Chapter ITHE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
In the present time education is very much needed. In fact, the government
established a new curriculum which is base internationally, the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum. Because of modernization and high standard in education system the
above curriculum is now highly implemented in the Philippines. Through this curriculum
new techniques and grading system is currently implementing, lots of seminars were
offered to all public and private teacher for their implementation in the said curriculum.
In this new system, there are new academic excellences and achievements of
students will be recorded. In the learning process of students, academic performances
are analyze base on their participation, quizzes, projects, and periodical tests, the
teachers used different tools to determine the progress of his/her students. They
preferably use report cards for the presentation of students’ academic performance in a
whole year or semester, some students failed to pass but some are good and better.
This output process for students is always repeated during his/her education, starting
from Kindergarten, Grade School, High School and even College. According to Robert
Kiyosaki, "Our current educational system focuses on preparing today's youth to get
good jobs by developing scholastic skills rather than influencing them to become
entrepreneurs and thus generate more jobs.” It has an important factor that contributes
to the nation’s growth where they produce competent people who will help for the
solution of one of the country’s problems unemployment. Tertiary education gained from
universities and colleges especially has its paramount roles in developing the society,
and for training the future elite.
Do academic achievement (I.e. grades, course load, etc.) represent an accurate
reflection of your ability and potential? The value placed on good academic
performance has encouraged academics like school administrators, teachers,

researchers, and other stakeholders, such us students as well as their parents to focus
a great deal of attention on the identification of factors that influence academic
achievement., The Philippine Journal of Education, 2005.
There are many reasons for going to a universities or colleges including
naturally- a love of the subject to be studied and the opportunity to experience a
different way of life. Higher education is more than a production line for work ready
graduates. Many students want to have a stable job someday; they believe that, in order
to succeed in a career, you should create a good foundation. Academic records are a
statement of students’ hardship during his/her education. Before admitting in a
universities or colleges, these records are the first requirement to handle off.
In a traditional system of applying a certain job, some employers want good
academic records, while others want experiences or both, they also consider gender,
area of residence, school graduated, living with a partner, practical support, and the
receipt of adjustment training. (Evening Gazette- Middlesbrough, England, November
25, 2009).
Businesses offer a lot of opportunities aside from the fact that people can make a
fortune out of it. It gives people the chance to create jobs and thus help in the problem
on unemployment. It allows anyone to set goals and achieve them in his own pace. One
of the factors that determine the effectiveness of an academic institution is through the
employability of its graduates. The quality of graduates is very much a function of quality
instruction and facilities because these will help ensure that graduates are equipped
with the knowledge, skills and values that will enable them to work in their respective
field.
In the book Employment and Career Opportunities after Graduation by Arcelo
and Sanyal, the existence of a huge number of educated unemployed can lead to a
certain amount of political instability in a country, for they being among the educated
class and knowledgeable about the privileges society can offer, feel doubly deprived. In

this matter, the analysis of the unemployment situation in the Philippines shown that the
young graduates is still in the job-hunting stage.
Universities and colleges nowadays all over the country offer many courses for
students to serve as a training ground for them to enhance their skills, abilities and to
gain more knowledge about the degree that they are taking up. Many courses may suit
their specializations and skills as individuals so that they are able to become more
confident with the course they are enrolled in. One of these is Leon Guinto Memorial
College, which offers different courses; two of these are Bachelor of Science in
Accountancy and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. This institution strives
for better future of its students, through enriching academic competencies in a higher
degree of students’ performance, and it elevates the dignity of a man produces creative
and productive graduates.
Background of the Study
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc. was born 1971 out of merger of Atimonan
Academy and Quezon Memorial School and still it was located at 443 Mabini St.
Atimonan Quezon. These prestigious schools were headed by two educators: Atimonan
Academy under former Judge Mariano v. Eleazar and Quezon Memorial School under
the former Board Member Domingo P. Escasa. The school was named after the
illustrious person named Leon Guinto Sr. who was a former official of the province.
In the same year, the College Department started its service to the youth of
Atimonan. Initially, it offered Bachelor of Arts. Years after, Bachelor of Science in
Accountancy and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration were offered. (LGMC

Today, the said courses are expanding. Bachelor of Science in Business
Administration consists of different major, Marketing Management, Financial
Management, and Human Resource Development. In addition to this, Bachelor of

Elementary Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Filipino, English,
Mathematics, and PEHM has also offered.
The College of Business and Accountancy of Leon Guinto Memorial College
comprises all the arts and technique in helping the business world. The students
become more productive, effective and creative in business strategy and accounting
knowledge application. Students attend various trainings, seminars, quiz bee and even
non academic contest outside the school with their respective student’s business and
accountancy association in the like of Junior Philippines Institute of Accountants (JPIA)
for accountancy students and Junior Business Executive (JBE) for business
administration students. There are other enhancing activities which are held and
actively participated in by the students in enhancing their minds in a broader business
and accounting horizon. Thus, the College of Business and Accountancy becomes the
dominating aspects of the work of all collegiate students with professional and technical
competencies.
Every Graduate has its own academic record; they also have their diploma and
certificate of college completion. Academic record is the compilations of grades, honor
received, and credentials during school days and it represents the overall academic
performance that has been performed. Graduates of Leon Guinto Memorial College are
the fruit of the institution; they serve as inspiration to other students who taking up the
same course today.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine if there has relationship between academic records
and employment status of LGMC Business and Accountancy Graduates 2004-2014. It
seeks to answer the following questions:

6. Do academic grades have a relationship to employment status?
Significance of the Study
The researcher is conducting this study to know whether there is a relationship
between academic records and employment status of LGMC Business and
Accountancy Graduates 2004-2014, and this study is significant to the following:
College of Business and Accountancy Department –this study will help them
to determine the strengths and weaknesses of Business and Accountancy course
based on the responses of the graduates in terms of the relationship between academic
record and employment status. It will also help to determine what specific areas should
focus more and further enhance the academic performance in order to make the
program more responsive towards preparing the students for their future professions.
Business and Accountancy Students- this will help them realize whether the
knowledge and skills developed in the program would be useful to them in their future
careers. It will also encourage them to appreciate and pursue their course in a high level
of academic standard.
Graduates of Business and Accountancy- this will help them to have an
insights whether there is a relationship between their academic record and current
employment status.
Researcher- this study will teach him to value time, patience and hard work. He
will also become more sensitive and knowledgeable about the profession he is studying.
Future researchers- this will serve as a guide or reference in their future studies
on the subject matter. This will also help them to continue study in the future.
Addition to that, this study will also help to determine and assess the
effectiveness and the relevance of Business and Accountancy Curriculum, knowledge,
skills and work values acquired by the graduates to their employment; identify the

personal and professional characteristics and job placement of Business and
Accountancy graduates and the school related factors associated with their
employment.
Scope and Limitation
The scope of this study is the relationship of academic record and employment
status of LGMC business and accountancy graduates 2004-2014 which includes
different major course from Bachelor of Science and Business Administration; Marketing
and Financial Management, and from Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.
The researcher will get 100 respondents from business and accountancy
graduates, in the process, the researcher will give different questionnaire to them to
gather relevant information regarding their academic record and employment status.
Specifically this study will research the relationship between these variables: academic
record and employment status. This study also shows how academic records influence
the employment status of the graduates.
