The definition of conflict is to come into collision or disagreement; be contradictory,

at variance, or in opposition.

The conflict in “A Lesson Before Dying” is Grant’s feedback of the racial society, the execution of Jefferson and his inner conflict

of dealing with living in a plantation.

CONFLICT

Grant vs. Mr. PichotGrant was implored by Vivian to go to Mr. Pichot’s house with Tante Lou and Miss Emma, in order to teach Jefferson how to become a man and not die like a hog.

Since Grant is a black teacher and Mr. Pichot is a wealthy white man, Grant is forced to respect him due to his racial inferiority despite his college education. As Mr. Pichot instigates and provokes Grant, Grant, fights back the urge to talk back and disrespect him.

This shows Grant’s attitude towards the white man who looks down on black men.

Grant vs. VivianO On many occasions Grant wants to run away with

Vivian and never come back, he also loses trust in himself and Jefferson.

O Vivian tells him that he loves his people more than he hates living here

Reverend spoke with Grant about Jefferson and God.

Grants atheistic point of view and refusal of teaching Jefferson about God upsets Reverend.

He thinks that Grant is renouncing God because he wont speak about God with Jefferson.

This shows that Grant’s religious views and history with God was not very good.
