February 8-10
New Years Greetings from our
Council President, Paul Witzel
First, let’s take a little trip back in history.
Edmonds Lutheran Church was created by
the consolidation of three different local
Lutheran churches, some ten years ago.
Deciding to make our main campus the
236th site left us with two vacant properties.
In 2011, we leased the 9th Avenue site to
Grace Lutheran Church. A year later, we
sold the 212th property to Calvary Chapel.
Being a landlord and lender has been good
for ELC as we have used those incomes to
maintain and expand our ministries.
Now let’s jump ahead to 2015. In October,
we received an unsolicited cash offer of
$995,000 (currently the offer is 1,050,000)
from Calvary Tabernacle United Pentecostal
Church of Mountlake Terrace for the 9th
Avenue property. For reference, the county
assessed the property value at $1,008,000.
Calvary Tabernacle recently sold their
property and are looking for a new home.
The offer stipulated that they understood
that we have current tenants and they
would allow them to stay until the expiration
of the lease at the end of 2016. After
receiving the offer, the Congregation
Council reached out to Grace Lutheran to
ascertain their future plans. The Council
also moved to hire Kim Hutchins and Steve
Pelluer of Colliers International to serve as
our agents in a potential sale. They helped
ELC negotiate the current lease. Grace
Lutheran responded that they would like to
purchase the property for $1,000,000. In
their offer, they would provide ELC with a
$150,000 down payment, and ELC would
lend the balance to them at a 5% interest
rate. They would make interest-only
payments of $3,541 each month for seven
years, at which time the $850,000 would be
due. Currently, Grace Lutheran pays $3,000
a month rent, and our agents believe that
current market value monthly rent would be
$4,000-$4,500. Their offer is similar to the
terms we have in place for the 212th prop-
erty. Please note that these figures are cur-
rent as of the writing of this article and may
be different by the time you read this.
Edmonds Lutheran now has a decision to
make. As you know, we just completed the
Strategic Planning Process, from which
several important goals emerged. Being a
landlord was not an item that rose to the
surface. Based on that and current market
conditions, the Council believes that this is
a good time to sell the property. The two
offers are similar in amount, but quite
different in terms. Calvary Tabernacle’s
offer is straightforward: cash. The
acceptance of this offer would initiate a
discussion about what to do with the funds
from the sale.

Confirmation Kids: We hope you had a restful
break, now its back to “hitting the books!”
Confirmation classes resume Wednesday
January 6th
at 5:30 and will continue every
Wednesday.
The Nominating Committee is seeking
members that are interested in serving on
the Church Council and congregational
committees. If you have any interest in
serving as a member of the Church Council,
now is the time to contact the Nominating
Committee. A term on the Church Council is
two years and the meetings are held on the
second Tuesday of the each month at 7:00
p.m. Serving on the Church Council really
gives you an opportunity to see and
experience how the church works firsthand
and be a partner with our church staff in
carrying out our ministry. One of the
strengths of Edmonds Lutheran Church is the
dedication and care that our leadership team
works on behalf of our congregation. The
following also need volunteers for service:
Endowment Committee, Learning Center
Board, Nominating Committee and a delegate
to the Synod Assembly in May. If you would
like to contact one of the members of the
Nominating Committee for more information,
or volunteer to serve in one of these areas
please contact one of these people: Carol
Swackhammer, Dave Ruud, John Bumanglag
or Dean Phillips.

Church Life News
Relationships are vital to the health of your
congregation and the entire ELCA.
The Lutheran magazine’s charge is to
establish a connection with members of
congregations to help them grow in faith and
assist them in the mission and efforts of
their congregation and the larger church.
The Lutheran is where members find news
and views on faith, Scripture, mission,
advocacy and more - impacting daily life.
The magazine is a resource for education,
outreach and evangelism while providing a
forum for discussion on issues of the day.
Members of subscribing congregations know this. Their subscriptions to
The Lutheran keep them informed of news, events, and issues impacting
Lutherans locally, nationally and globally. Through their subscriptions
they also have access online to more than 9,000 archived articles and
400 study guides, making subscription renewals a solid investment of
congregational resources.
Non-subscribing congregations can learn how affordable subscription
plans to The Lutheran can be as low as $8.95 for 12 issue s a year. For
more information about subscriptions, call 800-328-4648 or email
You have the influence to increase your congregation members’
knowledge of the many ministries your ELCA congregation, synod and
churchwide office support. With a subscription to The Lutheran, we can
work together and work alongside each other as we do God’s work with
our hands.

The congregation, through the Strategic Planning Process, would inform that decision-making.
Grace Lutheran’s offer would provide ELC with around $90,000 after closing costs and
commissions. The bulk of the sale would come in another seven years. Finally, since ELC is the
lender of first position, we would take possession of the property should Grace Lutheran be
unable to pay their mortgage or the balloon payment.
A sale would require congregational approval. At this point, we do not have a vote scheduled. The
Council asks that you pray on this important decision. Look for more information in the weeks
ahead. Please contact me with any questions or comments.
Peace Be With You,
Paul Witzel, Congregation President

Annie’s Community Kitchen Thanksgiving
Report
225 pounds of turkey - 4 spiral hams -100 pounds of
potatoes, mashed - many hotel pans of veggies -
many large pans of salad- 80 pumpkin and apple pies
AND 70 Volunteers!
This is what it takes to serve 240 plates of turkey
dinner at our kitchen. Besides serving all of these peo-
ple at the church, we sent 200 meals to tent city in Bal-
lard. A big THANK YOU to Larry Ringstad for driving
the meals to tent city in Ballard. They just could not be-
lieve all that food when they saw it.
Our volunteers come from many places but that night we had some special ones. We had
invited local politicians to come and see and help. Six politicians showed up and helped
and were excited about what they saw.
Many thanks to all who contributed money for turkeys on the Sunday before Thanksgiving,
to all who came and helped prepare the food and to the Kamiak High School Students who
came and provided lovely music an strings and piano. - Annie Fortnum
Annie’s Kitchen News
Volunteers at Annie's Kitchen hosted "free pictures with Santa" on Wednesday, December 16th at ELC during dinner. Then they offered pictures at in partnership with West Lynnwood QFC on Saturday, December 19th. Around 100 photos were taken and distributed between the two events and smiles brought to more than 100 faces. It was a great outreach and community networking effort. Thanks so much to everyone that made these two events so much fun and successful!

Learning Center News
As I reflect over the past year, I wonder if I
took the time to practice these words in the
Bible. I look at my calendar and see all my
appointments, meetings, and
parties and wonder if I connected with my
loved ones and friends on a personal level
and shared my love for Jesus with them. Did
I tell them my faith stories and how God
protected me and gave me courage to face
my difficulties?
Thanks be to God that He can take our
imperfections and still use them for His glory
and purpose! He is a God of second, third,
etc. chances and through His mercy and
grace we can try again to be the channel of
love that only God can give to us.
The annual Christmas family potluck and
program was well attended and thanks to
Robert Lee, Santa again came to the Learning
Center party with lots of toys and many
smiles. A special thank you to Pastor Tim,
Barbara Elias, Laurie Gerlach and all the staff
who helped set-up, and clean-up after the
party.
The Learning Center is beginning the New
Year with a new director, Lauren Leiker. She
will introduce herself in the February
newsletter.
The Learning Center Staff want to thank the
Board for their generous Christmas bonuses.
We also want to thank Marilyn Dauer for a
breast pump and Bonnie Clark for a cash
donation.
Donations of Kleenex, kitchen garbage bags,
large non-latex gloves, 5 oz. paper cups and
batteries are always welcome.
As we look toward the New Year, let’s
remember the words from Jeremiah 29:11:
“For surely I know the plans I have for you,
says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not
for harm, to give you a future with hope.”
Mary Sheldahl, Program Supervisor
Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is
one! You shall love the Lord your God with
all your heart, with all your soul, and with all
your strength. And these words which I
command you today shall be in your heart.
You shall teach them diligently to your
children, and shall talk of them when you sit
in your house, when you walk by the way,
when you lie down, and when you rise up.

Treasurer’s Report – Offerings and other
income for November exceeded expenses.
When looking at what was budgeted, our
deficit is around $11,000. Your continued
generosity will allow us to lower this amount.

International. He added detail and answered
questions around Grace Lutheran’s offer for
the 9th

Pastor Tim’s Report
Learning Center Director-The search/hire
team is pleased to announce that we have
found our new Learning Center Director. Her
name is Lauren Leiker. She is highly
qualified, has all the requirements needed
for the position, tons of experience directing
larger size programs, and was looking for a
smaller faith based program. The search/
hire team is confident she will be the perfect
fit. Amelia will be offering her time for a few
days to help Lauren transition and answer
any questions she may have. Lauren's official
start date is January 4th.
Advent Fair-We had a successful Advent fair
at the end of December. There was yule log
making, ornament crafting, and cookie
decorating. A big thanks to all of those who
helped support this.
Adult Class-We will be offering an adult
education class in the last 3 weeks of
January, geared more for our newer
members, but open to all. It will be on
Wednesday evenings 7pm - 8:30pm, and
focus on Lutheran theology.
Thanksgiving Service-We held a
Thanksgiving eve service that was not well
attended. We had about 12 people attend,
including musical leadership and Pastors. It
may possibly be that people were just
traveling the night before, or this may be a
service that has lost energy and interest.
First Call Theological Education Retreat-I
attended my second first call retreat. It was
at Seabeck conference center. All the
Bishops from Region 1 were in attendance. It
was a quality retreat that I found supportive
and valuable. The focus topic of the retreat
was transforming conflict in churches.
