MINI CHEER SIGN-UPS: are due to the school office on or by Wednesday, January 28

(TODAY!). The forms were attached to last week’s Chatter, and are available in the school

office. Their performance will be at the pep rally on Thursday, February 12. Note that the

time has moved to 10:00 a.m. for the pep rally. Whether you have a mini-cheerleader, or not,

please join us at the pep rally to cheer on our students as they head out for the Topeka

Tournament! ACADEMIC MEET: Teachers will be choosing Academic Teams to represent us in Broken Arrow on February

6. Teams are chosen based on student grades, behavior, willingness to be bold in answering questions in a quiz-like format, and other criteria. Please be watching for more information.

REGIONAL SPELLING BEE: We held the regional spelling bee here at FLS on Tuesday evening. Thank you, Mrs. Hamre, for being our “pronouncer”, and Mr. Covert and Mrs. Powell for serving as judges. Jamie Doornbos and Jaden Sparks represented First Lutheran well.

ACADEMIC MEET: If your student has been chosen for the Academic Meet in Broken Arrow, he should have brought you a permission slip. I need those back by this Friday. I also need more drivers to help transport the students. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks. Mrs. Goll

MATHCOUNTS: Alex Lin will be representing First Lutheran in the regional MathCounts competition in Tulsa on Saturday, February 7. We hope to grow our MathCounts program next year. Students, many of you are gifted in math; please consider being part of our MathCounts team.

TALENT SHOW: Be bold all you talented FLS students! Our annual Talent Show will be held on February 20. Parents & Teachers, we’d love to see your talent as well. Talk to your child’s teacher about an application for the talent show. Applications are due by February 12.

TAX STATEMENTS: If you would like a printout of your payments to First Lutheran during 2014 for tax purposes, please stop by the office/send me a FastDirect-mail/or call the school at 762-9950. You can also print them off yourself by logging into your FastDirect account, scroll down to the bar that says “2007 Tax Year Printout”, change the year to 2014, and click the box that has “Tax Year Printout” in it. (The statement also has our Tax ID # on it that you will need if you are able to write off any of your payments.) Remember that not all payments to FLS are tax deductible, and you should contact a tax advisor to find out what can be written off, and what cannot.

FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH SALAD LUNCHEON: is scheduled for Friday, February 13, 2014 in the First Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $2.00 for pre-school or below, and are available in the church or school office. Proceeds will be used to sponsor church projects.

SNOW DAY NOTIFICATION PROCEDURE: In the event that school may be cancelled due to inclement weather, we will again follow Ponca City Public Schools schedule. Listen to your radio during the cancellation announcements, and if Ponca City Schools are cancelled, First Lutheran will be out, also; however, there will NOT be a separate announcement for First Lutheran. If you have any questions, please contact the office prior to the snow day event.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: We are thankful for the warmer days which allow us to have recess outdoors and get some fresh air! Some special notes: Pajama Day notes were sent in backpacks. As part of letter "P" week, we get to wear PJ's to school next Mon/Tues! I don't know if the children enjoy it nearly as much as I do!! Also, SHOW and TELL will be on TUES and FRI due to the Stephen Fite concert being on THURS. Remember on Thurs to stop by the classroom for wristbands before you head over to the theater. We will load on the bus at 9:15 but children should be in the classroom at the regular time. Parents attending may take their children from the theater after the performance, but please check out with me first so I know everyone is accounted for. Our theme this week is "Owls" and we are learning the letter "O". God bless!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Kelly: Happy Birthday Lila! Thank you Mrs. Mayer for taking my class so that I could be with my family! I am glad to be back with my kids! Book orders are in back packs today and are due back to me or online by Friday, February 6th. We will celebrate our 100th day of school on Friday. ECE's Stephen Fite concert is on Thursday, February 5th. Look for the reminder note in backpacks today. Our Valentine Party will be on Friday, February 13th. Keep bringing those Dimes for Downs for chapel offering! Our Bible words this week are, Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. Psalm 107:1 We are learning the letter "F" and the number 13 this week. Have a blessed week!

KINDERGARTEN - Ms. Miller: Our class would like to wish Khloe a happy birthday (1-27) this week! Tomorrow, (1-29) is the 100th day of school for kindergarten! We will celebrate with some special activities in our room and we will have a special show and tell. So, please have your child count out 100 small items for show and tell and then put them in a baggie with your child's name on it for Thursday. Next week is our Stephen Fite Concert field trip on Thursday, February 5th. Parents will need to come to the classroom first to get your wristband ticket. We will load the bus at 9:15 a.m. with the students. The concert's show time is 10:30-11:30 a.m., but we will arrive early and go in together because the seating is first come, first seated. Have an awesome week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday - Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. Isaiah 53:4. Thursday is our 100th day of school. Please bring 100 food items for our trail mix. We will have show and tell on Friday. January reading charts are due on Friday for the Pizza Hut certificate. Please bring a shoe box by next week - thank you. Stephen Fite Concert field trip note was also sent home today. Enjoy the nice weather and have a great week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Things are rolling right along in second grade. Memory for tomorrow is the fourth commandment and meaning. The children are doing great on memory work. Thanks for your help at home. We will need shoe boxes for Valentine's boxes by February 4. Blessings. . .

THIRD GRADE - Mrs. Steichen: This weather is amazing! I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am. The kids are spending lots of time outside at recess and P.E. This week: Memory: 1st Article (look for all the Articles in planners today). Reading/Spelling: Test on Friday. Math: Everyone did great on their test, please be looking for flash cards to be coming home over multiplication facts. We will be testing on them each week, starting with 1,2,5,10s next Friday, February 6th. Science: Test over weather next week. Book Reports: Next Thursday, February 5th. I have a couple turned in already, please let me know if you have any questions. Valentine's Day: Please be working on your boxes. Need them in class by February 9th. Supplies: We are starting to run out of supplies; please ask your child if they need anything. Also, we are running out of lined notebook paper--if you could please donate a package that would be greatly appreciated. Talent Show: I have applications for anyone who would like to participate in the talent show. Have a wonderful week!

FOURTH GRADE - Mrs. Sibley: Well we can certainly see God’s plan for spacious classrooms with desks to fill. He brings us new students to fill the desks! Please help us to welcome Savannah to the class. I hope that we are all staying warm as we see many seasons in just a few days. Continue to be reading for AR & Book IT. Some are well on their way to making their goal early! Continue practicing the multiplication table; we are now doing long division, and exponents. Help the kids be patient to be with these specific and detailed processes.

FIFTH GRADE - Mrs. Schatte: It's almost February already! Didn't January fly by with wings?! Parents, please check with your child to see if he/she needs school supplies. Some of us are running low on paper, pencils, and cap erasers. Thanks you so much. Tests this week include spelling and reading on Friday. Memory due Thursday is the 4th Commandment.

Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings, FLS Families! I just can't get over this beautiful weather! I'm afraid we're going to

get spoiled and forget that it's really winter! I hope everyone is doing well and that you're keeping up with all your busy schedules. I truly understand what a challenge it is to balance everything because I'm right there with you! We have a lot going on at school right now. Please check out my school announcement page to see upcoming dates and activities. I'd like to welcome Emma and Savannah Valgora to the FLS family! Emma is a 6th grader and Savannah is in the 4th grade. If you see Emma or Savannah, be sure to introduce yourself and help them feel at home. If you can believe it, we will reach mid-quarter next Wednesday. Parents and Students, be sure to keep up with your grades and assignments through FastDirect. Once we pass that mid-quarter point, it will become more difficult to raise those grades. Getting all assignments in on time, preparing for class, and studying for tests and quizzes will always produce a good result! Blessings on the rest of your week!

Mrs. Hanson: Mini cheer is coming up! If you signed up for the clinic, you will be receiving a letter, shortly, with all the information you and your mini cheerleader will need! We are so excited to work with them this year.

The deadline for reserving rooms in Topeka is Friday. From the sounds of it, the rooms we reserved may be all booked. So, if you still need to reserve a room please call ASAP!! Any cheerleader not being accompanied by a guardian needs to inform me of this and the arrangements that have been made by the end of the week please.

Grade eligibility was checked this week. If your student is ineligible or on probation, let’s make sure we are working extra hard the next three weeks to bring it back up so we have all the manpower we need on the court.

Please check my website for any additional information about classes. Mr. Covert: It’s hard to believe January is almost over! The first month of the quarter has flown by! We’re

moving right along in all our classes. In 8th grade, we’re just about to the War of 1812. Following that, we’re going to fast forward a bit, and hit some major highlights from the next few decades until we get to the Civil War. We’re looking at Monday or Tuesday for a quiz. 7th grade just finished up the states and capitals, and we’re moving on to the continent of Europe. In 6th grade, we’ve gotten done with the Roman Republic, and we’ve just passed the AD mark.

7th grade parents, we’re looking at getting the ball rolling on some DC things. We have the week of September 21 tentatively picked out, meaning we would leave the morning of Monday, September 21, and return Saturday, September 26. I can’t start reserving things just yet, but having a head count on number of families and number of people in each family would be very beneficial to have on hand when that time comes in March and April. We’ll have a logistical meeting before that, but this is an early heads-up in case you need to put in for time off if you want to come along.

the quiz. The students have a ten point assignment due no later than February 5. Each student should teach his/her parent one concept that we’ve covered in math in the last 2-3 lessons. The student should write a one sentence note: “I taught my mom/dad about (specify the concept) on (date)”. Parent signs the note and student brings it to math class for the assignment credit.
