WHERE WE GO

CREATE YOUR OWN AFRICA STORY - CALL JANICE LEE TODAY TO BOOK: 0 409 301 058

Vinales (Continued) A visit to the Santo Tomas cave complex (one of America’s largest) is a must! It is well worth taking the small boat tour into the caves where you can enjoy a break form the strong Cuban sun and be awe-struck by the stalactites and stalagmites. If you are feeling more energetic you can also arrange, a guided walking tour into the Cueva del Indio cave. It is also interesting to visit a tobacco farm and see how traditional cigars are made in a local factory. If you want to explore the valley more there are plenty of other outdoor tours and activities to enjoy such as bicycle tours, hiking trails, and horseback riding in the hills.

Trinidad With its eye-catching combination of cobblestone streets, colourful houses and old-fashioned locals it’s hard not to feel that you have been lost in time. I recom-mend hiring a bicycle to explore this town, and make sure you bring your camera - from residents relaxing with huge cigars on their doorsteps to old Chevrolets cruising by, there are sure to be some amazing photo opportunities!

If you really want to experience the beaches of the south-east coast including well-known Playa Ancon and La Boca Beach it’s worth hiring a driver or several cabs for a day. I recommend starting on the coast where you can enjoy lazing on the beach or snorkelling in the cool waters. There are lots of lunch options by the beach, and afterwards I suggest visiting one of the nearby waterfalls to reward yourself with a swim in the crystal clear pools – so refreshing!

In the evening, the Folklore show at one of the town’s numerous open-air venues is a must. Cuba has rich and varied music and traditional dance styles that draw their roots from Spain, Africa and France. This is your opportunity to experience it all first-hand, from the Mambo to the Rumba. A Salsa dance lesson can be lots of fun, or you can simply chill out at one of the many live music venues.

Cienfuegos Cuba’s most prestigious coastal spot is only a short drive from Trinidad and definitely shouldn’t be missed. While in town be sure to visit the Palacio del Valle, Cienfuegos’ architectural pride and joy. Its grandiose carvings in Venetian alabaster strike an impressive pose very reminiscent of the Spanish Moorish art & influences in this beautiful seaside city.
