Ever Youth Ministry Connect by Fr. Richard McNeillie and Vocation Office

Tuesday, October 1, 2019

Fr. Richard invited all the Vocation Director’s in the Archdiocese to the first ever Youth Ministry Connect on Tuesday, Oct. 1st! Consecrated lady, Joelma Regis (Associate Director), Marlon Barao (Associate Director) and Candice Tyrrell (Governor Serra District 10) arrived the day before to setup and decorate the room at the Co-Cathedral Centre. Fr. Richard talked about the importance of listening and responding to God’s voice in our lives which is discernment. Youth Ministers are so very important in the vocations mission because they are there with the youth day-in and day-out. Hence, they have a role/relationship with them that we in our office do not have. We set time and provided a welcoming atmosphere in order to show them how important they are to us and the Archdiocese. Fr. Richard personally cooked fajitas, Joelma made a Brazlian dessert, and Marlon made some side dish items and contributed with some sweets, and Marissela made sure everyone was taken care of. Marlon shared about the importance of knowing the three ways God makes his will known in order for the Youth Ministry leaders can be aware, understand, and taken action in their own lives; and then in the lives of the people they serve. Fr. Richard provided the sacraments of reconciliation and celebrated Mass for all the Youth Ministry leaders. The group picture you see above was taken the moment right before they were going to Mass at the Co-Cathedral. All in all, everyone had a great day. This day will bear much fruit in the lives of the young people they serve this year and for years to come. Marlon Barao Associate Director - Office of Vocations

St. Edwards 50th Anniversary Jubilee Mass October 13, 2019 - cont’d

St. Edwards was stated in 1968 by Rev. Eugene Francis of St. John the Baptist Church in Hungerford, TX. In the beginning, the parish community consisted of approximately 30 families within a 5-mile radius. Initially, Sunday Masses were held at various homes in the area until arrangements were made to hold Sunday Masses at the Spring Elementary School. Several church buildings have been made, with the most recent building being dedicated in the fall of 2013, by its current pastor, Rev. Christian Bui. Photo below: The Knights of Columbus served at the celebration. Photo below: Ed and Candice Tyrrell, Msgr. Eugene Francis, Dcn. Nick Thompson, James and Janis Hatcher, Anna Psencik and Carol Cason.

40th Anniversary at Sts. Simon & Jude October 26, 2019

October 26 was a very busy weekend for parishioners at Sts. Simon & Jude Church. A beautiful Mass was held in honor of their founding of Sts. Simon & Jude parish 40 years ago, they celebrated their fall festival, it was the Feast of Sts. Simon & Jude, and Rep. Kevin Brady of the Pastoral Council gave Father Pat the Commendation, which will be archived in the National Archive in Washington, DC. Afterwards

they had a big celebration in their Event Center with barbecue dinner, bingo, music and singing, some got quite carried away dancing, including Father Pat. Such fun!

Board Member’s Corner

Carol Cason Carol joined the Serra Club of North Houston in October 2015 and has served as Vice President of Vocations since June 2016. Since joining Serra Carol has learned so much about Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. Working with our fantastic Governor and President, fellow officers and Serra members has been such an inspiration for Carol to try and achieve higher goals.

All the Serra programs are wonderful and rewarding but some are really dear to Carol, such as Called By Name, Altar Service Appreciation, Newman Connection, Traveling Crucifix, Adoration and the seminarian gift bags. Carol is an Extraordinary Minister and has had the privilege of Euchristic scheduling in the past. Carol states that her monthly volunteer time at the Hope Center gives her such joy knowing that she can make a small difference in someone’s life. Her joy is keeping her little nephews during the week and whenever possible. They are so precious and one day when one or more become a priest she can say that she had a little help in guiding them. On most Saturdays she is fortunate to visit her dear mom, Rita Thompson, and spend the day with her, which the both really enjoy. Carol also loves spending time with her husband, Roy, and family.

Our Serrans

Serrans, T. Wayne and Mary Jane Brewster and Daniel and Guylaine Belley started off on a holiday together and ended up on a self-guided Pilgrimage. These are just a few of the memories we want to share. We would encourage you to look up each of these beautiful Basilicas/Cathedrals/Shrines when you have time. It will be well worth it and there is so much more than we can write here. Here is a summary of a couple of the basilicas that we visited? Basilica of St. Anne de Beaupre in Beaupre. It was absolutely beautiful and a meaningful visit. We learned that the native population had a very devout devotion to the Matriarch (grandmother) of the family. After they were converted to Christianity, they continued this devotion by naming their church after Jesus’ grandmother, St. Anne de Beaupre, which has continued to grow and is now a large Basilica honoring St. Anne. We also got to see a 1st class relic of St. Anne, a bone from her forearm. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_of_Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupr%C3%A9

Our Lady of the Cape Basilica/Shrine in Three Rivers http://www.sanctuairesquebec.com/en/our-lady-of-the-cape-shrine

Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral/Shrine in Montreal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary,_Queen_of_the_World_Cathedral

Basilica of St. Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal: (Photo on left) It is a Roman Catholic minor Basilica and national shrine on Mount Royal’s Westmount Summit in Montreal. It is Canada’s largest church and claims to have one of the largest domes in the world. Many pilgrimages visit here because of St. Brother Andre Bessette. He was a very devout man, but was frail and uneducated. He was a doorman at the College of Notre Dame and he wanted to serve God, but the priests felt he could not become a priest, so he remained a brother. They wanted to move him out so they sent him up to a little church on the mount to do as he wished. After a while they noticed many people

going up to see him. He had been healing them and the word spread about the miracles. The priests finally decided to go up and join him after they heard about him. You can find rows and rows of crutches hanging in the Basilica lower level. (Photo on right) He is considered a very special saint and today he is revered by many. There is a 1st class relic at the Oratory, St. Brother Andre’s incorrupt heart. At one time it was stolen for ransom. The ransom was paid and his incorrupt heart is now back in it’s place at the Oratory. https://www.inspirock.com/canada/montreal/saint-josephs-oratory-of-mount-royal-a45901819

Our fifth Basilica to visit was Notre Dame Basilica/Cathedral in Montreal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre-Dame_Basilica_%28Montreal%29

Spiritual Daily Prayers for All Vocation Directors

In the U.S. From the Serrans

Note from Candice Tyrrell: Judy Cozzens was praying in Adoration one day and through the Holy Spirit she heard someone telling her to have Serrans sign-up to pray for all U.S. Vocation Directors one hour every day for one year. Please see below the status of Judy’s on-going project and pray every Serra Club is receptive to her prayer request.

From Judy Cozzens, President Serra USA:

I have confirmed over 160 prayer teams of Serrans that have committed to be prayer warriors for our Vocation Directors. Only 62 more to go. As I have communicated with hundreds of Serrans, I have found a generous group of people that are willing to commit their time in prayer to lift up others.

Members of the North Houston Serra Club have committed to pray for: • Father Richard McNeillie, Vocation Director of Archdiocese of Galveston-

Houston • Father Joshue Neu, SSL, Vocations Director of Diocese of Tyler, TX • Rev. Jason Pazynski, Vocations Director, Chaplain and Teacher at Notre Dame

High School, Diocese of Trenton, NJ • Rev. Donald Williams, Director of Vocations and Seminarians, Diocese of

Scranton, PA We have 28 Serrans that have signed up and volunteered to pray for the four Vocation Directors above! Seven Serrans for each Vocation Director, one day a week for one hour. Thank you for serving as a Serran.

Fellow Club of North Houston Serrans: Many thanks to Dr. Michael Zizelmann, DDS for his terrific Relics presentation at our Program meeting on October 23

rd. At the request of numerous members Phil

Duggan invited Dr. Zizelmann back for a command performance after he made a similar presentation last year. Thanks again Phil for making this happen!!! I am very happy to report that our Seven Serrans Program is fully subscribed as of this writing. As I reported last month Seven Serrans is a simple program --- one North Houston Serra member prays one hour, one day each week for one of the four Directors of Vocations that have been assigned to our Club: Father Richard McNeillie – St. Mary’s Seminary; Father Joshua Neu – Tyler, TX; Rev. Jason Pazynski – Trenton, NJ and Rev. Donald Williams – Scranton, PA. Many thanks for all of you who signed up. Praying for the leaders of those responsible for forming future priests and helping them discern Priesthood as their life-long vocation is an important task.

Our Adopt a Seminarian Program continues to gain steam under the leadership of Diane Harrison. To learn more about this important program and how you can lend a hand please drop me or Diane a note or give one of us a call the old-fashioned way.

As you know we showcase one of our Board members in the Board Members Corner of our Monthly Newsletters. This month we featured Carol Cason, our terrific VP of Vocations.

I hope to see many of you at the Serra USA Rally in Ventura, Ca. January 16-19, 2020. We will be meeting with Serrans from all over the USA to share best practices and get great ideas about how we can continue to create a culture of vocations in all of our parishes. Praise God for the successful resection of Father Ryan Stawaisz’s cancerous tumors during his surgical procedure on November 8

th. It is so good to see Father Ryan

back in action at Prince of Peace!!! Luke 10:2 – The harvest is plentiful, but laborers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. I look forward to hearing from you. Siempre Adelante!!! Your Brother in Christ, Ed Tyrrell
