Homework

In line with the C.E.P.S homework policy students are expected to complete no more than 90mins homework per week.

In Grade 6, our aim is to prepare students

for independent study techniques in

preparation for their further education.

Spelling, Reading and Maths activities will

be the regular focus.

At times, some tasks may require internet

access. If this is a problem for you please

let us know and we can make

arrangements for your child to have extra

opportunities at school to complete the

task or an alternate may be given.

English

Reading Using the Reader’s Workshop model, our students will be engaged in shared and independent reading routines. We will be focussing on the comprehension skills of summarising, making connections, inference, and note taking. Our first term Read Aloud is Wanting Mor by Rukhsana Khan. Speaking & Listening Students will be supported to develop their presentation skills with a focus on language choice (appropriate to audience & context) and voice. We will be teaching students to paraphrase from information heard and read. Additionally, questioning will be encouraged as we develop our Inquiry skills. Writing Using the Writer’s Workshop model, our students will be supported (throughout the year) to consolidate and grow their knowledge of genres. Our focus genre for Term 1 is Personal Narrative, as well as a personal choice piece. We will edit our writing looking specifically at word choice and sentence structures, ensuring the purpose of the writing is clear.

Maths

Maths is taught using a range of games, problem solving tasks, mental maths challenges and skills practice. There is a strong emphasis on developing our skills with ‘real world’ application to the fore.

At the beginning and end of each term, students will be assessed to establish their prior knowledge on the topics to be taught that term, so that teachers can work from their individual points of need. Students across the two grades will be grouped accordingly to best meet their learning needs for each unit. This structure allows the teachers to more readily extend or support the students at their level of understanding.

Our topics for Term 1 include: Place Value, Number Patterns, Operations, Measurement.

Mathletics tasks will continue to support student learning by reinforcing concepts taught at school.

Humanities and Science

‘How Are Decisions Made In Australia?’ is our term 1 unit

title for Inquiry in grade 6. We will be looking at Federation

and how laws are passed through government. We will be

researching the major laws that have been passed through

Australian history.

Our Science unit ‘Change Detectives’ is all about

material structures, properties and reversible

and irreversible changes. We

are excited to develop our

hands-on experimental skills as

well as our knowledge.

Circle Time & Wellbeing

In Grade 6 we maintain an emphasis on the promotion of our school values through weekly circle time discussions and activities. During this phase of tremendous growth and change student wellbeing is at the fore. We regularly take time to celebrate our successes

and share our thoughts to keep our classroom a happy , caring and open learning environment.
