Objectives

•Learn about East Asia’s major natural resources.

•Find out how people of East Asia use land to produce food.

Page 3: Chapter 1

Vocabulary

•Developing country▫A country that has low industrial production

and little modern technology•Developed country

▫A country with many industries and a well-developed economy

•Terrace▫A level area in a hillside

•Double-cropping▫To grow two or more crops on the same land

Page 4: Chapter 1

East Asia’s Natural Resources

•East Asia has natural resources to produce energy: coal, oil, and water.

•East Asia also has raw materials to produce goods like electronic equipment.

•Resources are not evenly distributed in East Asia

•Some countries have more than others.

Page 5: Chapter 1

East Asia’s Natural ResourcesMineral Resources in the Koreas•Limited natural resources•Coal & iron found easily in North Korea

▫Used for manufacturing•Little coal or iron in South Korea where more

manufacturing takes place.▫S. Korea has tungsten and graphite

• If the two countries shared their resources, both would benefit. But they do not share. S. Korea must import its iron, oil, and other resources.

E. Asia’s Natural Resources

Mineral Resources in China•Large supply of mineral natural resources

▫Copper, tin, iron•One of the world’s largest supplies of coal

▫Found in the northern part of China•Also has oil deposits

▫Uses most of the oil it produces, but does export some

Water Resources

•Using China’s swift flowing rivers seems perfect for creating power, but it is very costly to build dams and hydroelectric plants.

•Ocean and inland waters have been an important resource for food.

•Aquaculture, fish farming, has been practiced for centuries in Asia.▫Greatly expanded in the 80s and 90s

Using the Land• Because the population of East Asia is so large,

they must use every bit of land to farm.▫14% in China▫12% in Japan▫14% in North Korea▫19% in South Korea

About the same amount of land used for farming in the US

• Farmers use terrace farming (cutting flat steps into hillsides) and double-cropping (planting 2 crops at the same time) to better utilize the land available.
