Chairman’s CornerFirst, I have some exciting news—our 22nd annual golf outing was the most successful ever. A record 80 golfers turned out for the event at the Highland Park Country Club on June 27, netting $31,000 for our scholarship program. Thanks to the members of the Golf Committee, and particularly to co-chairs Bill Bridges, Jeff Doman, Joe Keitel, John Powell, Bob Reece and Bart Rocca.

Next, I would like to thank Tiffany Chap-man for her years of service as she leaves the Cherry board. At the same time I want to welcome two new members to the board: Matthew Hunter and Jake Rohde.

As always, I want to extend my heart-felt thanks to everyone on our outstand-ing board, and to the ever-growing com-munity of friends who support our efforts.

I invite you to join us for our next Award Dinner on April 24, 2016. And don’t forget the annual golf tournament scheduled for June 25, 2016.

I should point out that even during these challenging economic times, the Cherry Scholarship Fund has found a way to expand our outreach to part-time and graduate students. We need your help so we can continue our work of investing in the education of our youth. I sincerely hope you will consider making a contri-bution to the fund.

Finally, I think it’s important to note that several Cherry Scholarship recipi-ents are now teaching our future leaders. Without that scholarship, their dream might never have become a reality. Thank you in advance for your kind support.

Patty Cherry Reece

For 22 years, the Cherry Scholarship Fund has been helping young people from Evanston achieve their dreams of a college education. This year we would like to feature two scholars, one cur-rently attending college and the other from much earlier in our program.

Anamaria Rosales received Cherry scholarships in both 2014 and 2015. She is now in her sophomore year at the University of Illinois at Ur-bana-Champaign, where she is majoring in early childhood education with a concentra-tion in Spanish. She expects to graduate in 2018.

She is pursuing a program that leads to a professional educator license in early child-hood education with special education approval. She will not be certified to teach spe-cial education, but will have the knowledge and training to be able to detect learning dis-abilities in young students.

She plans to start her teach-ing career after graduating from U of I. She also wants to attend graduate school, and is looking into programs at Na-tional Louis University.

“I have benefited from my relationship with the Cherry Scholarship Fund not only because their financial assistance allows me to attend college and focus on my aca-demics rather than working to make ends meet, but also because everyone at Cherry is welcoming and support-ive,” Anamaria said. “I look forward to [Cherry interviews] because I know that I will be welcomed with smiles and people who genuinely care about how everything is going and who are willing to help in any way possible to ensure that I am successful.”

She added, “Everyone who is a part of the Cherry Scholarship Fund gives me hope that there are good people in the community who work hard to pro-vide opportunities to minority, low-in-come students such as myself, in order to make Evanston a better place. They inspire me and my fellow scholars to be just as enthusiastic about helping others as they are.”

Jerry Succes received his Cherry scholarship in 2000. Today he is the assistant principal at Willard School in Evanston. He began his career as a reading teacher and was assistant principal at Oakton School for four years before moving to Willard.

“I’ve spent my entire ca-reer in education, and all of it has been in District 65. I’m fortunate to be working in such a great school district that I attended myself as a child,” he said.

Jerry has maintained his relationship with the Cherry Scholarship Fund, co-chair-ing the Outreach Committee and serving on the Cherry board from 2004 to 2014. “It’s a great feeling to be in-volved in an organization

that has done so much and means a lot to so many people in the Evanston community,” he added. “I feel good to be part of it and assist whenever or wherever I can.”

Asked what he would tell a high school student about the Cherry Scholarship Fund, Jerry said, “It’s a great organization and they assist you after winning. It’s full of educators and leaders who will follow you and make sure you are successful. Once a Cherry winner, you are part of a great family.”
