Lot: 275Two tables and six chairs by the famous Yorkshire firm of Thompson of Kilburn The Archivist at Thompson's writes: The attached photo shows a table, like yours made here in the 1920s. The items are definitely Robert Thompson's and the mouse shown is almost certainly indicating that Robert himself made the chairs. Robert was asked by the monks at Ampleforth to design and make "Monk's Chairs", and he chose the gridiron to remind the monks of their patron saint. The chairs were a success and folk wanted them in their homes, but Robert felt the gridiron was a bit harsh and so modified the panel to be

what is called a lattice panel. It appears to be woven although it is in fact solid oak. As the seats of your chairs are solid, and adzed, they are clearly some of the earlier chairs, and consequently have an enhanced antique value.

See www.redfern-gallery.co )This is the bronze signed study IV of VIII for 'African Madonna' in lignum vitae by Leon Underwood for St Peter's school Rossettenville in 1935 and now at Cape Town Cathedral. Leon Underwood, born 1890, died 1975, prolific sculptor and artist, at one time tutor of Henry Moore was influenced by African designs. In a recent auction (the Evill Collection at Sotheby's) two of his works created very competitive bidding.
