• The city’s trees are giving way to metro rail as about 385 trees will be felled for the on-going construction.

• The city holds the dubious distinction of being one of the least green metros in the country. With a green cover spread over just 9.5 per cent of its geographic area, Chennai's dream of achieving the goal of 33 per cent urban forest cover by 2012, as envisaged in the National Forest Policy (1988), might remain simply a pipe dream.

• The green cover in the city has increased by over 25 per cent in last ten years. A study conducted by the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology using satellite imagery has shown an increase in the vegetation cover from 33 sq km in the year 2000 to 44 sq km in 2010. But experts say there is scope for much more. Effective planning and planned development against the present haphazard development can increase the cover in near future.

Chennai corporation decides to increase city’s green cover

• At present, the city has a green cover of only 5.5% and this initiative is expected to increase it to 11% this year and is likely to go up to 25% in three years.

What are the steps to increase city green cover?• Mayor Saidai Duraisamy said that 20 lakh palmyra

trees would be planted alongside waterways in the city. He also added saying, work on planting of 6.5 lakh tress will start shortly. This work is expected to be complete by March 2014.
