Chiclayo(Spanishpronunciation:[tiklao])isthecapitalcityoftheLambayequeregioninnorthernPeru.Itislocated13kilometersinlandfromthePacificcoastand770kilometersfromthenation'scapital,Lima.Asof2011,ChiclayoisthefourthmostpopulouscityinPeruwithapopulationof629,990comprising6contiguousurbandistricts:Chiclayo,JosLeonardoOrtiz,LaVictoria,Pomalca,RequeandPimentelItisalsotheprincipalcityofthefourthmostpopulousmetropolitanareaofPeru.

FoundedbySpanishexplorersas"SantaMaradelosVallesdeChiclayo"inthe16thcentury,itwasdeclaredacityon15April1835bypresidentFelipeSantiagoSalaverry.HenamedChiclayo"theHeroicCity"torecognizethecourageofitscitizensinthefightforindependence,atitleitstillholds.OthernicknamesforChiclayoinclude"TheCapitalofFriendship"andthe"PearloftheNorth".

Currently,ChiclayoisoneofthemostimportanturbanareasofPeru.Itisnowthecountry'sfourthlargestcity,afterLima,Arequipa,andTrujillo.Thecityhasapopulationof738,000,[2]whilethemetropolitanareahasapopulationof972,713(2009WorldGazetteer.com).

Thecitywasfoundednearanimportantprehistoricarchaeologicalsite,theNorthernWariruins,whichconstitutetheremainsofacityfromthe7thto12thcenturyWariEmpire.

Mochicaculture

TheMochecivilizationbeganbetweenthe1stand7thcenturiesAD,occupyingaterritorythatspannedmuchofwhatisnowthenortherncoastofPeru,encompassingwhatisthecoastalareaofthedepartmentsofAncash,LambayequeandLaLibertadtoday.Thiscivilizationreachedabroadknowledgeofhydraulicengineering:Theyconstructedcanalswheretheymadethemostoftheriverwatertoirrigatetheirland.Thisallowedthemtohaveagriculturalsurplusesandastrongeconomyfordevelopment.Theculturewascharacterizedbyintensiveuseofcopperinthemanufactureofornamentalobjects,toolsandweapons.[3]

DuringtheMochetimes,PampaGrande,locatednotfarfromChiclayo,wasamajorregionalcapital.



TheMochicansareconsideredtheproducersofthebestceramicartifactsbecauseoftheelaboratedesignsofthepottery.Thesedesignsrepresentreligiousthemes,humans,animals,andscenesofceremoniesandmythsreflectingtheirperceptionoftheworld.Theywerefamousforhuacoportraitspreservedinmuseumsaroundthecountry,highlightingamazingexpressiveness,perfection,andrealism.

ThelatestfindingsestablishthatthiscivilizationdisappearedasaresultofthedisasterscausedbyElNio.[3]

Lambayequeculture

TheLambayequecultureorSicanexistedbetween700and1375andoccupiedtheterritoryofthecurrentdaydepartmentofLambayeque.TheareanearthecurrentdaycityofChiclayowaspartoftheLambayequecivilization.

ThisculturewasformedtowardstheendoftheMochecivilizationassimilatingmuchoftheirknowledgeandculturaltraditions.

TheLambayequeculture'scivilizationwasdividedintothreephasesorstages:

LambayequeorSicancivilizationoccupiedtheterritorynowbelongstothedepartmentofLambayeque,beganbetweentheagesviiixivAD.andculturalinfluencebysharingitextendedoveralmosttheentirePeruviancoastduringitspeakbetween900and1100BC).ThiscivilizationwasformedfromthedecayoftheMochecivilizationassimilatingmuchoftheknowledgeandculturaltraditionsofthese.TheLambayequeexcelledinarchitecture,jewelryandnavigation.AlthoughtheyfailedtotheextentoftheMoche,andpoliticalcomplexity,itisclearthatintheseartswerehisfavoritedisciples.ItisknownthatasaresultofthedisasterhappenedbytheElNiophenomenonhadtodowiththedisappearanceofthiscivilization.[5]

Colonialperiod

Intheearly16thcentury,ChiclayowasinhabitedbytwoethnicgroupstheCintoandCollique.ThechieftainsoftheseethnicgroupsdonatedpartoftheirlandfortheconstructionofaFranciscanconvent.Thiscesionoflandwasapprovedbytheroyaldecreeof17September1585.Thus,withtheadvocationofSaintMariaofChiclayoandunderthedirectionofFatherFrayAntoniooftheConcepcin,achurchandaFranciscancovenantwereerectedatChiclayo.AtthetimeofconstructionoftheseSpanishbuiltedifices,thecityofChiclayowasfounded.



ParadeoftheMuses

Chiclayo,unlikemostotherPeruviancolonialcitiessuchasLima,Piura,Trujillo,orArequipa,wasinhabitedbyalargelyindigenouspopulationratherthanSpanishcolonizers.On15April1835,duringtherepublicanera,theurbanizationofChiclayowaselevatedtothecategoryofcitybythethenpresidentFelipeSantiagoSalaverry.Thatsameday,Chiclayoreceivedthetitleof"HeroicCity".ThenextdaytheChiclayoProvinceiscreatedofwhichChiclayobecomesthecapital.

Republicanera

DuringthePeruvianWarofIndependenceChiclayowasnotindifferenttothepatriotrevolutionarycause,andsupporteditbysupplyingsoldiers,weapons,horses,andotherimportantresourcestoGeneralJosdeSanMartn'sliberatingarmy.Allofthiscametobeunderthesupervisionofthemostprogressivecreole,JosLeonardoOrtiz.

SoonafterindependenceChiclayowasstillasmallvillage.Nevertheless,duetoitsstrategicgeographiclocation,infuturedecadesitbecamearail,communications,andautomotivehub.In1827,Chiclayowaselevatedtothelevelofvilla.TheprogressofChiclayoisevidentintheearlyrepublicanerabythenamingofChiclayoasa"HeroicCity"inrecognitionoftheservicesrenderedbytheChiclayanpeopleinthePeruvianWarofIndependence.

Today,ChiclayoisamongthemostimportantcitiesofPeru,withmuchcommercialmovementandwithtouchesofgreatmoderncity,hometolargesupermarkets,bankingchains,warehouses,hospitals,clinics,galleries,amongotherbusinessesthathavebecometheFinancialandCommercialCapitalofNorthernPeru,titlesinadditiontotheCityofFriendshipandPearlofNorthernPeru,withametropolitanareathatincludesseveralneighboringsatellitecitiesabout30thousandhectaresaround.CurrentlyChiclayoisshapingupbetweenthecountry'smajorcities,isacommercialcityandbringstogethertheingredientsofamoderncity,[6]ChiclayoisknownastheCapitaloffriendshipand"PerladelNorte"ofPer.[7]

Politicaladministrativeorganization

Chiclayo,capitaloftheprovince,isgovernedbytheProvincialMunicipalityofChiclayowhichhasjurisdictionthroughouttheprovince.Thereisrestrictedtothecityauthority.Inthisregard,thedistrictmunicipalitiesofthemetropolitanareaalsohavejurisdictioninmattersrelatingtotheirowndistricts.

Thecity,astheregionalcapital,istheseatoftheRegionalGovernmentofLambayeque.ItisalsohometothedifferentregionalofficesofthecouncilofministersofPerucomprisingthePeruvianpublicadministration.[8]



MunicipalAdministration

ChiclayoMayoristheheadofgovernmentandthedistrictadministration,representinglegal,judicialandextratotheDistrict.Thechargeisdemocraticallyelectedforaperiodoffouryears.InadditioneachofthetownshaveaLocalMayor,underthesupervisionofthis,whoareresponsibleforcoordinatingthedistrictgovernmentadministrativeactioninthecity.

Chiclayohasawarmandverydrydesertclimatewiththesunshiningallyeararound.SincethecityofChiclayoislocatedinatropicalzoneneartheEquator,theweathershouldbehot,humid,andrainy,butitissubtropical,pleasanttemperature,dryandrainythisisduetothestrongwindscalled"cyclones"thatlowertemperaturetoamoderateclimateformostoftheyearexceptinthesummermonthswherethetemperaturerises,sosummerisoftenspentinresortslikePuertoEtenandPimentel.Periodically,every7,10,15,yearsarehightemperatures,withregularrainfallandextremeriseofriverwater

CapitnFAPJosA.QuionesGonzlezInternationalAirport(IATA:CIX,ICAO:SPHI)isanairportservingChiclayo,Peruandthesurroundingmetropolitanarea.ItisrunbyADPaprivateairportoperatorthatoperatesvariousairportsinnorthemPeru.ItisthemainairportoftheLambayequeRegion,oneofthemostpopulousofthecountry.ThecityisservedbytheCap.FAPJosA.QuionesGonzalesInternationalAirport,whichhousesprimarilydomesticairlines,charteredinternationalflights,andfuelsupplyservices.Theterminalhasarunwayof2520by45squaremeters.

TherearecurrentlyfourairlinesthatserveChiclayo'sinternationalairport,someofwhichwhoofferdailyserviceandothersinterdailyservice.Therearetwoschedulesforthisserviceonemorningscheduleandoneafternoonschedule.ThereareflightstothecityofTumbesandespeciallytothecityofIquitos.TheUSbasedSpiritAirlineshasexpressedinterestinservingChiclayofromitshubinFortLauderdale,Florida,UnitedStates.

Chiclayo,becauseofitslocation,servesasapointofinterconnectionforvariouscitiesoftheNortheastofthecountryandhasvariousbuscompanieswhichservicecitiessuchasLima,Trujillo,Piura,Cajamarca,Chota,Cutervo,Bagua,Jan,Chachapoyas,andTumbes.

Toadequatelyaccommodatethetransportationdemand,thecityisservedbytwodifferentlandterminals,onelocatedtowardsthesouthernendofthecityandanotheratthenorthernendonthePanamericanHighway.Asubstantialnumberofbuscompanieshavetheirownterminals,manyofthemlocatednearthedowntownofthecityandinnearbyareas.TheseinterprovincialbusescontributetothecongestionexperiencedindowntownChiclayo.Totrytosolvetheproblemthecitygovernmenthasproposedaplantobuildacentralstationinthecity.

Regionally,therearevariousdifferentpublicservicessuchascombis,cousters,colectivos,whichprovideserviceswithinthedistrictsandprovincesofthedepartmentofLambayeque.Therearealsoanoverwhelmingnumberofprivatetaxiswhichincessantlyhonktheirhornsthroughoutthedowntownareaofthecity,causingagreatdealofunwantednoisepollution.

ThedepartmentofLambayequeisoneofthemosttouristicinthenation.ItwashometotheancientcivilizationoftheMochewhocreatedsomeofthemostingeniousmonumentsandworksofartknowntoancientPeru.In1987,royaltombsofancientMocherulerswereexcavated.TheartifactsfoundinthetombweretransferredtotheRoyalTombofSipanMuseuminthecityofLambayeque.AlsotherearetheBrunningMuseumandtheSicnMuseuminFerreafe.ThesemuseumsdisplaythemagnificentancientartworkproducedbytheancientMoche.ThepyramidsofTcumearealsointhisarea.In2007,morethan306,000touristsvisitedthemuseumsofLambayeque.[10]Therearemorethan20adobepyramidsallofwhichare40meters(131feet)inheightandareinanabundanceofvegetationandwildlife.AlsointheareaistheChaparrEcologicalReservewhichhasabundantbiodiversity.ThedepartmentofLambayequeboastssomeofthebestcuisineinPeru.Themostpopulardishinthisareaisduckwithrice.ThecityofChiclayo,thecapitalofthedepartment,isthesecondlargestinthePeruviannorthandhasavibrantnightlife.

HomePark.LocatedintheheartofLeeds,formerlywasbuiltintwosections,hasapoolequippedwiththreewatervalveswhichgiverisetothreejetsofwaterthatformtheflagofPeru.Aroundherareshoppingcenters,theRENIEC,itsbeautifulCathedral,HotelRoyal,theOldCinemaTropicalandColonialTheatreandrepublicanbuildingsandmanyplaceswhereanytouristorcitizenmightenjoy.

CathedralofChiclayo.Locatedinthemainsquareofthecityisbuiltinneoclassicalstyleanddatesfrom1869bydesignanddrawingsofGustaveEiffel.Thecoveristwobodies,supportedbyDoriccolumnsfirstisinfrontofthreearchways.ThesecondpresentsCorinthiancapitalswhoseintercolumpiosappreciatebalconiesorbaywindows.Onbothsidesofthefacadestandsteeplestoppedwithcupolas.Inside,threebodies,highlightsthebeautifulsculptureofChristpoorandthehomeofAntonio.



MunicipalPalace.Itstoodonthenorthsideofthemainpark,locatedonCalleSanJose823.Elegantbuildingconstruction(1919),costmorethan30,000poundsofgold.ItwasRepublicanstylewithlargewindowsandwroughtirongates.ItwasdestroyedbyafirecausedbyadeplorablepoliticalbrawlbetweentheDeputyMayorJoseBarretoSanchezandhisopponentthenreinstatedMayorArturoCastilloChirinos,whotriedtorecoverthepositionrelyingonarulingoftheConstitutionalCourtjusttwomonthsofcompletingtheperiodforwhichhewaselectedinOctober2006.Currentlyalreadyrestoredandnowoperatesasamuseum.

LaVernicasChapel.UbicadaenlacalleTorresPaz294.FueconstruidainfinesdelsigloXIXyDeclaredmonumenthistriconacional.Elmayoryelaltarreredosadyacentepresentanarevestimientodepandeoroyplata.FueDeclaredMonumenthistriconacionalen1987.
