Curriculum development is analyzed and the use of the environment is evaluated. The learning centers of a classroom and all of the components of those areas are explored as they are used to enhance children’s growth and development. COURSE DESCRIPTION: (3units)

This course is designed to examine the history and theories related to early childhood curriculum and the role of observation and assessment in planning quality curriculum. Assignment Requirements: All assignments must be typed on one side of the paper only. Assignments should be submitted with all pages stapled together. Please do not use folders.

Attendance and Participation: Your class attendance and participation are very important, and will dramatically influence your grade. I will take attendance by having you sign in for each class. If you come in late, please see me at the end of break or class. After the first absence 15 points will be deducted for each absence.

Late Work: Occasionally something occurs that prevents an assignment from being submitted on time. If this has been discussed in advance, there is no penalty, however if work is submitted late without a previous agreement with me, your grade for that assignment will be lowered. If an assignment is not submitted at all, it will be counted as a“0”.

Assignments:

There is always much interest, and occasionally some anxiety about the grading process, so it is important to understand the system at the beginning to alleviate any concerns!! In this class, you will have six pieces of work to submit -­­ each of which is worth from 20-50 points for a total of 500 possible points. Your final grade will be determined by adding up the points earned for each assignment. A 450 – 500

B 400 – 449

C 350 – 399

D 250 – 349

F Below 250

The six assignments are as follows:

1. Essays: You are required to write a two page, single space essay what is creativity. What is your own opinion, your perspective and experience on creativity? I want to know your feelings and ideas on this topic as it lays the foundation for your understanding of why children learn through hands on creative experiences.

2. Five Lesson Plans: You are required to prepare five weekly lesson plan for a specific curriculum area (Dramatic Play, Music, Gross Motor, Sensory Play, Block Activity). Please use the format on pages 67-69 of your textbook. This lesson plan will be attached to your Activity kit.

3. Midterm Exam All submitted exams must be the student’s individual work. – October 22, 2015

4. Activity Kits: On your own create and present an activity kit that could be used in an early childhood classroom. The kit must include the following:

A description of the activity using form on page 71 of your textbook

All materials necessary to conduct this activity (ex: books, blocks, paints, writing materials, music instruments, any props you may feel are needed to conduct your activity). Materials can include items collected from nature such as leaves, sticks, rocks, flowers, etc.)

You must use real materials, and must reflect developmentally appropriate practice. Inclusion of materials and activities must be appropriate to Prek, Kindergarten or 1st grade children and reflect an adequate understanding of child development and early childhood education.

5. Curriculum Study: This is the major project for the semester and your presentation in a group of it in class serves as your final exam. You should work on it throughout the semester. As a group you will identify a thematic or project topic, create a curriculum, identify ways to integrate literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, dramatic play, music, sensory and block play, and motor movement in each of the learning centers in your study. Write 3 developmentally appropriate activity plans using the form provided in page 71 of your textbook. Complete and submit to me before conducting the activity. Write your complete lesson plans for these activities chosen using form on pages 67-69 of your textbook. Conduct 2 of these activities that you have developed with a small group of children, evaluate the children’s accomplishment of learning activity and document the results of the learning that has taken place during your study by creating a display board, power point, book or other method on documentation which you will present in class as a group. The teacher where you conduct your 3 activities with children will evaluate the activity using a grading form (provided in this syllabus). You must turn in all the parts of this study at the end of the semester. There will be different parts of the study due throughout the semester.

To implement the Curriculum Study, you will

Part 1: Identify a thematic topic and create 3 Activity Plan Worksheets, identifying ways to integrate literacy, math, science, social studies, music, arts, dramatic play, sensory and block play, and motor movement for each of the learning centers in your study. (Use form on page 71 of your textbook).

Part 2: Using the form provided, write 3 developmentally appropriate activity plans on your theme or topic of study, conduct 2 of the activities that you have developed with a small group of children and evaluate the children’s accomplishments. You will submit the activity plans you conducted with children in the classroom. These activities should be plan for small groups of children, mostly in a learning center. The teacher in that classroom will complete an evaluation of how well your activity was implemented. Use forms provided in your text pages 67-69 for your lesson plans.

Part 3: Develop a plan to document the results of the learning that took place during your study for the children and yourself, and write a 5 page document detailing your observations of these activities. Tell me your experience, what you observed about the children and their learning, was it easy for your to complete, were the children interested and engaged, etc.

6. Group Presentation (Final Exam): Students will be provided with guidelines for planning, carrying out

and evaluating a workshop/presentation, and will work with others on an instructional team to present to the class a set of integrated learning experiences based on one of the curriculum areas. Presentations will be based on readings in the topic area, and should be creatively presented using hands-on activities, displays, and other forms of class involvement. Activities used in the workshop must be hands-on, real materials, and must reflect developmentally appropriate practice. Inclusion of materials and activities must be appropriate to Prek, Kindergarten or 1st grade children and reflect an adequate understanding of child development and early childhood education.
