can honor or remember someone(s) and provide for
the future.
Thanksgiving & Christmas Food Baskets This year, we will be putting
together eight (8) food baskets for Thanksgiving and for Christmas. For both
holidays, here are some items for your shopping list: Canned Vegetables, Mashed
Potatoes, Stuffing, Rice, Pasta, Mac & Cheese, Applesauce, Beans, Canned Fruit,
Cake Mixes, Jell-O, Pudding, Fruit Juice, Coffee, Tea. If you are able to contribute
a turkey or a ham, please contact Grace McClean or Rev. Ellen.
The youth group will be packing baskets this year and ask that you bring donations for Thanksgiving baskets to
the Church on Sun, Nov 10th
and on Sun, Nov 17th
. Please bring your food donations for Christmas baskets to
Church by Sun, Dec 15th
. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.
Christmas gift baskets. We are beginning our in-gathering of gifts for children and
food items for holiday baskets. Tags for children’s gifts will be hung on the Giving
Tree. Please bring your (unwrapped) gifts, with gift-tag attached, to Church by
Sun, Dec 15th
.
Light Household, our sponsored apartment with
recently homeless persons, is well appointed with the
items we provided on moving-in in April. If you
would like to make a Christmas gift to our Light
Household residents, consider ShopRite, Walmart,
or Ollie gift-cards for household expenses.
Cold Temperatures bring Code Blue, our community response to the needs of homeless community
members for food and overnight accommodation. St Andrew’s is part of the Bridgeton rotation, as it has been
previously, and is open, depending upon weather conditions. Contributions of snack foods, breakfast foods,
juice, coffee, paperware, and gift cards for miscellaneous purchases are welcome. Volunteers are needed to
staff the Bridgeton parish hall for the evening meal, overnight, and breakfast. Open Code Blue weeks at St
Andrew’s are 11/17-30, 12/22-28, 2/2-8, 3/8-14, 4/12-18. If you can help in this essential community ministry,
contact Rev Ellen for more information and/or to place your name on the volunteer schedule. For more
information about Code Blue, consult the website: <http://www.m25initiative.org/code-blue.html>
Holiday Hygiene Kits for our Food Pantry guests, is a project sponsored by our ECW members. The
ECW will be collecting travel-sized items for inclusion in this year’s holiday hygiene kits. A list of needed
items will be available soon.
