Superintendent’s Message Happy New Year!
I hope that you are en-
joying a safe and relax-
ing holiday break and
will be eager to return
on Tuesday, January
5th to complete the first
semester of the 2009-
2010 school year.
Wednesday, January
13th, marks the end of
the first semester and
Thursday, January 14th,
is the first day of the
second semester.
Wednesday January
13th will be a 2 hour
early dismissal for pro-
fessional development.
Teachers will have time
to work on grading se-
mester exams and cal-
culating semester
grades. School will
resume on a regular
schedule on Thursday,
January 14th.
Our first snow days oc-
curred sooner than an-
ticipated, dumping
more than a foot of
snow causing school
cancellations on De-
cember 8, 9, and 10.
December 8, 2009, was
made up on December
23, 2009. December 9,
2009 will be made up
on February 22, 2010.
December 10, 2009
will be made up May
28, 2010. All addi-
tional days missed due
to inclement weather
will be made up in
June.
The district imple-
mented the emergency
calling system to an-
nounce the school can-
cellations. If you did
not receive a call and
would like to be added
to the list OR you re-
ceived a call and would
like to be removed from
the list, please notify the
district office at (641)
774-5967. The notifica-
tion system now has the
ability to send text mes-
sages regarding school
cancellations. If you
would be interested in
receiving a text mes-
sage, please text JOIN
CHARGERS to 292929.
You will receive a con-
firmation text letting
you know that the mes-
sage was received by
our district. We antici-
pate this service will en-
hance our communica-
tion regarding weather
and other related emer-
gency notifications.

Social studies classes will be venturing into the
new geographic area of Australia. Students will
correlate this with reading class and the study of
climate change and global warming.
Math’s focus will be fractions and the real life ap-
plication skill of adjusting recipes. This will lead
to the February unit of Chocolate.
Science class finished the study of atoms and the
periodic table before winter break and will now
start the study of minerals and eventually, rocks.
Dates to Remember:
What a year so far! The sixth grade teachers
want to take this time to thank all of the par-
ents for their support this year. Without you
as our partners in educating your child, the
job would be much harder.
Mrs. Boswell is asking that all parents have
their children read at home. Reading is the
foundation for success in school and reading
at home is vital for the children. So, READ,
READ, and READ!
In 6th grade Writer’s Workshop, students will
be experimenting with new techniques and
text structures while continuing to use the
writing traits of conventions, ideas, and word
choice.
Seventh Grade Happenings!
Happy New Year! Seventh grade students and
teachers are wrapping up the first semester with
a variety of activities. Language Arts classes are
using Google Docs for collaboration on writing
short stories. Geography classes are completing
their Western Europe studies with student pres-
entations covering with the twenty–four coun-
tries they have been studying. Science classes
are completing their vertebrate unit and dissec-
tion of a frog. Literature classes continue vo-
cabulary development with Word of the Day.
Students have finished reading -When Zachary
Beaver Came to Town, by Kimberly Willis Holt.
Students continue to study elements of literature,
journal entries, and comparison and contrast of
the books we have read this year.
Yours in education,
The 7th Grade Team

We are looking forward to second semester. Students will be re-ceiving information to begin their history project, due by the end of the third quarter. In language arts, students will complete some mini lessons on word choice before beginning a short fiction unit, where students will write their own short story. For literature class, students are studying Shakespeare, reading Much Ado About Noth-ing. They will also be sharing their totem poles.
The Department of Education visits every school district
in Iowa on a five-year rotation. The purpose of the visit
is to take a general look at a district’s educational prac-
tices, to offer recommendations for improvement and to
determine if the district is in compliance with accredita-
tion standards. Chariton Schools were scheduled to host
a visit December 8, 9, and 10, 2009, but because of the
winter storm, they were unable to complete the visit.
The Dept. of Education is now scheduled to complete
the visit January 7, 2010.
The team will examine documents and visit with groups
of students, parents, teachers, and other school district
personnel. After 45 business days, a written report will
be sent to the superintendent. District leaders will draw
upon the recommendations from the report and other
needs assessment information to plan district improve-
ments.

The Chariton Community School District
Alternative Program has moved to its new
location over the winter break. The program
is now located at 1516 Court Avenue.
The Alternative Learning Program serves
students in grades 9-12 who seek an alterna-
tive learning environment other than the tra-
ditional high school setting.

"A person is bullied when he or she is exposed,
repeatedly and over time, to negative actions
on the part of one or more other persons, and
he or she has difficulty defending himself or
herself." This is a commonly accepted defini-
tion of bullying which is the basis of most
bully prevention programs.
Chariton students in 3rd to 12th grades took a
Bully Prevention Survey prior to Thanksgiving
break. November was chosen as the time to
give this survey, as students have now had sev-
eral months in school and are comfortable with
their teachers and routines. They are more apt
to share their true feelings than they would
have been earlier in the school year.
Our trainer will present survey results to
teachers during the January 4th inservice. She
will also train teachers in facilitating class meet-
ings designed to make our schools safer, more
positive places for students.
More information will come from building prin-
cipals and students as we continue to improve
our school climate by addressing the concerns
identified in the survey. In addition, we will in-
corporate new strategies to address the goals of
Chariton’s Anti-Bullying Program.
The goals are:
Reducing existing bullying problems among
students
Preventing new bullying problems
Achieving better peer relations at school
A message from: Mrs. Curnutte
Please mark your calendar, on February 3, 2010
from 5:00 to 7:30 pm there will be a ―Fill out the
FAFSA Night.‖ There will be a representative from
the College Planning Center here to assist parents
and students in filling out the FAFSA form on-line.
Please call the high school at 774-5066 if you plan
to attend. There must be at least 8 people commit to
attend this event.

Cold Weather Clothing!
This is a reminder that it is important for students
to come to school dressed warmly and prepared to
play outdoors in the winter. We will usually hold
outdoor recess K-5 if the temperature and wind
chill is zero or above. Students should wear a win-
ter coat, boots, mittens or gloves, a hat or hood,
and something on their legs (extra pair of pants or
snow pants.) The children will enjoy recess if they
are warm and will learn better after recess if their
socks, shoes, and clothes are dry. Depending on
playground conditions, students may be limited to
hard surface areas if they do not have boots or
snow pants.
Often times we have coats, boots, mittens, hats,
and snow pants donated to the school by civic or-
ganizations. If your child is in need of any of
these items, please contact the building principal
and they will do their best to help you get what
you need.

Happy Winter Weather!
In the event that school should start late due to
weather conditions, breakfast will not be
served. The late start puts the time the stu-
dents would be eating breakfast and the time
the noon meal is served too close together.
Also, the cooks do not have enough time to
clean up after breakfast before preparation for
the noon meal begins. In an effort to keep
confusion at a minimum, breakfast will not be
served anytime school begins late.
Late Starts/Breakfast
NO SCHOOL—January 4, 2010 due to staff
