17 September 2011 IB H2 English B Period 8 Mrs. Mirecka Topic: What career will I pursue and why Life has its challenge. When we are in high school, we have many dreams in

what we want to be when we grow up. When the last year of high school arrives,

that’s when the students have already determined what career they will prefer...but

some, like me, have not decided yet. I have talked with my father, my uncle, and my

cousin who have all studied political science. I used to believe that before going to

university, I had to resolve what kind of political science I would study. However,

after the conversation with my family, I have realized that I was wrong and that it was

much easier than what I expected. In the first year I will be studying general courses

that will later define me what kind of political science studies I would select.

I chose political science because according to my behavior I am precise and

persistent. I always try my best effort to make the work look superior both in quality

and quantity.

Taman Kencana Permai 2 SE 12 Indonesia, Jakarta Professor John Annette Richmond The American International University In London Kensington High Street England, Londond September 5, 2011 Dear Mr. Annette, My name is Martin Avalos and I am a senior student from Jakarta International School. I am interested in studying in Richmond University because I have found out that it contains BA political science which is a career that I am pursuing. However, I have some questions that I would like to ask you. In my years in high school, I have taken IB H2 English B, IB S2 History, and IB S Environment System. I have worked in service activities such as Saturday school, where I teach English to Indonesian children. Also, I created my own chess club, where I teach the high school students. I won two service awards and I passed a test in order to qualify to the wind ensemble, which is the highest class of music in my school. My question is that based on the course that I have taken, do you think I have to take the summer course for admission to your university? If its yes, How long would it last? I am looking forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Martin Avalos

Article: Should students study at universities in their own country or abroad By Martin Avalos September 30 2011

12th grade is the final year before university. Everybody is happy that it is the last year of college. However, there are some aims students must complete, which it to apply for universities. Some have chosen which university they will study and already know what career they will pursue, while others are not sure of the career they will choose and the university they will go. One decision students must make is whether they want to study in their own country or abroad. There is mayor difference between studying outside and inside the home country. Soya told me that an advantage to study abroad is that you get to have more opportunities of attaining a job after you graduate because there is a need for people who are young and have studied in international schools rather than just their own country. In addition, people who study abroad learn more than just their own national language. An example is like Soya told me that the reason she went to the United States was because she believe it was a place full of opportunities were she would also learn English. Soya also stated that in the U.S, she made new friends who were international and as the years passed, she began to adapt to the new environment. Although she had previously lived in Guam, which is under control by the US, and she did went to Washington when she was in sixth grade. A disadvantage can come if the student can neither adapt to the customs of the foreign country or if they chose a university that does not contain their course or if they do not choose a course that they really enjoy. An example is based on Soya, who comments that when she arrived in the university, she was afraid that she would not make any new friends nor improve her English. Another drawback she states, is that although going to the US provided her new friends and better opportunities in the future, it has caused her a to forget some of her Japanese characters and it makes her a bit difficult when she visits her home country, Japan, on the summers and winters.

A solution for this drawback is to adapt to the place in which at first it will be hard, but once the months pass you will start adjusting to the countries way of life and you eventually become part of the new society. However, a failure to adjust to the country will lead to discomfort and to not be accepted by the society. An example based on Soya’s experience is that in her first years, she had difficult in catching up with her reading assignments in English; that she would sometimes skip some sentences form her readings. However, she in the end she got used to the way of lifestyle in America. Another important task is to know which course you really enjoy and you are good at. This will help you to determine a career that you will be with and you will enjoy working the type of career you choose based on your strongest course. However, if you choose a course that is known in the world (ex. engineering), but you do not like it, then it is not worth it, because the person will feel uncomfortable and stressed. Remember, that a career is something that you will work at for the rest of your life. Finally, the person should know the university he/she is choosing. It is a big advantage to study overseas, but you have to know which universities contain the course that you are trying to pursue. Studying in your home country has its advantage and disadvantage. Although Soya has lived as short time in Japan, she believes that the advantage is that since you know your country’s lifestyle, customs, and food habits, it helps you to be able to live comfortably. Also, since you know your family members, they can help you at any time. The only disadvantage is that the person could have less experience about the world. In conclusion, it depends how we behave and view the universities in either our own national country or abroad. Although both have their advantages and disadvantage, on important thing is that they both provide good education. I believe that if you ever get the chance to be accepted in an international university then you should take that opportunity for a better future in life. In the end national or international educations are the key for success.
