CHEAR is a local resource that helps parents and guardians navigate the education system to effectively advocate for their child to receive the needed services that will prepare their child for a more productive life.

Learning disability is a general term that describes specific kinds of learning problems. A learning disability can cause a person to have trouble learning and using certain skills. The skills most often affected are: reading, writing, listening, speaking, reasoning, and doing math. “Learning disabilities” is not the only term used to describe these difficulties. Others include: ■dyslexia—which refers to difficulties in reading ■dysgraphia—which refers to difficulties in writing; and ■dyscalcula—which refers to difficulties in math.ADHD/ADD & Asperger’s

Mental Retardation Is No More—New Name Is Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Genetic conditions. Sometimes an intellectual disability is caused by abnormal genes inherited from parents, errors when genes combine, or other reasons. Examples of genetic conditions are Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, and phenylketonuria (PKU).

We believe all 10 of our students show sign of

dyslexia.

Dyslexia is the most common reason a bright child will struggle with spelling, writing, or reading. But it affects many other areas as well.

* Learning to tell time on a clock with hands

* Telling left from right. Confusing letter pairs such as b-d, b-p,p-q, or g-j

Children with dyslexia also have difficulty:

* Memorizing their address, the alphabet, or their multiplication tables

* Learning to tie their shoes

* Writing some letters or numbers backwards past the end of first grade

* Saying sounds in the right order in multi-syllable words such as animal, spaghetti, hamburger, consonant

* Handwriting:

their letters don’t sit on the line,there may be odd spacing between their words, tall letters are sometimes written as short ones, tails don’t always hang below the line, sentences often don’t start with capital letters, and punctuation is often left out.

An ORTON-GILLINGHAM multi-sensory approach has been proven to work. Orton-Gillingham requires a very small group of one-on-one intensive tutoring. Early intervention is the key but it’s never too late to get an ORTON GILLINGHAN intervention.

Intervention gives DYSLEXICS the opportunity to reach their full potential as independent citizens and future tax payers.

If our children get the help they need we can reduce self –esteem issues which could lead to suicide rates, teen pregnancy, drug addition, school dropout rates, reduce government aid, unemployment rates, under employment, inmate population (80% of the inmate population is illiterate).

DYSLEXIA Our tax dollars have been funding research for over 30 years

20% of population struggles with reading, writing, spelling, and can affect memorizing math facts.

Shasta County School refuses to recognize DYSELXIA - too broad, our curriculum is working, there is only a window of opportunity to learn, they may never learn to read write or spell well.

Pete Wright is an attorney who represents children with special educational needs.

In second grade, Pete was diagnosed with learning disabilities including dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD. He was fortunate - his learning problems were identified early. His parents obtained intensive Orton-Gillingham remediation for him by Diana Hanbury King.

Pete's determination to help children grew out of his own educational experiences.

This video is the first nine minutes of a day long program about special education law and advocacy. The speaker is Pete Wright, an attorney who is the co-founder of the Wrightslaw site.
