Synthetic Malaquite
(Basic Copper Carbonate)

Preparation

1-CuSo45 H2O

2-NaHCO3

First step

Measure out 5 mL of a 0.5 M solution of copper sulfate (CuSO45 H2O) into a small beaker.

Second step

Add about 5mL of solid sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), a little at a time with stirring until all the fizzing has stopped and the reaction is complete.

Third Step

Filter the precipitate of basic coopeer carbonate-CuCo3Cu(OH)2- that has formed.

Fourth Step

Allow the pigment to dry uncovered on the filter paper on your bench until next week.

The final result is this.
