“Jerusalem Windows: The Tribe of Zebulon” by Marc Chagall Preparing for a New Year The Rev. Cal Calhoun s we prepare for another new year, I am extremely excited about the possibilities ahead for 2016. As we continue our spiritual conversations and, during Lent, begin to talk about our Core Values as a community, I am hopeful that an ever- better understanding of who we are and why we are here will energize us to begin to fulfill God’s vision for Good Sam as we embark on the next 50 years. I have been delighted by the spiritual conversations. Some of the groups have been rather small, but in some ways that has fostered honest, vulnerable conversation. We have been surprised, delighted, and informed in these conversations. One long time Good Samaritan said, “I don’t think I’ve ever said this before, but I have felt the presence of God in this conversation.” Wow! That alone makes it worth it. One of the important aspects of these conversations is for us to begin to practice having a spiritual conversation. As we pointed out in the first conversation, that part of our brain (limbic systems) in which most of our faith related functions take place, doesn’t have language (the language function is in the neo-cortex). So it can be a challenge to put words to why God is important to us, why we come to Good Sam, why our journey with God matters. These spiritual conversations help us practice putting these “feelings,” these “reasons” we seek a relationship with God into words. This work is important as we prepare to have the conversations about the community that is Good Sam. Why are we here? What are the values are central to our life together? Answering these kinds of questions first for ourselves and our own sense of relationship with God is practice for working on these questions as a community. The last round of our spiritual conversations (the last round before Lent) will be after the 11:00 am service on Sunday, January 24, OR Tuesday evening, January 26 at 6:00 pm. Please plan to join us one of those times. My prayer is that you are basking in the Light of the World as we traverse this short season of Christmas (the 12 days of Christmas) and are preparing for an Epiphany (an Ah-ha, a new understanding) of God in the days ahead. May this New Year be, for you, a year of Light, and joy, and love, and blessing. - Cal+ Parish Events Feast of Lights & Burning of the Greens Party Mark You Calendars! Preparing for a New Year The Rev. Cal Calhoun

s we prepare for another new year, I am extremely excited about the possibilities ahead for 2016. As we continue our spiritual

conversations and, during Lent, begin to talk about our Core Values as a community, I am hopeful that an ever-better understanding of who we are and why we are here will energize us to begin to fulfill God’s vision for Good Sam as we embark on the next 50 years.

- Cal+

Books for the Library Mark You Calendars! Sunday, January 3, 2016

ne of the long-standing traditions at Good Sam for Feast of Lights is to provide books for the library. This is in honor of the "Light that has

come into the world." Please bring new or slightly used books to the Feast of Lights service at 5:00 pm on Sunday, January 3. – J. Dunn

Book Group Tuesday, January 12 – 6:00 pm

he Good Samaritan Book Group will meet on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Newk’s Express Café at 6:00 PM. The book selection for the month is

Loving Frank by Nancy Horan. “I have been standing on the side of life, watching it float by. I want to swim in the river. I want to feel the current.” So writes Mamah Borthwick Cheney in her diary as she struggles to justify her clandestine love affair with Frank Lloyd Wright. In this ambitious debut novel, fact and fiction blend together brilliantly. While scholars have largely relegated Mamah to a footnote in the life of America’s greatest architect, author Nancy Horan gives full weight to their dramatic love story and illuminates Cheney’s profound influence on Wright. Drawing on years of research, Horan weaves little-known facts into a compelling narrative, vividly portraying the conflicts and struggles of a woman forced to choose between the roles of mother, wife, lover, and intellectual. Horan’s Mamah is a woman seeking to find her own place, her own creative calling in the world. Mamah’s is an unforgettable journey marked by choices that reshape her notions of love and responsibility, leading inexorably ultimately lead to this novel’s stunning conclusion.

Elegantly written and remarkably rich in detail, Loving Frank is a fitting tribute to a courageous woman, a

national icon, and their timeless love story. Celebrate the New Year by reading a good book and join us for a lively discussion. Upcoming Selections: February: The Alto Wore Tweed: A Liturgical Mystery by Mark Schweizer. March: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - Mary Embler

Parish News

Lunchbox Ministry to Change

fter many years in business, the Lunchbox Restaurants in Knoxville closed on Christmas Eve. Folks at Good Samaritan have been spoiled

for many years by the long time generosity (and the chicken enchiladas) of the Sproles’ family. About 10 years ago, the Lunchbox ministry was a brainstorm of a few Good Sam women who could visualize a need for people in our church community. Through the years it has become a ministry of much more than food, it has become a ministry of presence, checking in and visitation as well.

In order for this important ministry at Good Samaritan to continue we will be making some changes. We don’t really know what all of those are at the moment, but we are looking for ways to continue to help those members of our congregation who benefitted from our Lunchbox delivery.

We will continue our famous Cooking Blitz evenings which produce food for the freezer, but we were wondering if you could help us out. Since soups are good for everyone and for whatever ails you, we are asking that whenever you cook a pot of soup or chili during these cold winter months ahead, if you would set aside a container or two to bring to church the next time you come. Just put what kind it is and the date on the lid and place it in the refrigerator or freezer in the kitchen.

You can begin to do this at any time, but we will officially kick off this new project off on Super Bowl/Souper Bowl Sunday. This will warm the hearts, souls and bodies of those who are sick or those who are in need of a little help with meals during the winter months. If you would like to do more, or if you have any questions, please contact Ann Backus at [email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks! - Taylor+

Africa Trip 2016!

he good folks from Good Shepherd Episcopal Church here in Knoxville are planning another trip to Tanzania (May 26 - June 10, 2016)!! If you are

interested, there is an informational meeting at Good Shepherd on Wed., Jan 6 at 6:30PM. If you are wondering about whether you might be interested, speak to Fran Potter, Bill Power or me! It is the pilgrimage of a lifetime!! – Cal+

Daughters of the King

he Daughters of the King will be starting a new member training series in January. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact

Sharon White (691-2413) or Joyce Grubb (247-6785). The date will be set as soon as we know who is joining us and what dates work for the majority of women.

The DOK is an order of Service and Prayer. Daughters often want a way to deepen their spiritual lives. Christ has taught us that prayer to God and Service to Others will help us on this journey.

“As I begin to pray The Lord’s Prayer saying, “Our Father who art in Heaven”, I recognize that surely I am his Daughter as he is my Father. Being part of the order proclaims that relationship.” – Joyce Grubb

Thank you!

he Daughters of the King thank Good Samaritan parishioners for the overwhelming support in the "Stuff-a-Stocking" project. Fifty bags were well

stuffed with useful items for seniors and were delivered to a drop off point on Tuesday, December 8. These bags were delivered with the Christmas Mobile Meals. If you donated items or helped fill a bag thank you again. I am sure that there will be smiles on a lot of faces and that makes the season of giving more meaningful. - Sharon White for DOK

Women’s Retreat! - Save The Date!

he Good Samaritan Women’s retreat for 2016 will be April 1-2. This is a wonderful opportunity to unwind, take a deep breath, and have a little “girl

time.” The retreat will be at Grace Point Camp and Retreat Center in Kingston TN. The retreat will be open to the first 30 ladies to sign up. We will have more information including costs after the first of the year.

If you have any questions or would like more information please contact Carie Mackey by phone at 865-389-0159 or email at [email protected].

Greening of the Church Thank You!

want to thank each of you that came to Good Sam on Sunday afternoon, December 20, for the Greening of the Church. The church looked wonderful and I hope

each of you enjoyed the fellowship and the 'job' you ended up doing. It was all done in record time. I also hope that when you attended services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and saw the beauty you created, it filled you with joy! Thank you! – Tanya Hawk

More…Greening of the Church Thank You!

ur afternoon of “greening” and decorating of the church was a huge success. Thank you to all who helped and to Tanya Hawk and her team who

organized it all. As usual, the Nativity pageant was wonderful and our Sunday School Children performed their parts well. Thank you to Ann Backus and her helpers for all of their work and guidance for the children. Our dinner was delicious and the after dinner music fun. A special thank you to all who prepared the food. I know that there were a couple of casseroles that were not used but we certainly thank each of you who prepared them. Our motto is always to be prepared for as many people as possible. We certainly were prepared! Many thanks also to Freddie for helping to end the evening on a high note!

All in all, the day was great. Thank you to everyone who participated. Christmas Blessings to each of you. - Joyce Grubb, Senior Warden

Christmas Caroling

hanks to all our Carolers. We had a smaller group than usual, but we were no less enthusiastic. We were able to spread a little Christmas cheer to 5

Good Sam members, and as usual, we all left with a happier heart than when we started. – Ann Backus

Shoe Box Ministry Report New Record - 68!

very big thank you to all who donated shoe boxes and small items, and to all those who worked hard stuffing and wrapping shoe boxes.

There was a lot of energy that morning and I appreciate all the helpers who pitched in. Because of your generosity, we were able to fill a record number of boxes—68! Amazing to get that many finished in less than an hour!! The VMC was so pleased to receive the boxes and said they would have no trouble distributing them to needy children. We could have filled more, but we actually ran out of shoeboxes!! So please, start saving your shoeboxes now for this important outreach ministry. – Ann Backus

Shrove Tuesday Silent Auction Benefits The Youth Mission Trip &

t is not too soon to be thinking about what you might be able to donate or make for the Silent Auction, held on Shrove Tuesday during the Pancake Supper. The bigger

the variety and the more items we have the more money we can make. Be creative. Make a gift basket, get a donation

from a local business, or sell a talent or skill you have.

Gift cards are a great way to support our outreach missions. Ask for support from your beauticians, nail techs, restaurants; many are happy to donate. Handmade items are always popular and appreciated. Begin working on your items now so that they will be complete for the auction. Money will be used to offset the cost of our youth mission trip. – Ann Backus

Children &Youth News

Feast of Lights Sunday, January 3

will need at least 10 children and youth to participate in the Feast of Lights service by carrying in the banners of our saints who have passed away. If your

child will be able to do this, please let me know. Children will be asked to meet in the back of the church at the start of the service. The Feast of Lights service is held before the Burning of the Greens. Please remember a donation of a new or gently used book. – Ann Backus

Rotation Sunday School

otation Sunday School will return to its standard format on January 10. We will begin a 3-week study of the Prodigal Son. If you haven’t been able

to attend Sunday School because of sport commitments or just plain business, we invite you to begin again. Start the New Year off with a commitment to attending class. Sunday School is a fun place of learning and fellowship, led by experienced and loving teachers. – Ann Backus
