NINER LEADERSCharlotte is led at the plate by senior shortstop Natalie Capone (St. Charles, Ill.) at the plate hitting a team leading .318. Capone has 35 hits in 110 at-bats and has scored 22 runs hitting primarily in the leadoff role while tying fo the team lead with eight stolen bases.

After hitting fi ve home runs last season, senior thirdbaseman Chelsea Lisikatos (Cold Spring, N.Y.) has doubled her total already this season with 10 longballs as she leads the club and ranks fouth in Conference USA in home runs. Hitting .311 from the dish, Lisikatos leads the Niners with a .590 slugging percentage and is second in hits (38) and RBI (27).

Junior centerfi elder Jessica Plemmons (Lexington, N.C.) continues to put together an-other solid campagin as she brings a .299 average to the plate more than halfway through her junior year. Plemmons has started all 41 games in center fi eld and leads the team in at-bats (134), hits (40), doubles (10), runs scored (29) and RBI (29). Ple-mmons has scored or driven in 31% (58-187) of the Niners runs this season.

Right behind Plemmons is classmate Courtney Carroll (Clemmons, N.C.) with a .296 average as she has started all 41 games in right fi eld. Leading the Niners with a .420 on-base percentage, Carroll has 32 hits and 23 runs scored on the season along with eight stolen bases.

Freshman Haley Pace (St. Charles, Ill.) has had a stellar freshman campaign as she has started all 41 games at either second base (34) or shortstop (7) and brings a .289 average into this weekend. Pace ranks third on the team with 37 hits and is tied with Plemmons with 18 extra-base hits scattering six doubles, a team-high fi ve triples and seven home runs. The seven home runs rank third all-time for a freshman.

SENIOR LEADERSHIPThree of the other regulars in the Niners lineup are all senior leaders as catcher Jackie Kleinsmith, fi rst baseman Samantha Slade and left fi elder Hayley Lewis have all started all 41 games at their respective positions and bring a plethora of experience to the lineup. Kleinsmith a rock behind the plate as she has a .992 fi elding percentage and has just two errors and 227 putouts and has thrown out 21 basestealers. Slade also brings stellar defense to fi rst and Lewis continuously sets the table for the rest of the order.

TAKING A LOOK AT THE BLAZERSUAB comes into this weekend’s action with a 26-14 overall record, 10-4 in Confer-ence USA action and currently sit atop the C-USA West Division standings.

The Blazers got off to a hot start in C-USA play sweeping North Texas and UTEP at home on the fi rst two weekends of play before going 4-4 in their last eight games, including taking two of three at home against a solid Louisiana Tech club last week-end.

The hot-hitting squad from Alabama currently ranks third in C-USA with a .304 batting average as a team and are led at the dish by junior infi elder Caitlin Attfi eld

who is hitting an astonishing .493. The New York native has 69 hits (second in C-USA), 13 doubles (also sec-ond), 36 runs scored and a .532 on-base percentage. In 14 conference games, Attfi eld is hitting a blazing .540 (27-50)and has 13 of the Blazers 78 runs. UAB is hitting .325 in conference play with 16 home runs as both marks rank second in the league.

In the pitching circle, UAB has a colletive 4.75 team ERA which ranks 9th in C-USA. Leading the charge is sophomore Cara Goodwin who has a team-low 3.65 ERA and a 11-3 record. Freshman Megan Smith is also a strong arm in the circle posting a 12-6 mark with a 4.99 ERA in a team-high 18 starts and 108.0 innings pitched.

In conference play, Smith and Goodwin are a combined 10-3 with a 4.56 ERA and have thrown more than 80% of the innings in conference play. Goodwin tossed a complete game shutout iallowing only three hits in a 2-0 win over UTEP on March 15.

LAST MEETING BETWEEN CHARLOTTE AND UABCharlotte and UAB last met April 18-19, 2014 down in Birminham where the 49ers were only able to win one in the three-game series. The Blazers won the doubleheader on the 18th winning both games by scores of 8-0 in fi ve innings. The Niners were able to turn the momentum around the following day with a 1-0 win behind a complete game shutout from redshirt junior pitcher Lexi Betancourt. Betancourt allowed only three hits, and four baserunners, while striking out fi ve.

Charlotte and UAB were scoreless through the fi rst six innings until Plemmons stepped to the plate. In the fi rst pitch of the at-bat in the top of the seventh, Plemmons sent it over the right center fi eld wall. Plemmons’ ninth home run of the season proved to be the only run the Niners needed.

The fi rst two game of the series were dominated by the Blazers who combined for 16 runs and 18 hits in the pair of games while shutting down the Niners limiting the offense to only seven hits, including three from Kleinsmith and two from Slade.

BETANCOURT MOVING UP THE RANKSCharlotte will look to ace Lexi Betancourt to take the circle in the game one of the series. Betancourt brings a 15-13 record into the weekend with a 2.69 ERA and currently leads Conference USA with 24 complete games and is second in innings pitched (179.1) and third in strikeouts (183).

She recently passed the 500 career strikeouts against Middle Tennessee on April 4 and currently has 521 to rank 4th all-time in program history and is eight shy of tying Kristen Bowen (2004-07) for third. Other marks the redshirt junior from Garner, N.C. is closing in on are shutouts (5th-16), innings pitched (6th-595.0), wins (6th-49), appearances (T7th-102), and starts (T8th-85).

Aimee DeVos has been at the helm of the 49ers softball program since 1995. After serving as interim head coach for a year in 1994, she was appointed head coach the following season and now enters her 21st year in that role. Having devoted over two decades to Charlotte softball, DeVos has played an integral role in the advancement of the program and the development of her players.

Since moving to the Atlantic 10 in 2006 and then back into Conference USA in 2014, DeVos and the 49ers have en-joyed great success, compiling a .611 conference win percentage with a 96-61 record. During that time, 27 Charlotte players have garnered all-conference honors, while 13 have been selected all-state and eight have earned all-region recognition. DeVos has helped the squad go nearly 80 games over .500 at 234-158 in that span, recording Charlotte’s largest, third-largest and fourth-largest win totals.

Personally, DeVos has reached several career milestones while at Charlotte, most recently earning her 500th career win on March 8, 2014 as the Niners defeated FIU 2-0 on the road. She earned her 400th career win in a 4-2 topping of Elon on April 22, 2010 and is the fi rst 49er head coach to surpass the 200, 300, 400 and 500 career-win marks. Off the fi eld, DeVos boasts another impressive statistic: since taking over as head coach, 100 percent of her players have graduated.

In 2014, Charlotte went 20-29 overall with a 10-13 mark in conference to claim eighth overall in the regular season. The season was highlighted by pitcher Lexi Betancourt winning 19 games and throwing 211 strikeouts in a team-high 220 innings. Catcher Jackie Kleinsmith led the team with a .349 batting average starting 47 games behind the plate leading the team with 51 hits. In 2013, the Niners were 24-26 with a 9-9 mark in the Atlantic 10 as Natalie Capone hit a blistering .364 as she led the team with at-bats (154), hits (56) and stolen bases (10). In 2012, the 49ers posted its seventh consecutive winning season with a 29-24 mark as they went 10-10 in conference.

In 2011, Charlotte completed its sixth consecutive 30-win season, going 30-24 overall with a 10-6 conference mark. Tenaya Tucker led the team off ensively, cementing her spot in the school record books in multiple categories. She be-came the single-season record holder in home runs (12), as well as second all-time in RBIs in a season (47) and third in season batting average (.388) and hits (66). Current Niner Bri Gwaltney moved to third all-time in single-season home runs (10). Five Charlotte players earned a spot on the all-conference team, including Tucker and Gwaltney, who made the fi rst team. Tucker and Whitney Williams earned Academic All-Conference honors, and both were also named NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region, as was Gwaltney.

In 2010, Charlotte reached 40 games in the win column for the third time in program history. The 49ers went 40-18 overall and posted a 15-5 mark in A-10 action. Emily Jeff rey shattered her season strikeout record with 342 and pushed

several program records fall with Emily Jeff ery fanning 294 batters on her way to a 23-win season, the third highest total in Niner history. On the off ensive end, Sarah Malene moved into fi rst all-time with 150 career runs scored and Cee Brooks drove in 113 runs, second-most in school history. Malene, Jeff ery and Smith claimed fi rst team all-conference.

In 2008, DeVos put together a 35-win season, the fourth-highest win total in program history, which included a trip to the A-10 Championship, hosted at Charlotte’s own D.L. Phillips Sports Complex where the Niners took on No. 20 Massachusetts. That season, the 49ers claimed a home victory over rival and then-No. 15 North Carolina. All-conference selection Sarah Malene shattered her 2006 single-season record with 46 runs scored, while Serena Smith re-wrote the record books with 71 hits. Four 49ers were named to the all-tourney team, while Malene and Whitney Williams earned all-conference nods.

DeVos recorded her most successful season in 2006, leading the 49ers to numerous school records, including the most wins in a season (42), as well as the program’s fi rst-ever conference championship when Charlotte went 17-3 in their fi rst season in the A-10, capturing the regular season title. In ad-dition to setting the single-season records for hits, batting average, homers and RBIs, her 2006 team included a record six all-conference selections, including four fi rst-team honorees. Three of those players repeated in 2007 to claim conference nods.

A four-year letterwinner at Drake, the Yorkville, Ill., native boasts a healthy softball resume from a successful program. DeVos graduated from Drake in 1993 with a degree in business marketing. She was a 1993 All-Missouri Val-ley Conference player after leading the Bulldogs to the MVC regular season and tournament championships and a spot in the 1993 National Invitational Championship. A shortstop and outfi elder, DeVos still ranks among Drake’s

all-time leaders in home runs.

In addition to her head coaching duties, DeVos conducts several summer and winter softball camps and clinics. In the summer of 2004, she coached a select group of players to play for the U.S. Olympic team in Charlotte. DeVos is also a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and a member of the NFCA Head Coaches Committee.

DeVos and her husband, Dan, have two sons, Nolan and JJ. Her husband is the Director of the Annual Fund for the Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation.
