Simple, Savvy Steps to Save Your Sanity…and Cents

1. Make a list & budget, and follow it (OK, TRY) Shopping is fun, but overspending? Not so much. Scan the ads, do research online and know what you want (and what you can afford). That way, when faced with multitudes of “good deals,” you’ll know what to do. Paying with cash is a good idea, too; just keep it safe.

3. Plan your trip Seasoned shoppers scout stores a day or two ahead of Black Friday to learn or refresh themselves with the layout and the locations of items. Knowing the mall layout is also key.

5. Partner upWhether it’s a spouse, a BFF or mature-enough kiddo, a partner can be your voice of reason, your motivator and, yes, a place holder in line (while you’re off scoring more deals…).

2. Stay hydratedWinter air is dry, heated buildings

are even drier and add to that the fact that you’ll probably be

conducting something very close to a workout. So bring a water bottle or two and some snacks and stay on top of your game.

4. Stay connectedBring a cell phone and a charger. Retailers might offer real-time promotions, and you can stay on top of the latest deals that way. Plus, plan as you may, you’ll probably need to call home at some time to ask if Uncle Josh or Aunt Jessi need Dbacks tees.

6. Get your Zen onBlack Friday at any mall in America will be crowded, full of lines and parking may be perplexing. Remember to be patient, even if no one else is, and go easy on retail staff. Yes, they’re getting paid, but they’re giving up their long weekend, too. Most of all, have fun!

The Salvation Army Angel Tree & Gift Wrapping ProgramBe an “angel” to a child in need, now through Dec. 22 in Sears Court. The Salvation Army, KTVK-TV 3 and Chandler Fashion Center are sponsoring this well loved program that lets participants choose a tag from the Angel Tree and purchase the item(s) a child has requested. The tags include the child’s first name, age, gender, clothing size and toy preference, so all you have to do is enjoy your shopping experience! Bring the unwrapped gifts you’ve purchased back to the Angel Tree booth by Dec. 22 and the Salvation Army will deliver them to grateful youngsters. Last year, Macerich shopping centers in Arizona helped grant the wishes of 76,633, totaling $1.1 million in toys and gifts.

In addition, now through Dec. 24 in the lower level of the mall next to Sears, the folks at the Salvation Army Gift Wrapping Station will cheerfully pretty up your package for a pittance. Customers must provide boxes. Suggested donations are $3 for a small package, $5 for a medium one and $7 for a large one, and best of all, proceeds benefit the Salvation Army.

Chandler Fire Department Holiday Toy Drive – 2 to 8 p.m., Dec. 8 in the porte cochere near Kona GrillMake your kid’s year by snagging them a ride on a Chandler fire truck around the mall!
