READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY, 5/5/2019 1st Reading: Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41 Resp. Psalm: Psalm 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11-12, 13 2nd Reading: Revalations 5:11-14 Gospel: John 21:1-19 or 21:1-14 READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY, 5/12/2019 1st Reading: Acts 13:14, 43-52 Resp. Psalm: Psalm 100:1-2, 3, 5 2nd Reading: Revalations 7:9, 14b-17 Gospel: John 10:14 Scripture reflection for next week’s readings Blind trust in Jesus This Sunday's Gospel reading is short and to the point: Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is the only one we follow, the only one we can trust blindly. Others who have authority in our lives might be good shepherds, but none of them are to be followed blindly, not even the best of them. We respect the positions of bishops, parish pastors, employers, teachers, parents, etc., but all make mistakes, all sin, all have incomplete understandings of the situations for which they're responsible. We must use the Holy Spirit's gift of discernment in each case so that we don't behave like dumb sheep inadvertently cooperating with decisions that grieve our Father God. Only Jesus can be blindly trusted. Only Jesus is perfect and knows all, understands all, and never sins. Only Jesus can successfully make the right decisions all the time and lead us through the various situations of life without inadvertently cooperating with evil. Only Jesus can discern and implement a plan that's best for every person who's affected by the plan. Only Jesus can lead us closer and closer to heaven while guiding us through the pitfalls and dangers of the journey. And it is only Jesus who can smile at our blunders when we stray from his plans, because he knows that we still really do love him and want to do what's right. He knows how to implement a new plan that will steer us back into safe pastures. He compassionately holds onto us so that we don't wriggle away from the Father's hand forever. Whenever we distrust anyone -- ourselves, included -- we can safely trust that no matter what happens, Jesus is always there, steadfastly guiding us and re-guiding us after we stray. Because we really do love him and want to do what's right, he is securing our safety, redeeming our mistakes, making good come from bad when we repent of our sins, and of course always making sure that we'll get home to heaven. To be good sheep, all we have to do is cooperate with his guidance! Questions for Personal Reflection: How much do you trust yourself and your discernment of truth and your ability to stay on the path to heaven? Who else is difficult to trust right now? What will you do this week to entrust these matters to Jesus? Questions for Family & Community Faith Sharing: When is it difficult to trust Jesus? Why is it so difficult? Considering that past experiences with imperfect humans naturally causes us to distrust even Jesus, what helps you overcome this so that you can trust God more? © 2019 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com. Please remember Ascension in your will May God Bless you for your Generosity!

Every week, our parish musicians post the titles of the music we have used in the past week onto a site called OneLicense.net. This grants us a license (for a fee) to podcast and reprint copyrighted music.

This also pays the composers for their creative efforts. Posting this week after week, I can’t help but notice the frequency with which one composer’s name keeps popping up. The name? Marty Haugen.

Have you been to a funeral where “Shepherd Me, O God” was sung? Or, maybe I should ask, to one where it was not sung? That’s Marty Haugen’s setting of Psalm 23. “We Walk By Faith,” which we sang last week? Marty Haugen. “Gather Us In,” “We Are Many Parts,” “Tree of Life,” “All are Welcome,” “Eye Has Not Seen,” “My Soul in Stillness Waits,” and “Return to God?” All composed by Marty Haugen.

Who is this guy? Marty Haugen was born in 1950 in Eagan, MN to a musical family. He started playing guitar after he heard The Beatles. He grew up in the Lutheran Church and graduated from Luther College with a bachelor’s in psychology. Marty had been in a college band and played several instruments, and the chaplain at a hospital where he was working suggested that he apply his musical gifts to Catholic liturgy. His 1980 collection “With Open Hands” including “We are Many Parts,” “We Remember,” and other well-known pieces soon followed, and his career as a composer of liturgical music was launched. Who says that you can’t do anything with a bachelor’s in psychology? Later on Marty earned an MA in Pastoral Studies.

Fast forward to now. Marty has composed over 400 pieces of liturgical music. His name is on 19 of the 67 psalm settings in the main part of our Gather hymnal. Altogether, he is credited with 66 of the hymns and psalms in the hymnal. He composed the “Mass of Creation” (1984), which was the most widely used Mass setting for the next 25 years or so. Over the last 40 years, Marty has been one of the most prolific and best-known composers, presenters, and performing artists in liturgical music. So, here’s the man (pictured here) behind so much of our music.

2020 PICTORIAL DIRECTORY This summer Ascension will begin development of the 2020 Pictorial Directory. We hope that you will all participate so that we are easily identifiable to all members of Ascension. This is a big project and many hands would make the work a little easier. The last project was a lot of fun because of all the volunteers. Some developed the layout, some did publicity, some made phone calls, some welcomed families to be photographed and some contributed activity photos for inclusion. All help is welcome. Please contact Sue Graham at 937-299-1827 to volunteer or email her at [email protected].

Feed the hungry. . .

Pick up recipe and baking dish on May 5 & 12. Return your dish by May 24 to Witzman Center Freezer.

Any questions, contact Cathy at [email protected]

Christ is risen, creator of all; he has shown pity on all people.

CRS RICE BOWL If you haven’t returned your rice bowls yet, you can still do so this Sunday.

HELP JESUS IN DISGUISE This week, we take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection to help Jesus in disguise. This collection helps six Catholic agencies provide relief and support to struggling communities and work for peace and reconciliation among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around the world. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection. Learn more about the collection at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

NEW PARISHIONER REGISTRATION There will be new parishioner registration next weekend after all Masses in the Narthex at the Welcome Desk. Please stop by and officially register to be part of our welcoming parish.

ASCENSION MEN’S FELLOWSHIP All men are invited to participate in our discipleship

journey on Saturday, May 11 in Room 102 of the Notre Dame Center from 8AM to 9AM. We are viewing and discussing Bishop Robert Barron’s series entitled “Pivotal

Players.” In our next session we conclude the episode on G.K. Chesterton, a convert to and evangelist for Catholicism. A prolific writer from 1900 to his death in 1936 he shows us that the fundamental disposition of effective evangelism is joy, and a life in Christ is a day-to-day encounter with an abundant and surprising offer of grace. Come and learn of the great contributions by Chesterton on living our Christian faith. I hope to see you there. Contact Mike Wager at 435-5974.

“Catch the Building Spirit is at it again for our 27th year of building a home for a family in need. We excited to get started with “Blitz Week” starting Memorial Day weekend and working through Friday May 31, to have the house under roof. Then we take the summer to complete the home for Jeremy Evans and Tiffany Reynolds and their 4 children. Destiny Evans is their 4 year old daughter who has multiple surgeries for her rare form of Spina Bifida. She is lively and enthusiastic, but she will require the use of a wheelchair for her life. This house will serve the family well, especially this daughter who is excited to wheel up to the counter to help cook and to be able to brush her teeth in the bathroom. Once again we could use assistance through volunteers and donations. As in previous years we are funding 100% off the home for our Partner. We encourage you to join us for either Blitz week (May 25 – May 31) or throughout the summer for our build. Also for Blitz week we could use lunch meals and as always we welcome donations and prayers. Details are at www.catchthebuildingspirit.org or Call John at 694-9603 or Hank at 429-0360.”
