Chapter-‐3: Project Management Processes
Project processes: Project processes can be defined as project activities or project tasks that a project manager, project management team or any other stakeholder need to perform in order to complete the project, end to end. The term ‘process’ refer to project activities or project tasks that a project management team needs to manage. PMI does not use the term ‘activity’ or ‘task’, they rather use the term ‘processes’. Project processes generally fall into one of the two major categories: Project management processes & Product oriented processes.
Project management processes Project management processes are the generic processes, which are common for all the projects, irrespective of the nature of the project. Such as initiate, plan, execute, monitor, control and close the project.
Product oriented processes The Product oriented processes are applicable for those specific projects only. For example, plastering, painting etc. are applicable only for construction projects. Requirement analysis, code review would be applicable for software development projects.
Process Groups Depending on what stage of project management life cycle the processes are performed, the project management processes are classified into 5 process groups: Initiating process group, planning process group, and execution process group, monitoring &controlling process group and closure process. Initiation, planning, execution and closing are sequential process groups, wherein monitoring and controlling is one such process group that applies to the entire project lifecycle.

PMBOK ® explains all the project management processes as per the project management process group within chapter number 3. However all these processes are explained in details as part of the knowledge areas, as part of chapter number 4 till chapter number 13. We would rather start explaining the project management processes from project integration management knowledge area and that would automatically cover all the processes that we have in project management lifecycle. The remaining chapters are a part of Whizlabs PMP preparation offering.
