Living Waters

As your interim pastor, the rest of the time here is up from here for me. My very first day in the office I had a significant headache. Now my deep dark secret: I only get head-aches when I don't drink enough water. Drink water- no headaches: such a very diffi-cult basic concept to get and remember right? Years ago, while in an administrative double masters degree program, various professors would emphasize that we will all be more effective leaders if we kept learning about the culture and emergent patterns in the life of the various groups within your organization. At the heart and core of leadership is the challenge and blessing of relearning how to be attuned to the basics of mission. Why are we here? Who is being served? What are the current best resources available to us? How can we continuously evolve and adapt? In my personal life the basics are simple: live right, eat right, exercise, pray, meditate, play, read widely, cultivate friendships, practice kindness, be the peace grace-fully gifted to us all by God, ceaselessly seek justice for all, al-ways be myself by being inquisitive with oth-ers, get up on the right side of the bed, AND

drink enough water. Simple! Then life happens. We are all indi-vidually and collectively challenged to recall and practice living in a way reflecting our deepest wisdom and sense of mission in life. For all churches there are basics we all need to be cultivating: remembering it's not all about ME. It's all about learning and re-learning to inclusively live faithfully together in a manner informed by the teaching and example of Jesus the Christ. Jesus offered up living waters refreshing and renewing all per-sons so that they (we) can be fully, respon-sively, creatively, and lovingly alive in a way mattering to God and the future of all life on this interconnected planet. Living waters. Drink often. Drink deeply

Fewer headaches for all!! I am blessed to be here as your interim pastor. I look forward to getting to know you all. Peace. Pastor Curt

MODERATOR Curt Scott

We’ve come to a point where the lines no longer add up… I teach where those lines came from and who drew them. We know more than any previous generation about Jesus and his followers. Those who know this find mod-ern Christians disturbing. The truth about Jesus and Christian history is as jarring as it is enlightening. But brace yourselves. It’s here. Pastor Curt preached from sacred texts that arrogant men of the Reformation cut from the Bible 500 years ago. Wisdom conflicted with their misogyny. Luther did it; the same man who called the Letter of James an “Epistle of Straw” because the words of Je-sus’ brother contradicted a belief he was selling: his. Truth is coming. We stand poised to be the first generation to know and follow the teachings of the living Jesus Christ since 70 AD. Things didn’t turn out so well for them. Nonetheless, the task is ours. It starts with Shalom.

Peace, CJS

An extract from Tangled Webs Sermon We’re surrounded by tangled webs of belief about Jesus; religions and tribes and clubs ad-amant that they’re Jesus’ bffs or spokesper-sons while seemingly knowing nothing what-soever about the life and teachings of the man, let alone how Jesus’ words and inten-tions have been manipulated over the last 1600 years. I have spent most of my adult life trying to figure out how the original advocate for tran-scendence, for developing a conscience as re-sistance to the crushing maw of Empire, be-came the imaginary figurehead for every bru-tal Western Empire since the late 4th Century. How did we get from Jesus and his followers spreading the principle “love thy neighbor” to Catholics and Lutherans - the big dogs of Chris-tianity 1800 years later -- forcing the world to invent the word genocide because of what they did to their neighbors? … The short answer is brutal, and simple. Peo-ple who called themselves Christians stopped using the teachings of Jesus as the basis of their religion. It started in the 1st Century. Christianity slowly and sometimes not so slow-ly became about something else then kept becoming about something else until we ar-rive here, today, with Christians trying to re-place our elected government with fascist, theocratic dictatorship.

October 2018 Judi Cates, BOT

without knowing the expected income. That is why it is important to take time to assess what you are able to give to the Church in the form of a Pledge. Like any household we are planners of the needs of the church. The BOT are the “stewards” of these dollars and we take the time to thoughtfully use these dollars in a manner that has been discussed and analyzed before spending. May I be so bold to “ASK” what you can give this Stewardship season? Is it a one time gift? Is it a year long pledge? Is it an increase from last year? Is it time to prayerfully spend time to

look at what you are able to give? Future Giving to Endowment? To “Be the Church” in our community is a large commitment to “ASK” our congregants. It is also a difficult task to “ASK” our congre-gants for financial support. Please take some time and prayerfully look at what you are able to give financially in your Pledge for 2019. Matthew 7:7–8 7 "Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. 8 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened. Peace and God’s Grace

Puzzles have always challenged me. I am not that good with picture puzzles nor the effort it takes me to sit and put 1000 pieces togeth-er. Now the HOWEVER , However I love to figure out the puzzles that present us on a daily basis. As a Board Member I am only one person on this team of puzzle solvers! The BOT look at our Buildings and Grounds puz-zles; we look at our role as stewards of this great church and the church family. We strive to see that our care sustains and re-plenishes the needs of the church. Stewardship is an important part of our role. Pledge cards were given out in Septem-ber and we are asking that they be returned on October 21st during Service. Last year we had 61 folks “Pledge” and along with dona-tions and gifts our needs are greater than our offering. We look to our family and friends to help sustain the mission of the church in our Community. We ask that you search you heart as to what you might be able to give. It is said that people will give more in a specific need such as a Memorial Tree/Bench when needed; loose change offering for Children's Books or Labyrinth. We now need to ask for you to offer gifts to support the General Operating Funds of the Church. We are a creative, giving, caring community of people that support the needs of our church efforts in the community and now we as the Board of Trustee’s ask for pledges to support the 2019 Budget. Did you make a Pledge in 2018? I know personally it is very hard to create a Budget

Sunday, October 7th 6:30 PM - Church Sanctuary Mission Blue, an Emmy

award winning documentary, highlights leg-endary oceanographer, marine biologist, en-vironmentalist and National Geographic Ex-plorer-in-Residence Sylvia Earle. The film follows Dr. Earle on her global quest to pro-tect our ocean—and the extraordinary ma-rine life that call them home—from the pow-erful forces of pollution, overfishing, and cli-mate change. For generations, we have believed that the ocean is too big to fail—but that’s no longer true. And having logged more than 7000 hours underwater, Dr. Earle is uniquely posi-tioned to help us understand why. As a wit-ness to oceanic and marine life change over the past 60 years, Sylvia is a steadfast warri-or, leading the charge to restore the ocean to health before it’s too late. And Mission Blue is her warning call. View the film’s stunning photography on the big screen and join us in a brief discussion following the film about the impact that the environment’s health has on us. Quinn Underwood, Director of Charlotte Area Re-cycling Authority, will be leading the discussion.

A THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Diversity is the magic. It is the first manifesta-tion, the first beginning of the differentiation of a thing and of simple identity. The greater the diversity, the greater the perfection. Thomas Berry

Music Notes Ramona Kime, Director of Music

I like to make a joyful noise (even if it's just for me). But I sound better in a group, a BIG group. Come join us: we like warm bodies! Dottie Moore You get to sing the songs over and over and over…. The performance is actually not as fun as the practices, where you make a mistake and can

ask for a 'do over'. Choir is a collection of people who generally love to work together for the suc-cess of the whole. And the music director is always on time, very dedicated to her craft, and fo-cused on the success of the group. I also love the fellowship and the “sacred sugar” after rehearsal. --Amy Krizek I've sung in choirs since I was 10 years old and now, 62 years later, I am still enjoying the fun and camaraderie of such nice people with the same love of music. If God gives you the gift of music, use it to his glory! You don't have to have a soloist's voice; many voices make joyful noise. Pam Rinckey I dread the thought of what I would have become without choirs, sacred music and the transcend-ent love required to perform as a group. To my mind, the synergy of ordinary people immersed in sacred music is as close to God as one can be while still breathing. --Curt Scott I love music. Years ago, I was told by my pastor that when you sing in church choir, you were wor-shipping twice. I have to have music. --Diane Hudson I joined our church choir because I grew up singing in my hometown choir for years. I missed sing-ing all the beautiful music a choir offers in song to the congregation. There are many wonderful, caring people in our choir who made me feel welcome when I decided to join the choir, which put me at ease. Music is a passion and God-given gift to me, and I just love to sing!! --Bev Gardner For me, singing with a choir is the purest form of "make a joyful noise unto the Lord". Being part of our choir, accompanied by Ramona, is the most joyful part of my life. --Kathie Cook Where does one start in talking about the reasons I sing and play bells? I have been in both choirs for decades. The choirs bring harmony to my soul. The families of both choirs have kept me on an even track so many times. The love, kindness, caring, shown by each of these brothers and sisters, have gotten me through many difficult days and nights. I love this church and all who enter here. I enjoy singing and ringing and hope I am able to do so for decades to come.--Chris Reist

Last month I shared comments by bell choir mem-bers about why they enjoy playing in the bell choir. This month I’m sharing comments by members of the senior choir. It’s clear that being part of a music ensemble can affect people on a very deep level. Ramona

Most of the films shown at our monthly movie nights are housed there. There are also a number of other wonderful movies and documentaries in the library that we’ve decided not to show at church, either because of a hefty screening fee or, in a few cases, because the movie is rated R.

See the list below for the DVDs in the library at this time. If you borrow a DVD, be sure to sign the “check out” sheet. While there’s no deadline to return the DVDs, we’d like to know where they are in case someone else would like to borrow a particular DVD. Also, if you have DVDs of appropriate films that you would like to donate to the library, please see Ramona.

Commons 2018 Wrap Up

Wow, what a year it's been. We closed 2017 by making our space green, but 2018 was spent making it a destination. The benches and picnic tables were just the beginning, as this August we completed the labyrinth. After the ribbon cutting ceremony during Frontier Days, we enjoyed barbecue and hosted Brandon McCoy and the Michigan Mafia String Band to end the year on a high note. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped this project suc-ceed: the businesses and vendors who con-tributed their services and expertise, the generous members of the congregation and community who sponsored the work, and the volunteers who donated their time and talents to make it all a reality. This space demonstrates who we are as a church – a giving and welcoming congrega-tion that invites visitors to explore, relax, and reflect. We are taking a leadership role in our com-munity, and living up to our mission to reach out to anyone looking for fellowship and spiritual renewal. I can't wait for 2019! Matt Slot

Community Dinner: October 24th: Please Help!

Festival of Trees will be here before we know it. Please consider donating a tree. Several families could go in together to sponsor one. Maybe your place of work could do

one. All the money goes to Eaton Furniture and Clothing to pay for boots for their clients. It’s a wor-thy cause & so much fun!

Our Giving Tree For October we are col-lecting towels and washcloths. Gently used are just fine. Harvest Feast Harvest Feast is Oct 21. Please save this date for a delicious meal. I will have my frosted sugar cookies available for a $5 donation toward the pur-chase of the turkeys. sheets for workers and desserts. Please help if you can. Todd Rockhill of Housing Services came and talked with Outreach about Housing Services of Michigan here in Charlotte. There is such a need for housing for many of the residents in Eaton County. There is so much that this agency does to help with homelessness and to help prevent it. After he left we voted to give them a $1000 from our non-budgeted monies.

Last month we voted to give $200

worth of towels and washcloths to EFCC. We were able to purchase 32 sets. We also voted to give SIREN/Eaton $200 worth of diapers and feminine hy-giene products and $100 to Church World Service to help them with post-age.

We have set up dates for brown bags and white bags. Brown bags are for non-perishable food items. These bags will be passed out Nov.11 and are to be returned Nov 18. White bags are for personal care products. They will be passed out Dec. 9 and are to be re-turned Dec. 16.

The winter coat project will once again be championed by Bill and Carol Yerkes. They expect to start this Sept. 30. Watch the bulletin for information on this project.

Fall Multi-Cultural Series

presented by

The “Church as Educator” group

Do you like gadgets? Would you like to learn a new skill (it keeps the mind sharp)? The Sound Board team is looking for new teammates. They promise it is simple to learn and they will give all the training needed for success. THERE ARE WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS AND TRAINING! If you can help out, even if only once and awhile, please see Terry Davis, Eric Cran-dall, or Matt Slot. Your help would be greatly appreciated by the whole congregation. The CD’s are giv-en to those who cannot come to service and to those who like to revisit the mes-sage.

Join us as three individuals talk with us about their native country: how people live and work, what living conditions are like, about their social connections with family and the community, about religious practices, etc. We will have a potluck supper at 6:00, fea-turing an entrée from the highlighted coun-try. Please bring a dish to pass. If you like a culinary challenge, find a recipe for a dish from the highlighted country! Then the presentation will begin at 7:00 in the sanctuary, with plenty of time to ask questions. Sunday, October 14—Nataliya Malaydakh, from Ukraine (student at Olivet College) Sunday, October 28—Thuc Nguyen, from Vietnam (one of our own!) Sunday, November 11—Maxwell Nkansah, from Ghana (new pastor at the Olivet Congre-gational Church)

Please join us and bring your friends. This is sure to be a very

interesting series!

Unearth those Hidden

Treasures There has not been a strong response to this request, so as time

nears I am in hopes that you will take some time to go through old jewelry or unused items that others may really appreciate.

Time is running short to donate so please look in that drawer in the bedroom and see what you might like to donate.

Diamonds, ruby’s and pearls are also gratefully accepted!

Please remember the used jewelry sale at the church bazaar in November. Quality costume jewelry has been a very success-ful part of the bazaar and we need your help to continue this tradition. To donate jewelry that you no longer use or want, you may contact me at 543-0049 or you may give pieces to me at the church. Thank you, Lola Wilson
