Bentley Wood, also known as the Chermayeff house, is the former home of Russian-born British architect Serge Chermayeff. It was built in 1938, in a secluded area in Sussex, England. Surrounded by the green countryside, it sits away from any disturbance and embraces the peaceful essence of nature. The house, which is designed to reflect its surroundings, offers a connection to the outside through large window openings, and effectively combines the interior spaces with exterior. Chermayeff’s spatial arrangement allowed for the separation of public and private areas within the house, there were organised according to the uses of each space and the level of noise that they produced. The house reflects features of both modernist and art deco styles. It also expresses cubic forms and a flat roof similar to that of the Bauhaus.
