exploring the 2D and 3D qualities of flatness and con-temporary Japanese pop-culture, we intend to develop system of color, texture and plastic that will produce multiple affect and various degree of sensation.relating to the urban obsession for the surface, the en-velope becomes the prime target for an architectural escape that offers immediate satisfaction. although our building may appear as a solid from the exterior, the in-terior reveals a new kind of special condition developed from the initial two-dimensional digital drawing applied to the surface. articulated as floating exhibition cham-bers, the elongated rooms open up to outside reveal-ing views over the city. From the exterior, they appear as glowing stars on faade. We seek qualities of the ephemeral and temporal a sense of continuity, but also a clear special transition, which reinforce the similarities as well as unexpected difference. We are interested in this relationship, the jux-taposition of different qualities of space. and the effect it may produce. reaching the opening, color becomes darker, texture deeper, while the epicenter is white, re-vealing a blush inside which eventually fades into new color. using color we maximize contrast between sur-face and chamber, flat and volumetric, massing and interstitial.

  • The saddle figure must be generated from an existing network of lines. It is a problem of partitioning some fun-damental volumetric region or set of regions with saddle faces to form a space filling figure or a set of space filling figures. We shall refer to this fundamental spatial region or set of regions as the interstitial domain of the network. The interstitial domain is formed by spanning with a minimal surface the group of polygonal circuits that a nonintersect-ing set will combine to from closed polyhedra___ Peter Pearce, describing Saddle Surface Geometry

New Public Library for the City of West Hollywood. Cur-rently in an advanced state of construction, the project presents the possibility of developing alternative strat-egies for maybe a master plan the redevelopment of West Hollywood Park, one of the few and vibrant open spaces within this intensely urban community at the heart of metropolitan Los Angeles. The current project includes a childrens library, teen center, career devel-opment center, special collections, community meeting room, multipurpose public meeting room for council and commission meetings and other uses, cafe, bookstore and TV station.

This is thesis is using familiarity as a driver to bring unfamiliarity into architecture. Familiar and unfamiliar plays a pivotal role in our percep-tion of architecture. In sculpture the incorpora-tion of some familiar aspect may be used to pro-duce legibility. The transformation of the original figure produces a strong impression making the viewer aware of the context that produces leg-ibility and familiarity. This approach has often been used in art. This thesis explores the use of this technique on an architecture scale.
