Kovalam Estuary is located 40 kms from Chennai City. It receives its fresh

water from the Buckingham canal.

CHENNAI WET LANDS

Pallikaranai, Kovalam, Kelambakkam, Pulicat Lake and Annamalaicheri are

some of the wet lands of Chennai city.

CHENNAI WET LANDS

Chennai used to have about 150 small and big water bodies in and around it,

but today, the number has been reduced to 27.

CHENNAI WET LANDS

Kovalam Estuary always has water retention and thus has its own aquatic eco-

system.

CHENNAI WET LANDS

The marshes acts as forage and breeding ground for the birds.

CHENNAI WET LANDS

Rains make the wetlands beautiful. The South East monsoon (July-Sept) and

North West Monsoon (Nov-Dec) brings the migratory birds and thrills the

Nature-lovers, with their activities.

CHENNAI WET LANDS

Wetland plants (Hydrophytes) are very well adapted to changing water

conditions, high salt and low oxygen environment.

CHENNAI WET LANDS

Kovalam These wetlands serves as an ideal habitat for about 63 species of

birds whose number rises with the monsoon seasons.

CHENNAI WET LANDS

You could spend hours at a wetland watching birds. Wetlands support bird life

ranging from painted storks, purple moorhens to herons.

CHENNAI WET LANDS

Sustainable monitoring of the

lake increased the fish

population and migratory birds

started returning in large

numbers.

KOVALAM WET LAND ……It is located on both sides of the link road connecting Old Mahabalipuram Road in

Kelambakkam and East Coast Road in Kovalam.

There are colonies of birds,

mostly pelicans, storks and

egrets and even ducks, teals

and avocets.

It comprises vast sheets of water, as far as the eye can see.

Chennai city’s south, especially, is dotted with popular forest patches like the

Vandalur zoo and the Pallikaranai marshland as well as the lesser known

Nanmangalam Reserve Forest and wetlands in Perumbakkam and Kovalam.

Wetlands are areas inundated or

saturated by groundwater at a

frequency and duration sufficient

to support the prevalence of

vegetation typically adapted to

the saturated soil condition.

Wetlands are home to diverse and fragile living organisms. They help to check

floods, prevent coastal erosion and mitigate the effect of cyclones and tidal waves.

KOVALAM WET LANDS Wetlands are a habitat for several flora and fauna, and act as a natural

drain and a major groundwater recharging unit for the city.
