Why Fire Engines?• I chose to make my Literacy Play Center based on the

theme of fire engines and fire fighters because the children were part of a fire prevention week.

• When talking to the children they seemed really interested in what fire fighters do and the equipment they use.

The children practiced book handling whilein this center. They looked at the pictures, pretended to read, used the words to write on the incident reports, as maps andas directions for what to do in the center.

The children all worked together to put out fires, they placed the fires on different objects around the center. They also used the fire hydrants to get the water supply.

Implications for Instruction

• Literacy centers help create a fun engaging way for children to be immersed in literacy instruction.

• Based on what I observed these literacy centers help develop children’s reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
