New Birth…New Year…

New Life

The Rev. Taylor Dinsmore

he magic of Christmas has come and gone and once again the stable is empty. The young family has journeyed back home; their lives, our lives,

forever changed.

For all who have welcomed a newborn into the world, try to remember what that feeling is. Babies help us to redefine our priorities. They help us to understand what it means to be vulnerable and to understand the nature of God who would come to us as an infant. Babies help us to understand unconditional love and be more giving, loving, and trusting. Babies touch our hearts in ways nothing else can, and open us up to understand the good of God.

When a baby comes into the world suddenly nothing is the same...nothing will ever be the same. Everything we say, everything we believe, everything we live for centers around that small bundle of wet, wailing humanity. Heaven has touched earth and our reality is forever altered.

May we realize that Christ's coming into the world should have that same effect.

It is a new year, a clean slate, a time to celebrate the possibilities that new birth brings. Whether it is for Mary and Joseph, or for you and me, new life makes it impossible not to rethink our priorities.

We are a people who have come to understand what it means to mark time, goal set, and hit the reset button.

We have grown used to being able to "power down,"

"un-plug," "hit re-start," and all that is broken will soon be fixed.

Technology has made our lives so much easier in so many ways, but we must remember that for us the "fix" takes more than just the push of a button or a touch on the screen. It takes real work, patience and self-reflection to make the new year any different from the last.

Often we look to the "new year" as a starting point to "begin again" doing the things we know we should be doing. But it is not easy, and it is not quick, and it is not about starting a diet or committing to exercise more...it is about trying to live a new life...from the inside out.

We need to step back, get quiet, and think about the "new life" that has come to us in the birth of Jesus.

As we begin this new year, let us welcome our newborn king and make him the center of our lives. Let the standards that He set and the demands that He made of us become light of our lives...that beacon of Hope that holds before us the belief that we can make a difference in this world and in the lives of those around us. Let us rethink our priorities, making God in Christ, the focus of all that we say and all that we do. And let us work hard to live lives worthy of the gift of God that has been bestowed upon us in the gift of God's son.

Blessings for a new year filled with the knowledge and love of God,

Taylor+

oin fellow Good Samaritans on Sunday, January 5 at 5:30 pm for the annual Feast of Lights Service. This is a service of worship and celebration expressed in

music and word.

After the service, stay for the Burning of the Greens party complete with a hot dog dinner and a bonfire to burn the greens. There will also be a small separate fire to roast marshmallows for s'mores. Bring your greens from home and throw them on the fire!

Feast of Lights Tradition:

Books for the Library

Mark You Calendars!

Sunday, January 5, 2014

ne of the long-standing traditions at Good Sam for Feast of Lights is to provide books for the library. This is in honor of the "Light that has come into

the world." Please bring new or slightly used books to the Feast of Lights service at 5:30 pm. – Ann Backus

Confirmation Class

Sunday, January 12, 2014 – 9:45 am

e will be starting an Adult Confirmation/Inquirers Class in the New Year. The intent of the class is to share information about our Lord Jesus Christ and

pursuing the Christian life in the context of the Episcopal Church. We will discuss Scripture, Church History, the structure of the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church in the USA, the Sacraments and Liturgy, and what makes Episcopalians different from other denominations. We expect to review the Prayer Book, including Baptismal Vows

continued

(which we reaffirm at Confirmation), and the Catechism. We will also have an instructed Eucharist and discuss some of the symbolism of our weekly liturgy. We also want to talk about personal prayer and various prayer techniques and disciplines. This is a tall order and a lot to cover.

On Sunday, January 12, we will meet and discuss our schedule for the class. We will meet every Sunday during the Sunday school hour until the Bishop’s visit on Sunday March 30. We may have additional classes, probably on Sunday afternoons or evenings to cover material that we would miss if we stuck to the Sunday morning timetable.

We will have Confirmation when the Bishop is here Sunday, March 30. Confirmation is the adult confirmation or acceptance of Baptismal Vows made earlier in life. The Episcopal Church recognizes the baptism of nearly every Christian denomination (those that baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Confirmation is the way of incorporating into the Episcopal Church those baptized in other Christian traditions. Those who have been baptized and confirmed in another denominations are usually “Received” by the bishop at the confirmation service. Many people who are already Episcopalians chose to “Reaffirm” their Baptismal Vows in a formal way at the Confirmation Service. This class is intended to prepare people for Confirmation, Reception, or Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows or simply to learn more or “brush up” on their previous training.

If you are interested in this class please let me or Taylor know, or email the church office at [email protected] so we can prepare for the appropriate number of people. Please know that all are welcome to attend the class even if you are not interested in being confirmed, received, or making a reaffirmation but are just interested in learning more about the Episcopal Church. - Fr Cal

6:30 pm @ Panera Bread

he January Book Club will meet on Tuesday, January 14, 2013 at Panera Bread on Peters Rd at 6:30 PM. The selection for the month is People of

the Book by Geraldine Brooks. Hanna Heath, an Australian rare book expert, has been offered the job of a lifetime: analysis and conservation of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, rescued from Serb shelling during the Bosnian war. Priceless and beautiful, the book is one of the earliest Jewish volumes ever to be illuminated with images. When Hanna discovers a series of tiny artifacts in its ancient binding-an insect wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair-she begins to unlock the book’s mysteries, ushering in its exquisite and atmospheric past, from its salvation back to its creation through centuries of exile and war. Inspired by a true story, it is a novel of sweeping historical grandeur and intimate emotional intensity-an acclaimed & ambitious work from a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Take some time out of your hectic holiday schedule and enjoy a good book, then join us for lively discussion and a good meal. Upcoming Selections: February: The Girls of Atomic City by Denise Kiernan

People Speak

FISH Update

appy New Year! FISH Day this month is January 27. On FISH Day, people in need from all over Knoxville call in to request food for their

household. A volunteer answers the phone and takes down the necessary information. The request is put with others, sorted by zip code and assigned to a delivery person or team. Some of the requests are assigned to the Church of the Good Shepherd, which handles deliveries to several Knoxville zip codes. Each delivery team or individual makes deliveries to four or five households. The food comes primarily from Second Harvest. I do the sorting of requests, assign deliveries, and tally up the number of individuals served by age. In November, we served 91 individuals.

Maybe you will make a New Year’s resolution to be more active in the community. We can always use more people to make deliveries or answer the phone for an hour. Give me a call or an email, or just come down on Jan. 27 to observe. Joan Wilson, 865-253-7404, [email protected].

Christmas Caroling

hank you to everyone who went Christmas Caroling with us. We had a smaller group than usual, but we were still able to spread cheer to

seven Good Samaritans and many others who live in the facilities we caroled to. Our participating children were younger this year, but they sure were sweet and enjoyed by all. – Ann

Shoe Box Ministry

big thank you to all who donated items for the Shoe Box Ministry! We had 31 people participate and were able to fill and wrap 41 boxes. Boxes

were delivered the week after Thanksgiving to the Volunteer Ministry Center to be distributed to children whose families come to the VMC for assistance. Ginny Weatherstone and her staff are always so appreciative when we show up with the boxes. I would ask that you keep your eyes out for small items on sale after the holidays--mittens, socks, hats, small toys that will fit in a shoebox, etc. Pick them up now for next year. I have a box at church to collect these items; feel free to bring them to me anytime you find a good deal. Thanks. – Ann

Rotation Sunday School

hank you to all the December Rotation Sunday School teachers; Michelle Bales, Kristen Sanders, Jason Long, Betsy Luther, Chris Brown, Jennifer

Doherty and Anna Calhoun. We had a fun and spirit filled time learning the secret meaning of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Our January Rotation is a 3-week study of prayer and kicks off January 12. Remember there is not Sunday School on December 29 or January 5.

Please remember to have your children bring in offering money for Operation Smile, a medical ministry that performs surgery on children with deformities on their faces. The amount they bring in is not important, be it a quarter or more. The aim is for them to learn the habit of good stewardship and sharing. – Ann Backus

Ice Skating

ll children and youth of Good Sam are invited to join together for skating fun at the Ice Chalet on Sunday, January 19 from 2:00-4:00. This is a fun

time to expose your children to the sport of ice skating. The Ice Chalet provides little walkers for beginners, and a big wall to hold onto as you skate around the rink. This is a long-standing Good Samaritan fellowship activity. Details on cost will follow. – Ann Backus

Faithful Families

ark your calendars now for our next Faithful Families Gathering, to be held on Friday, February 21 at 6:00.

Faithful Families is for families with children in 5th grade and under and is an opportunity to build friendships through fun at church. Details will be forthcoming but rumor has it, it will include winter activities.

Start the Year off Right

Sunday School resumes on January 12. If you and your children have not been attending Sunday School regularly, make the commitment this new year to start. There are so many benefits to attending Sunday School; children learn about and feel the love of God, they have many adult teachers to show they care for them and they develop great friendships with other Christian children. It is never too late to start attending Sunday School. – Ann Backus

Grow in Faith. Live in Hope. Share God's Love

he Mission of The Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan is to respond to God’s love that comes to us in the gift of his son Jesus Christ by sharing that love with our neighbors as we come together as a community of the Body of Christ for common prayer,
