Design Portfolios

What is portfolio?• A unique object of work

• A collection of artifacts that demonstrates your skills and abilities

• A unique personality that reflects who you are

• It identifies your strengths and weaknesses

• It is not a stack of projects crammed together but a cohesive organized display

Expectations are high!

• Your work is being reviewed by another designer

• You've got to spark their interest

• How it is organized says a lot about your organizational skills

Traditional portfolios

• Printed format

• Most interviewers like to see some work in person

• Size is important

Digital portfolios• Complements the print

portfolio

• CD-Rom or DVD

• Web site

• Shows you are up on technology

• Does not replace the traditional portfolio

• Broadens your reach and allows a less expensive means to distribute your portfolio

Most important body of work

you will produce• Your portfolio is the single most

important instrument that will help you get a job.

• Take its development very seriously.

Chapter 2

Diversity of Portfolios

What sets you apart?

• Know your competition

• Your portfolio needs to be distinct and creative

• It should be polished with an attention to detail

• It should show that you take pride in your work

Know your competition

• Fierce competition

• One typo could turn someone off

• Laid-off designers are out there

• Use only your best work

• Show work that says "I have the skills and creativity to be a benefit to your firm."

Assignment 1 (10 points)

• Teams of 2-3 people, conduct Internet research and share your findings in an email to me and I'll forward to the class:

• Sample ID portfolios to study

• Example resumes and cover letters

• Interviewing tips

• Free fonts

• Job posting and recruiter websites

Chapter 3

Knowing your audience

"If you want to get somewhere, you first must know where you are

going."

How is a portfolio reviewed?

• The portfolio is a design project and will be evaluated first. How if presents, reads and its layout.

• Reviewers will be looking for something in particular. Know what the company does and have examples of that type of work in your portfolio.

• It's hard to say what your reviewer really wants to see

• Homework due on Friday, September 9th via email.

Chapter 4

Gathering Materials

Time to start now!

• Make folders and start filling them with digital content

Organization

• Theme (nature, sustainable, casual, etc)

• Skill set

What will you need?

• Schematic work: bubbles, blocks, ideation drawings

• CAD construction drawings

• BIM drawings

• Rendered floor plans elevations and perspectives

• Models

• Digital boards

• Material selections and FF&E

• Limit elemental work and work you have no desire to do.

Homework• Self study due on Sept 9th via email (25points)

• Personal brand and logo next class for critique (10 points)

• Bring all projects to next class meeting to photograph (10 pts)

• All digital files are organized and converted into jpeg images in folders (10 points)
