Renaissance Art

I. Artists in Renaissance Italy

A. Chiaroscuro is a way of using light and shadows to soften the edges of drawings.

B. Many great artists produced work during the Renaissance, including Sandro Botticelli. Botticelli painted frescoes, a method of painting with watercolors on wet plaster.

C. Leonardo da Vinci also trained as an artist in Florence. One of his most famous works was The Last Supper. He is also famous for the Mona Lisa.

D. Raphael Sanzio was one of Italy’s best painters. He painted many frescoes in the Vatican.

E. Michelangelo Buonarroti painted, sculpted, and designed buildings. He painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome and sculpted David, a 13 foot tall statue.

II. The Renaissance SpreadsA. The Northern Renaissance refers to the

art in places we know today as Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and the Netherlands.

B. Northern Renaissance artists used different techniques than artists in Italy. Artists in Flanders, a region in northern Belgium, developed oil painting.

C. Albrecht Dürer was an artist best known for his engravings. Engravings are made in wood, metal, or stone and covered in ink. The image is then printed on paper.

D. Jan Van Eyck was a great oil painter.
