Charitable funds, a ray of hope to rural poor cancer patients-an experience

Background & Aim • Every year more than 75,000 people are being detected with cancer and total number of cancer burden in West Bengal is more than 3 lacs. • 60% of this population is below poverty line and their treatment is not insured. • The drop out of cancer treatment is 40%
in India.
• Charitable funds from different Govt. and non government sources have proved to be very helpful for poor patients upon their
treatment and cure from ailment. • The aim of our study was to see the benefit of charitable funds to continue treatment of cancer in underprivileged sections of West Bengal.
Methods:
v Study duration : 2009 to 2014 v Number of patients received treatment - 10,800 v Status of the patients: 60% from remote rural areas and below poverty line.
20% from middle class people 20% from affording and insured patients. v Govt. sources of funding : INR for each patient
Prime Minister National Relief Fund - 1-3 lacs State Chief Minister Relief fund - 30,000- 70,000 Governor’s relief fund - 10,000-30,000 President of India relief fund - 50,000-70,000
Non Govt. organizations: INR for each patient Max Foundation - 15,000-20,000 Indo Global Social Service Society -20,000-25,000 Shaila Kapoor Memorial Trust -2,000-5,000
Cancer Aid and Research Foundation -5,000-10,000

Results Total no. of patients applied: 6000 Relief fund Received 1500 Treatment completed 780 (52%) On treatment: 720(48%) Treatment completed by relief fund:
Fully completed : 195(25%) Partially completed : 585(75%)
Conclusions: Ø Charitable aids from different govt. and non govt. sources are becoming the ray of hope to rural poor patients and their families. Ø Thus these funds are providing them strength to fight back the deadly disease cancer.
