Term 1

Week 9

25/3/2020

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As a school, we are closely following Department of Education and NSW Health recommendations and current advice to

protect against the transmission of COVID-19 throughout the community. On Monday, 23 March, Mark Scott, NSW

Department of Education Secretary, in alignment with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and NSW Minister for Education,

Sarah Mitchell announced that schools will remain open for the children of essential service workers. Classes will not

operate as per normal. If you are in a position to care for your children at home then you are not to send your children to

school. At Panania Public School we will continue to communicate essential information through the SkoolBag application.

Currently, we are working towards establishing a digital online learning platform. All K-6 classes will be using Google Classroom, except for 3N who has opted to use Seesaw, to deliver daily content and communicate with students. Google Classroom will be trialled over the coming week and will be fully operational by Monday, 30 March.

If your child/children do not have access to a computer in order to undertake online learning please contact the class teacher by email to organise alternative arrangements.

In addition, text books will be sent home and students will be advised by their teachers on how they will be used. This information will be sent through the SkoolBag app. Further information about learning from home is available on the Department of Education website. https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/learning-from-home

Continuing learning is only one piece of the puzzle, our children’s mental wellbeing is of paramount importance in these

changing times. Children can sense anxiety and tension, hence in the coming weeks you may see increases in behavioural

issues including tantrums and oppositional behaviour. This is to be expected considering the circumstances. Please comfort

your children, reassure them and spend time with them. Share a book, bake a cake, play board games, watch a movie,

draw pictures, make a family movie or play a game in the backyard. Remember stay positive, stay informed, stay active

and stay connected.

ANYONE FOR MRS WASKIW’S FAMOUS POTATO SALAD?

Stage 1 students recently harvested the potatoes from the garden to make a scrumptious potato salad. The smiles

suggest the recipe is a winner!

THE BENEFITS OF READING QUALITY TEXTS TO YOUNG READERS MULTIPLE TIMES

It is no secret that shared reading with children has social, emotional and cognitive benefits in

terms of developing language and building vocabulary. Research also suggests that multiple

readings of quality texts enables students to engage in critical and creative thinking. So, for

successful home reading.

1. Select a quality text that has the potential to be thought provoking.

2. First reading of the text, simply read.

3. Second reading of the text, tease out and explain some new vocabulary. On a few select

pages model your thinking out aloud. “I wonder ….” “What if ….” “I am thinking ….”

4. Third reading of the text, read the text and ask 1-2 open ended questions. “What would

happen” “What if.…” “Why do you think.…” “What might.…” “How did…“

5. Enjoy time connecting with your children. * Note readings take place over several days.

THE SCIENCE OF HAPPINESS

The human brain is designed to wander, in fact it wanders approximately 47% of the time enabling us to plan, reason, problem solve and learn (Killingsworth and Gilbert Harvard University 2010). This is really useful, however, this may come at an emotional cost. Thinking about the past, contemplating the future and thinking about what might happen and will happen can be overwhelming and create anxiety, sadness and even depression. Hence in this complex and fast paced world with threats of COVID-19 looming, model and practice mindfulness with your children. No, you do not have to attend a retreat or meditate. It simply means bringing your awareness back from the past or the future and into the present. Keep grounded and allow yourself to become absorbed in the moment. You will be at your happiest when you are in a state of concentration pursuing a passion that you enjoy. Allow your children to engage in down time where they can focus on their interests and experience a state of “flow“ or happiness. http://www.danielgilbert.com/KILLINGSWORTH%20&%20GILBERT%20(2010).pdf

YEAR 5 WRITING

Year 5D have been busily writing persuasive texts. They are seeking

the Principal’s approval for each of their class members to contribute

a $2 donation towards adopting a koala from the Koala Hospital in

Port Macquarie. Their texts featured strong arguments packed with

facts and figures, rhetorical questions and emotive language that

pulled on heart strings. Pictured is Balmoral Mini which is one of the

eighteen koalas that is up for adoption.

The students of 5D have certainly convinced me that it is an admirable

initiative and a worthwhile cause. The Koala Hospital is a licenced

Wildlife Rehabilitation Facility that treats and cares for koalas that

have been injured and or impacted by the recent bushfires.
