Founded in 1891, the University of Chicago Press is the largest American university press. The Journals Division has a rich history of presenting the work of top international scholars from a wide variety of disciplines. Of the 52 periodicals and serials currently published by the Press, 15 were founded more than a century ago and several were the first scholarly publications in their respective fields.

NEW FOR 2012

We are pleased to add two journals to our portfolio for 2012. The new titles are available indi-vidually and as part of the Complete Chicago Package.

American Political Thought will feature research by political scientists, historians, literary scholars, economists, and philosophers who study the texts, authors, and ideas at the foundation of the Ameri-can political tradition. Research will explore key political concepts such as democracy, constitutional-ism, equality, liberty, citizenship, political identity, and the role of the state. Published in association with the Notre Dame Department of Political Science and the non-profit Jack Miller Center, American Political Thought will be the only journal dedicated to the burgeoning field of American political thought. It will publish twice a year in print and electronic formats, with the first issue to publish in spring 2012.

Beginning in spring 2012, the University of Chicago Press, on behalf of The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), will publish Art Documentation, a peer-reviewed journal focused on art and architecture librarianship, visual resources curatorship, digital image management, visual arts technology, and related areas. With its move to the Press, Art Documentation will continue to publish twice yearly in both print and electronic format. The print edition will feature a new layout and an exciting new cover design reflective of the journal’s visually oriented audience. The first issue under the partnership will publish spring 2012 (volume 31 number 1).

About the EditorsCharles Esche is Director of van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven and co-editor of Afterall Journal and Books based at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London. He is also an advisor at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, and has curated major exhibitions including the 2nd Ramallah Biennial, 2007, and the 9th Istanbul Biennial 2005 with Vasif Kortun, Esra Sarigedik Öktem and November Paynter. Mark Lewis is a photographer, a filmmaker, and a Research Professor at Central Saint Mar-tins College of Art and Design. In addition to numerous solo exhibitions, his work is part of many museum permanent collections. Most recently, Lewis represented Canada at the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.

Rent Dissipation in the Nevada Territory

Mark Twain traveled to Nevada in 1861 when his brother, Orion, was appointed secretaryof the Nevada Territory where he observed:

The Legislature sat 60 days, and passed private toll-road franchises all the time. Whenthey adjourned it was estimated that every citizen owned about three franchises, andit was believed that unless Congress gave the Territory another degree of longitudethere would not be room enough to accommodate the toll-roads. The ends of themwere hanging over the boundary line everywhere like fringe. The fact is, the fright-ening business had grown to such important proportions that there was nearly asmuch excitement over suddenly acquired toll-road fortunes as over the wonderfulsilver mines.

Wyatt Professor of Law at the University of Chicago. His current teaching interests are constitutional law, federal jurisdiction, and elements of the law.
