Chapter 723 News Experimental Aircraft Association July 2017 President’s Message By Tom Ridderbush Greetings 723 Members June was not a good month for General Aviation in Ventura County. There were a total of three downed airplanes; Thee fatalities and one seriously injured. The cause of these crashes is still under investigation. We know that in one of them, the pilot was seen flying very low before striking power lines. This is my opinion, but why would anyone fly that low? We hear way too often about an accident from this type of flying. Whenever we fly, we should do whatever we can to minimize the risks. Things like a good preflight inspection and running up your engine are only a small part. Before we get to the airport we should have a good understanding of weather and the airports we are taking off from and landing at. One thing that always gets me is why do people fly anywhere without getting flight follow- ing? Is it really that hard to make a radio call and ask for it? Is it really that much of a bother to have ATC looking out for you? Last month Ross Gregory spoke to us about safety. Some of his figures were a bit of a surprise. The biggest one that stuck with me is that experimental aircraft account for 5% of the GA fleet. But they account for 25% of fatalities. With that in mind, I am going to try to get more of our programs set up to learn about how we can build and fly experimental aircraft safer. On a more positive note, Doug Wagner has agreed to be our official Hangar Boss. Please thank Doug when you see him. Our chapter is very fortunate to have members like Doug. This month we will be appointing an election committee. I know it seems early, but it’s time to get a slate of candidates to run in the November elections. We will be asking for candidates in the upcoming meetings. If you want to help steer the chapter, please consider running for a board position. I will not be at the July meeting, as I am going to visit my family in Wisconsin. It is my annual summer trip. Please have a safe, fun and enjoyable month of July. Trio Autopilot Project UpdateBy Paul Odum, The STC Group LLC

Jeff Ley, Jerry Abramson, and Mark Sullivan are conducting finaltesting on the 172 and 182.

Jeff will be traveling to Jackson, TN this Sunday to install the ProPilot in the AOPA Sweepstakes 172 at Tennessee Aircraft Servic-es. Those of you who are members of the Cessna Pilots Associa-tion know that Paul New is the owner of TAS. Paul has been apart of this project from the beginning.

We are scheduled to make the final test flight with the SmallAircraft Directorate on July 15th.

The STC issuance date is scheduled for July 19th. I believe thePMA will be issued the same day.

So we are somewhat busy. Most of the documentation wasprinted yesterday and will be completed today. We must FEDEXdocumentation to the Chicago ACO tomorrow. When the ACOreceives the binders, The STC Group LLC should pass the “25pound” test.

Young EaglesBy Merja Reed, YE Coordinator

June gloom got us again at Camarillo! However, with the pa-tience of the youngsters and three of our pilots, we got 19 kidsin the air at Camarillo on Saturday. Big thanks to Jack Vautin,Ron Hirsty and David Lunn for waiting for the blue skies to appear.

Santa Paula got lucky on Sunday and the gloom cleared up forthem. 32 youngsters received YE flights. Thanks to all the pilotsfor making multiple flights.

CWA / WOC UpdateBy Marcel Ferland

Planes that "should" be at the air show this year: Starting off withthe C-17, C-130, E-2C Hawkeye, Marine UH-Y and AZ-1Z, CoastGuard helicopter, AH-1 Cobra (rides available before and afterair show) two F-18 Super Hornets, two A-10 Warthogs. CAFwarbirds, other warbirds from different groups, P-63, P-38,several Mustangs, C-53, C-47. and I think either a TBM or aDauntless. The Ravens again, Vicky Benzing, John Colliver in aT-6, and Sammy Mason. I am sure I am missing some, but that'swhat I remember off the top of my head.

A few contracts have been signed, not only for the performers, but also equipment that make the air show function. Barricades, fencing, golf carts, porta-potties and wash stations; The list goeson and on.

Please remember to sign up on the CWA website to volunteer forthe air show. I know some people think it's a pain in the you knowwhere, but you can't get enough insurance coverage, so pleasetake the time to do so. For those of you who don't know thewebsite, its www.wingsovercamarillo.com/volunteer. Timeschange and we have to adapt!

The air show is fast approaching and before you know it, its here!I want to personally thank all the loyal EAA members who comeout every year to do setup on Friday and even some of you helpedwith cleanup on Monday. Everyone, sometimes forget that theair show doesn't end on Sunday night. Good health to everyone.

Vietnam veteran signup is coming along, around 150 so far. Ifyou are a Vietnam era veteran, you can sign up to receive yourVietnam pin and a bumper sticker. This was started by theDepartment of Defense to commemorate the 50th anniversaryof the US involvement in Vietnam. Long overdue in my opinion.

This is how it works. Go to the CWA website, click on Event Day,scroll down to Vietnam War Commemoration and fill out the formto register. You then will receive a confirmation and best of all,1 (one) general admission free ticket to attend the air show, plusfamily members will receive a discount price of $15, could alsobe a friend, etc. Please be aware the cutoff for registering isAUGUST 10th, no exceptions and you must have a valid emailaddress. All the details are on the website.

AH-1 Cobra rides in the front seat are $350 for about 10-12minutes.
