– Purpose of these gifts (12-16)• Equipping the saints for work of ministry• Edifying the body of Christ

– The unity of the faith– The knowledge of the Son of God– A perfect man– The measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ

• That we might no longer be children– Tossed by every wind of doctrine– Tricked by the cunning craftiness of deceivers

• That we might speak the truth in love– In order to grow up in all things into Christ– Joined and knit together with every part doing its work

Chapter 4Walk In Purity (17-32)

• Not as the Gentiles walk (17-19)– Futility of their mind– Given over to licentiousness

• As learned from Christ (20-32)– Heard, taught by Him and the truth which is in Him• Put off the old man, corrupt in its deceitful desires• Renewed in the spirit of one’s mind• Put on the new man (self) created after the likeness of

God in true righteousness and holiness

• Not as the Gentiles walk (17-19)• As learned from Christ (20-32)– Putting away the things of the old man:• Lying, but speaking the truth in love• Anger, giving no place to the devil• Stealing instead of working and giving to those in need• Corrupt speech, speaking with grace to edify those who

hear• Grieving the Holy Spirit, by whom we were sealed for

the day of redemption• All bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, evil speaking, all

malice

– Instead be kind to one another• Tender-hearted• Forgiving• Just as God in Christ forgave us

Chapter 5Walk in Love (1-6)

• As Christ loved us (1-2)• Not like the world (3-7)– Such things which shouldn’t even be named

among the saints– Such have no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ– The wrath of God will come upon the sons of

disobedience

Chapter 5Children of Light (7-14)

• Now light in the Lord (7-10)– Bearing the fruit of the Spirit (Light)– Proving what is acceptable to the Lord

• Have no fellowship with works of darkness (11-14)– Expose them

Chapter 5Walk Wisely (15-21)

• Circumspectly – Not as fools, but wise– Redeeming the time, the days are evil– Understanding the will of the Lord

• Filled with Spirit, not intoxicating spirits– Singing

• Speaking to one another• Making melody in your heart to the Lord

– Giving thanks• Always, for all things• To God, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

– Submitting to one another in the fear of God

Chapter 5Walking in Matrimonial Harmony

• Duties of wives (22-24)– Submit to husbands, as to the Lord– Husband is head of the wife– Christ is head of the church, Savior of the Body

• Duties of husbands (25-32)– Love their wives as Christ loved the church• Gave Himself up for it• So he might sanctify and cleanse it through the washing

of water by the word• Present it to Himself a glorious church• No spot or wrinkle• Holy and without blemish

Chapter 5Walking in Matrimonial Harmony

• Duties of husbands (25-32)– Love wives as their own bodies– Nourish and cherish• Even as the Lord does His church• We are members of His body

– In marriage man and woman become one just as with Christ and His church

• Summary of duties (33)– Let each man love his wife as himself– Let each wife respect her husband
