Dear GuestsThe upcoming gala fundraising event is being held in honor of Maestro Riccardo Chailly. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Riccardo Chailly’s LUCERNE FESTIVAL debut. He was appointed Music Director of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA in 2016 and has been actively shaping the ensemble’s identity ever since.

Through his dynamic preparation, which can last for several months and during which he intensively studies each score he has programmed, Maestro Chailly is a constant inspiration to all of those who work with him. He familiarizes himself with every note, seeking to penetrate the essence of the pieces and to command them entirely. It is this tireless commitment, dedication, and enthusiasm that makes him such an important role model for all students at the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY.

We are delighted that you decided to join our elegant gala fund- raising event. It is indeed thanks to your support and commitment that we, the American Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL, will be able to provide the financial assistance to enable exceptionally talented young musicians from the United States to attend the world- renowned LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY in the summer of 2018.

We hope you will have an unforgettable and unique evening in the company of LUCERNE FESTIVAL.

ARTISTS

EMANUEL AX The American pianist EMANUEL AX was born in 1949 to Polish parents in Lviv in the Ukraine, where he took his first piano lessons at the age of six from his father. Following an intermediate stay in Warsaw, the family moved in 1959 to Winnipeg, Canada, and then in 1961 to New York City. It was there that Ax continued his training with Mieczysław Munz at the Juilliard School of Music. In 1973 he won the Young Concert Artists Auditions, a year later the Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv, and, in 1979, the Avery Fisher Prize. Since then, during an international career spanning four decades, Ax has performed with such acclaimed ensembles as the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras and the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics; he has also concertized with the Boston and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Staatskapelle Dresden. Alongside his performances as a soloist, chamber music plays a significant role for Ax. For many years he was a duo partner of Isaac Stern, and in 2016 he performed with the cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the violinist Itzhak Perlman. Ax’s repertoire includes not only the major works of the Classical and Romantic eras but also many compositions of the present day that have been created specifically for him, such as the Piano Concerto by HK Gruber, which he premiered in 2017 with the New York Philharmonic. Within his abundant discography, his recordings of piano sonatas by Haydn are especially noteworthy, having received Grammy Awards in 1995 and 2004; his album Variations, featuring works by Beethoven, Haydn, and Schumann, won the Echo Klassik Award in 2013. Emanuel Ax is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and holds honorary doctorates from Yale University and Columbia University.

The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMYThe LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is a unique and exceptional Summer Academy that was founded 15 years ago by the great composer and conductor Pierre Boulez.

Over a three-week period, these students immerse themselves in selected key works of new music through daily rehearsals, workshops, and lessons with internationally renowned conductors and artists such as Alan Gilbert, Heinz Holliger, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Sir Simon Rattle.

The Orchestra of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY performs its programs during the Summer Festival, and the Alumni of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY tour with their own programs in Europe and the United States.

LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY charges neither tuition fees nor travel and housing expenses to the participants; so the American Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL join with the LUCERNE FESTIVAL in raising funds to cover all these costs. The overall costs for participating students from the United States in 2017 amounted to US $720,000 with costs for each student of US $15,000 (unchanged for 2018).

Thanks to the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, we now

have a worldwide network of over 1,200

Alumni. All of these young and talented

musicians are former participants in

the Academy and come from a total of

about 60 nations.

Introducing LUCERNE FESTIVAL LUCERNE FESTIVAL is one of the most prestigious festivals worldwide – and has been so for 80 years. Three times per year, stars of classical music from across the world meet on the shores of idyllic Lake Lucerne, in the very heart of Switzer-land, and together they celebrate music: from famous orchestras and legendary conductors to virtuoso soloists.

The Summer Festival is the largest of the three annual festivals: within a period of just four weeks, you can experience more than 100 events, among them some 30 symphony concerts. Every year since 2003, the Summer Festival has been launched by the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, which Claudio Abbado founded in 2003. Starting in the summer of 2016, Riccardo Chailly began helming this splendid ensemble comprising internationally acclaimed soloists, chamber musicians, teachers, and members of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Filarmonica della Scala. With the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, which was founded in 2003 by Pierre Boulez, the Festival includes its own master school for new music. Other highlights of the Festival involve one or two composers-in-residence and “artistes étoiles” who present their work in a variety of contexts. Each summer is devoted to a specific theme that governs the choice of works that are programmed. Through such innovative event formats as the 40min series of short concerts, LUCERNE FESTIVAL is forging new paths and opening access to a wider range of audiences.

Established in 1988, the Easter Festival takes place each spring two weeks before Easter and runs through Palm Sunday, with a special focus given to sacred music. The youngest of the three festivals, the Piano Festival, has taken place every year in November since 1998. Celebrated keyboard virtuosos and emerging stars come to Lucerne for nine days to perform recitals, symphonic concerts featuring the piano, and chamber music. The Piano Off-Stage Festival complements the classical programming with atmospheric nights of jazz in Lucerne’s finest bars.

About the City: LucerneThe city, the lake, the mountains – Lucerne offers a plethora of cultural events and a true taste of nature. And it is a city with tradition: already during the Roman period or even earlier, a small settlement was located at the outlet of Lake Lucerne. The Monastery of St. Leodegar was founded in the 8th century.

Today, Lucerne is far more than a Canton or a city in Switzer-land. It is one of the most charming places in Europe and offers extraordinary experiences in terms of culture and nature. And it is also known for its landmarks: the Chapel Bridge, the Water Tower, the impressive Lion Monument, beautiful churches, and the picturesque old town. The city also offers numerous museums, including the Rosengart Collection displaying works by Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee, the Lucerne Art Museum, and the Richard Wagner Museum in Tribschen.

Switzerland lies in the heart of Europe.

Lucerne can easily be reached via the

international airports of Zurich, Geneva,

Basel, and Bern. Zurich airport is located only

70 km from Lucerne and can readily be

reached by train or car.

Surrounded by an impressive mountain landscape and Lake Lucerne, the city also offers unforgettable excursions. These include boat trips on the lake as well as tours to the nearby mountains, such as the Pilatus, with the world’s steepest cogwheel railway, or the Rigi, where Europe’s first mountain railway was installed in 1871.
