In 2014, thanks to the initiative of previous student leaders and our faculty, RWJMS began having a required health policy component and a healthcare quality improvement component of our Patient Centered Medicine (PCM) course. We had four dedicated course dates for healthcare policy and quality improvement, and we had additional lectures and discussions on quality improvement throughout the year. On our own time, we read a healthcare policy textbook and took a comprehensive examination, which was required for a passing grade for the PCM course.

3. Students in the Class of 2018 made a formal proposal to faculty about including the Open School courses as a required part of our medical school's PCM curriculum.

Saint Agnes Healthcare 1. Created a chapter website 2. Presented some of our QI work in a national conference and helped organize a

St. John Fisher College

1. Started a volunteering event at Urban Choice Charter in Rochester, NY. We had multiple stations to educate the students on proper hand hygiene, nutrition, and measurement to show students healthy food portions. The students took a pre-quiz and post-quiz to look at their knowledge of microbes, hand hygiene, and how to measure liquids before and after - overall, the students grade improved on the quiz after visiting our stations. We handed out notebooks to the students after they were done.

2. We had our first official fundraising event for our chapter. It was held at our school in the atrium on Veterans Day. We had a spaghetti dinner, and veterans ate for free.

3. We hosted guest speaker Kiera Champlin-Kuhn, a registered nurse who is the Director of Quality and Safety at Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, NY. She discussed the various improvement projects that they have completed at her hospital, and the impact each of them had on her institution and their patients. We have also started the process of doing a QI project at her site, focusing on pain management. The project is currently limited to executive members until we get the project going.

Duke University 1. Establishing an interdisciplinary cross-graduate school Quality & Innovation Scholars Program (practicum-like experience linking student teams to ongoing QI work in the Duke Health System; supported by the IHI QI curriculum and a structured program with deliverables)

East Carolina University 1. We started an ICAN project where dental students taught our future health care providers how to identify dental carries at the student run clinics.

2. We had our largest chapter meeting to date with 150 attendees. The topic of discussion was culture competency in the workplace.

3. We collaborated with a fellow multidisciplinary student group in order to put together a panel of recent graduates to discuss their transition into their profession, and how they managed to do so without compromising patient safety or quality of care.

Emory University

1. Projects: We have expanded our chapter’s community-based QI project. Last year, we initiated a student-led QI project at the Good Samaritan Health Center in Atlanta, a community health center serving 25,000 low-income patients annually. This year we have expanded our chapter’s Diabetes Improvement Team at the clinic to be composed of four public health students, two medical students, a student advisor, and a faculty advisor. This cycle, the team is focusing on developing the Diabetes Passport, a standardized self-management tool for diabetics to track annual care processes and diabetes outcomes (HbA1C, BP, etc.)

2. Education: We have formalized and diversified our educational initiatives. --We have developed a monthly Quality Improvement in Clinical Practice Lecture Series. Designed to dovetail with the first- and second-year medical school curriculum, we host a physician with research and clinical interests in QI. To date, we have arranged QI talks in the fields of cardiology, pulmonary medicine and critical care, digestive diseases and general surgery, renal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and neurology. --We have also organized a surgical QI journal club during which students and general surgery residents meet over lunch to discuss a recent journal article and learn how it relates to current surgical practice at Emory. --We work


alongside Emory’s Healthcare Innovation Program and the Goizueta Healthcare Association at Emory’s Goizueta Business School to co-host events and send students to their symposia. --We have designed and implemented a multidisciplinary skills lab model as a means to inspire critical thinking about health care systems and to equip graduate students with QI skills that they could apply to their current and future work. In the fall semester, we held a Healthcare Quality Improvement Training Day & Skills Lab, which consisted of three hour-long, student-led sessions. In the first session, students met in small groups to discuss health care case studies and explore the human factors that typically lead to errors. In the second session, the skills lab portion, they practiced writing aim statements and participated in a hands-on team-building exercise illustrating the stages of a PDSA cycle. Finally, they created flow charts of simple everyday processes, and were introduced to the idea of applying change concepts. The skills lab was attended by 50 students—10 each from the medicine, public health, nursing, allied health, and business graduate programs at Emory. In the spring semester, we organized two more multidisciplinary skills labs. The first, designed for students new to QI, focused on applying the PDSA cycle to a team-based activity. The second skills lab introduced more seasoned students to various Six Sigma tools and techniques for process improvement. More than 20 students attended each of the sessions. We have proven that this multidisciplinary skills lab model works, and plan to offer similar sessions at Emory this coming school year.

3. Open School courses: We have inspired more students to become members of IHI Open School and take the IHI Open School online courses. Last summer, we helped our first cohort of students work through the online curriculum in an organized manner, sending them weekly reminders and encouraging e-mails. We knew of five students who completed all 16 courses. At the beginning of January, we modified our strategy to see if we could inspire even more students to complete the online courses. Through e-mails to five of Emory's graduate programs (Allied Health, Business, Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health), we asked students to “make a pledge” to complete the Basic Certificate (16 online courses) or our QI Crash Course (five high-yield online courses). Sixty-five students were interested in the online courses. Of those students, through our instruction and weekly reminder e-mails, 28 (43%) went on to become members of IHI Open School, 11 (17%) completed at least one online course, and seven (11%) completed all 16 courses to receive the Basic Certificate. Over the course of two months, we were able to track all Emory students' engagement with the online courses through tracking software provided to us by IHI Open School. This provided us with data on membership and various degrees of course completion.
