We have been so concerned with the international world: will Iran continue to develop their nuclear pro- gram, will they continue to expand their new rocket program capable of carrying a satellite into orbit? Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas continue to threaten Israel's borders and her citizens. The re- sult of Israel's release of many Palestinian prisoners has yet to be determined. The genocide in Darfur continues to be a horrific nightmare. OPEC has held quite a grip on our wallets and the mortgage crisis continues to affect so much of our lives. Our Jewish world has lost many; the return of the bodies of the Israeli soldiers: Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser and so many others who lost their lives merely because they live in and will protect the State of Israel. And the Jewish world mourned the loss of Marcel Marceau, Joey Bishop, Norman Mailer, Sidney Pollack and Harvey Korman, Within our Temple Sinai Family we have lost dearly beloved members. Their loss is deeply felt. In recent memory, we have celebrated wonderful memories; the births of children and grand- children of our congregants. Currently it is the second week of August and I have been fixated by the summer Olympics. The successes of Michael Phelps, Dara Torres, three American medals in the 400m hurdles, the first American woman since 1932 winning gold in the discus, our (re- deem) basketball team, the women's softball team complete victory - gosh, I could go on and on with our sense of American pride. It is now our season to consider nostalgic glimpses of a world that through our actions will one day consist more of peace and innocence than war and evil. In a short time, we will gather in our fine clothing seeking resolution and purity in our hearts for our sins committed this past year. We come together as a community not only to celebrate the “birthday of the world” but also to deeply explore who we are and how we can improve. We do not take our High Holy Days lightly. There is heaviness when we tear off the last page of the calendar year 5768 and consider what the year 5769 will be. How will you improve yourself? How will you be part of enhancing your family and our Tem- ple Sinai family? What will you do to advance the community in which you live? What can you do to heal our environment? Will you be open to our liturgy, music and the sound- ing of the shofar to arouse in you a sense of redemption? Redemption cannot be at hand unless each of us, individually, are open to being aroused by our Holy Days, our Days of Awe and open to the possibilities of the future. We are inheritors of a religious tradition that emphasizes reason and ritual, the spiritual and intellectual. Will you be part of our continuity and vitality? Our tradition offers each individ- ual and every generation the opportunity (and I might add, the duty) to interpret and cherish our texts and liturgy in a manner that reconciles what went before with our unshakable contempo- rary convictions. In this time of introspection and celebration let us look forward to the possibilities that can unfold if we are open to them. Let us do the required work leading up to our High Holy Days and during, so that we may be open to being aroused by the sounding of the shofar. Then, may each of us and our loved ones be inscribed in the Book of Life. Shanah Tovah V' M'tukah - A Happy, healthy, sweet New Year. Religious School CalendarSundays: September 7, 14, 21, 28; October 5, (12 no school), 19, 26; November 2, 9, 16, 23, (30 no school)

Note from the President September, October, November 2008Many of you, like myself, are list makers. As summer draws to a close, and we approach the New Year, it

is time to make multiple lists: preparing for the holidays, getting children and families ready for school and work, and accepting communal and organizational responsibilities. We are in a constant state of organizing and arrangingour lives. My family says that I make so many lists that I have lists for my lists! As the New Year offers us mo-ments of reflection, it is also a time of celebration for we are thankful to have accomplished so much. As we dip ap-ples in honey, we savor the sweetness of past successes and hope for an equally sweet future.

Looking into our future at Temple Sinai, we have many wonderful events, projects and parties planned forour congregation and community. By the time you have received this newsletter, our school will be underway, serv-ices with our Rabbi and Cantor will have started, we’ll be having our Golf Outing, and the High Holidays will berapidly approaching beginning with Selichot Services, the beginning to the New Year.

Temple Sinai gives us the opportunity to be involved and to make our community a better place, provid-ing us with many ways to accomplish it. We’re looking forward to many Shabbat/holiday celebrations and B’naiMitzvot (Bar and Bat Mitzvahs), as well as fundraising parties and events that no one should miss.

Please come with us into our future, join us for our many events, parties and outings, and put Temple Sinaihigh on YOUR list.Wishing you a Healthy and Happy New Year Roni Schneider

Religious School September/October/NovemberThe start of a new school year is always exciting-- new books, changing classes, and a chance to start again withrenewed enthusiasm. We welcome the NewYear and New FriendsSeptember 20, Saturday - 6PM

Selichot begins with dessert and a movieComing from the Hebrew word for “forgiveness,” Selichot involves the recitation of penitential prayers

that are the work of medieval liturgical poets. The liturgy and music of the Selichot service are intended to instilla mood of solemnity that serves as a prelude to the sacred themes of the High Holy Day season.

Please join us for dessert and a movie “The Quarrel” followed by discussion with Rabbi Poticha andSelichot Saturday night service.

The dessert buffet is coordinated by Asha Rotstein, so please call her and let her know what you wouldlike to bring. She’ll need help setting up and cleaning up. 631 673 4620

Please sponsor an Oneg Shabbat...Oneg is defined as a “pleasure” or “delight”. In keeping with our joyous Sabbath tradition, we conclude

each Friday night service with Kiddush (the blessing we say or sing over a cup of wine) and other sweets we eat. This happy gathering of family and friends is called an Oneg Shabbat. At Temple Sinai, members take turns host-ing the Oneg in celebration of meaningful events, such as Bar/Bat Mitzvah, birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations, and for the personal pleasure it brings. If you would like to host an Oneg, please call Marcia Goldberg.(516) 541 8123. If you would like to be a part of this tradition but are unable to do the physi-cal set, we would gladly accept your donation ($35.00) and arrange the Oneg on your behalf. We ask all Temple Members to sponsor an Oneg every year.

Please send donations to Temple Sinai,P.O. Box 70, Massapequa, NY 11758

We remember Bernice Zwanger, a cher-ished member of Temple Sinai.

Bernice and Jerry Zwanger are members of TempleSinai since 1969. Throughout the years they have beenvery supportive of our fund raising efforts.Bernice was an accomplished attorney, qualified to

practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. With her busy schedule, she always found time for Tem-ple Sinai.About twenty years ago, when we undertook the re-

design of our Bima and Aaron Kodesh (Torah Ark), Ber-nice was the driving force. Through her knowledge andacquaintance with craftsmen, we renovated our bimah tothe way it appears todayWhen the bimah was finished, Bernice felt it needed

one more finishing touch. She and her husband, Jerrydonated the two beautiful chandeliers that hang above.

Bernice left her mark on the world and here at Tem-ple Sinai, we will miss her, and to Jerry and her daugh-ters and their families we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

Thank you! Todah Rabah!Dear Friends:This past June Temple Sinai hosted a lovely affair; its purpose was to honor my ten years as your Rabbi. In

an e-mail I previously sent, I tried to express my awe and gratitude. But let me say again:The evening was spectacular. The committee, which worked tirelessly, made sure that no detail was overlooked. The vegetarian cuisine was delicious. The music from Chamber to Jazz was perfect. Your gift to me was beauti-ful and adorns my office. The words from our President: Roni Schneider, a Board Member: Leslie Eichen and astudent from our Religious School: Erica Harmon touched my heart deeply.I know that you have much on your calendars and certainly that night was no different. But, throughout the

evening there was a flow of our congregants so much so that I believe almost our entire membership came, if notfor the entire evening then for a hug and words of respect and kindness. My mother and sister, who came in town for the event, were overjoyed with the honor to lead motzie and to

be able to share the evening. I thank you for your openness and graciousness toward them. They had a greattime! We know that one of the reasons to honor one's Rabbi is to raise funds for the synagogue, which continues to

come in (thank you). But, what I felt that night was not the financial gain Temple Sinai would appreciate, but thelove and respect we have for one another. For that I am deeply appreciative.Again, I thank you for the evening, the gift, the photograph album which I was given the following week and

for all we have shared these past ten years. Together we continue to build a solid foundation of honoring one an-other, living by our contemporary Jewish beliefs (mingled with tradition) and being present for one another.May we continue to move from strength to strength.Todah Rabbah: Rabbi Poticha
