The summer season is coming to a close. Families are planning for another
school year and some have already started back. All the Stuff the Bus col-
lection items have been distributed. Thanks to everyone who contributed!
There is no doubt that those items helped kids return to school a little bit
more prepared.
Here at GOPCC we are also gearing up for a new school year. Our director,
Val Baker, the preschool board, and all the teachers are readying the class-
rooms, curriculum, and making sure everything needed to provide our
young students with a wonderful, positive, and safe environment is in
place.
Our pre-schoolers fill our building with energy, curiosity, giggles, and
sometimes when Nova and I leave our office doors open we can hear them
singing during music time. It always puts a smile on our faces.
These kids, and the families that entrust them to us, are a blessing to this
church and in turn we want to be a blessing to all of them.
We can't all be involved in the day to day activities of our preschool or of
schools across our country though we can find ways to be supportive:
thank a teacher, volunteer to read a story, become a tutor in your local
school system, or donate supplies throughout the year. These are just a
few examples. And, of course, something we can all do is pray that the
interactions of our students, teachers, and staff are grace-filled.
My personal prayer is that every student in every school in this country and
beyond along with teachers, staff, and volunteers have a productive, hap-
py, and safe year.

TRUSTEE AND SHELTER NEWS
Good news on the shelter. We are about to cross the finish line after jumping hurdles, dodging darts, obstacles with the city and various contractors. Here is the condensed version of some of our challenges.
We finally got the city to tell us what process they would accept to place the decora-tive bricks around each of our 18 posts in the shelter. They said that a piece of angle iron around each post would be acceptable. So, Randy Medlin made the 18 angle irons and Jack Gibson and Ron Lyttle put them on. The concrete contractors came back and didn’t like that idea. They wanted a small steel plate welded around each post for support of the bricks. We had the steel plates made and welded on sight. Next, when that contractor, who had given us a verbal quote returned, he changed that quote to a much higher amount that was not acceptable or doable for us. Connie then contacted a dependable company that she and the Trustees had used before on other projects.
Rider’s Lawn & Landscape have previously worked on church issues; landscaping, tree trimming and cutting, mulching play area, and projects at the Foster house to name a few. They are licensed and bonded and have experience in brick and paver work. And, coincidently owner Bob Hurt is Connie’s brother and owner Kim Medlin is Randy’s brother. Ok we have a contractor lined up so time to order bricks.
Ron and Connie went to Snyder Brick and Block Hardscape Division to select color and style to match our engraved bricks. They were sent out into the “brick yard” to match what we have and luckily we found a match and they had two pallets. We weren’t sure exactly how many we needed so we left feeling great that what we wanted was available. Next day, Connie had the exact number and headed back to the brick yard to make the long awaited purchase.
When she got there the manager said he had just loaded them up for another cus-tomer who had ordered them long ago but had not gotten around to having them delivered. We’ve had set backs before so we placed the order with a two week deliv-ery promised. That was until today when Connie called to check the status and the manager said, “ut oh, hold on” and we are still holding waiting for him to call back and let us know when the bricks will be delivered.
Then the phone call came, 2:19 on Friday afternoon, the voice said “your bricks are loaded and will be delivered sometime today. And so they were. All 515 bricks and bags of mortar ready to be laid around the shelter posts to complete that part of the project.
In the meantime, the Trustees have been hard at work taking care of other things that need attention. Some of these are:
Carpeting the sanctuary, fixing the TV in the Hilty Room, fixing a downspout to redirect waterflow, repairs to boys restroom, exit signs installed, light fixture repairs, drinking fountain repair, boiler pump repair, elevator repair and light replaced, replacing and/or cleaning all the air filters, supervising the repair of the cracked foundation in the Charter Room which required a backhoe, correcting issues from the Fire Department inspection, the lawn mower maintained and grass cut so we can keep the outside looking great. These are just a few of the jobs our
devoted Trustees work on to keep our church safe, beautiful & functioning for us.

All Church Picnic—Sept. 9th
Rally Day we will hold an all church picnic in the shelter house.
We will join in this fellowship meal following the morning worship ser-vices. Chicken will be provided. We are asking that side dishes, salads and desserts be brought to share. It was a delicious buffet last year, and promises to be again this year.
We will have tables and chairs out, but if you want to bring your lawn chair please do.
B_I_N_G_O fun will follow the meal, we are collecting prizes for the game. Please give Toni Bailey or the church office any prizes you want to donate.
Most of all we look forward to shar-ing in this fellowship meal and social time. - Worship Committee, coor-dinating the picnic
