Pleading sorry both got out of the situation bygiving away their watches, shoes and coat. Oncoming out Jaggu thrashed Jhagru, Because of youI have lost my expensive watch and coat, you fool. Iwill kill you.

But boss, how did I know that this stupiddonkey will be so smart, Jhagru replied.

Next day, Jhagru and Jaggu saw Dunku carryingeatables home in great quantity.

Next day, Dunku got his salary. It was midnightand the road was isolated. Suddenly, 2shadows came and stood in front of him.

Hand over to me whatever you have, pointing

out their revolver towards him, the shadowssaid.Look, I know who you both are. It would be

THERE WAS a house that looked monotonousstanding at a place for very long. It felt likegoing for roaming somewhere. It told this to

the sparrow living in it. The bird laughed. It asked the lizard living in a crevice. The lizard

advised, If you feel so, go ahead. But come backbefore night falls.

The house rose like wind and flew off. It wentaround the world.

Ah ... ha, the world is so beautiful, it thought.Like a fool I used to keep standing at a place. I didnot enjoy life till now living with Ramu, his wife, 2

children and mother. Now I will not return. I willroam like this and enjoy life. Man has made me aslave of his.

it was advancing ahead. It found many houses onthe way. They stopped it and asked, What is thematter, after all? Why are you running like thatleaving such good people? God knows what kind

of people next do you meet in life.I am not a fool like you, the house said. I

have got my senses back. I want to live life. Manmakes us a fool. He himself sings and dancesaround but keeps us tied to a place.

Man does not fool us. He loves us, otherhouses explained him. You have roamed a lot.Now go back. He will be happy to see you. He willcelebrate. He will decorate you with lamps and willpaint you.

Sorry, you fools, and he ran away from them.It finally stopped at one place as it was tired. It

took shelter in a lonely place.

Such a long journey had broken it but it did notwant to return. He stayed put there itself, far awayfrom man.

Slowly, the doors and windows of the housebecame loose. Coat of paint too started coming out.It was covered with dust from top to bottom.Termites and ants made it their home.

The house started crumbling. It thought,

What bad days have come. I was so beautiful andbig. My walls used to shine. My verandah used to lookpretty with flowers. Ramus wife used to worship mein morning and evening by lighting lamp. It is notgood to pick up fight with man. He knew my worth. That is why it got me repaired of small breakages. Willhe recognise me now?

The house returned again. Reaching its place hesaw, Ramu had already placed another small andbeautiful house in its place. The new house wassmelling beautifully of flowers. It was as if bathingin moonlight and banana leaf caressing it.

A lizard clinging to its wall said, You fool, youhave delayed a lot in coming. You saw how I cling

here. Our good is in being with man and not in goingaway.

The house had no words. It just crumbled downslowly. 14 Champak

PINTOO AND Sonu lived in the same residentialblock. Pintoo's father was a rich businessman, whereas Sonu's father was rickshawpuller. Pintoo

used to get handsome pocket-money but Sonu used toget 1 or 2 odd rupees, only as pocket-money.Both of them studied in the same school. Pintoo

spent lot of money on his friends to entertain them.He was haughty as well. He was convinced thatthat he was from a rich family and he could doanything. His behaviour with his teachers was also

not good.Sonu, who was from a poor family was well-behaved and innocent. He obeyed all his teachers. He was always ready to help when he was askedfor a help. Everybody loved him for his goodnature.

This made Pintoo highly jealous of Sonu. He

wondered why everybody loved a son ofrickshawpuller and not him though he was from a richfamily.

One day, Pintoo went out for picnic with his

Pintoo was unconscious. Sonu was kind-heartedand he started crying.

The crowd gathered and Pintoo was taken to thehospital.

When Pintoo came to his senses, he was told that

his saviour was none other than Sonu. His eyes filledwith tears. He apologised to Sonu for his unfriendlybehaviour.

The Doctor said, My son, everybody on the earthis equal. Colour does not matter. One should knowhow to be helpful.

Pintoo's parents hugged Sonu. Even Pintoo was

TWO CURTAINS were hanging on the door ofa house. One of them was white in colourwith black stripes. It was a simple one. The

other one was colourful and very proud of itself. Itteased the white one everytime.

One day, Chintoo, son of the house owner waseating an ice-cream. Suddenly, his leg slipped andhe fell on the white curtain. The curtain tookcontrol of him.

The boy did not get hurt but the ice-cream fellon the curtain. It got stained.

The proud curtain teased him, You were veryproud of your white colour. Now go and show this

dirty face of yours to everyone.White curtain said, What have I spoilt of you

that you keep teasing me like this. I don't feel badthat I have been stained but am happy that Ihave been able to save someone from gettinghurt.

In the meantime Chintoo's mother came by. Sheconsoled Chintoo.

Chintoo's father said, The curtain has gotstained. It has to be washed.

Mother brought down the curtain and put it forwash in the washing machine.

After some time the curtain came out clean and

    sparkling.

The proud curtain again said, After wash youdon't have your earlier shine which I have. Youalso have creases. You are looking like a squeezedsugarcane.

The white curtain did not want to quarrel, so it

kept quiet. From now on whenever the whitecurtain got slightest of stain, it was immediatelywashed. This kept it sparkling white always.

On the other hand because the stains oncolourful curtain were not visible therefore it wasnot washed once also. So it was getting dirty overthe time.

The colourful cloth teased the white curtain allthe time.

After some days Chintoo's father got a puppy inthe house. He was named Sheroo. He was white inFebruary (First) 2010 19

colour and had black spots.Sheroo and the white curtain became friends.

The proud colourful curtain was jealous seeingthem.

One day, white curtain said to Sheroo, Tell mesomething about you, Sheroo.

Sheroo said, I was born in the house of the bossof Chintoo's father. My mother stays in their house. My father lives in the neighbour Sharma Uncleshouse. We were 3 brothers born. It was not possible20 Champak

for all of us to stay in one house. So we were allsent to different houses.

Chintoos father liked me.Sheroo asked the curtain, You too tell me about

yourself. The curtain said, My story is quite similar to

yours. I have been woven by joining so manythreads. These black stripes have been drawn onme through machines. Then I came to the shopalong with my brothers.

Chintoo's father bought me and hung me on

the door.Pointing towards the proud curtain Sheroo said,

Then you and this colourful curtain are brothers. But he teases you. Why don't you say anything tohim?

White curtain said, I don't want to be like him.The proud curtain was listening to them.He had decided that he would teach Sheroo a

    lesson.

One day, Sheroo was crossing the door running. The proud curtain came in the way and the dogfell. Sheroo got wild.

He took a leap and tore the curtain apart withhis sharp teeth.Chintoo saw and shouted, Mummy, papa, look,

Sheroo has torn the curtain.Father said, Does not matter. It has gone quite

old and dirty. It was hanging absurdly. Now it can be used as a mopper, and mother

tore it into 4 pieces.Looking at the white curtain father said,

Tomorrow we will go and buy a similar whitecurtain so that both look alike. February (First) 2010 21

Wow! What lovely juicy rasgullas. What if I getto eat them for free, standing in front of the shop, wicked fox thought.

The shop was crowded. Chamcham was findingit difficult to handle them.

Chalu kept thinking for some time. Thenhe digged into his pocket. There were 200

rupees. They will be of use if I get caught, otherwise I

will eat them for free, humming in his heart thefox entered Chamchams shop.

What do you want? Or have you just come for

no reason? giving him a cold look, Chamchamsaid. He knew him very well.Oh no, Chamcham, I have come to take 2 kg

rasgullas. Weigh and pack them for me.Do you have money? No debts.Yes, yes I have, showing him 2 notes of 100

    rupees each the fox said.

Good, good, take them from the helper,Chamcham became humble seeing money in thefoxs hand. Calling out the helper he ordered him topack 2 kg rasgullas and himself became busy intalking to other customers.

Chalu smartly took the packed rasgullas andslipped off without paying money to the helper.

Helper thought that Chalu must have paid to themaster.

But how could he again go to Chamchamsshop. He was sure that if Chamcham saw him

Some days passed. When he could not resistanymore, he again reached Chamchams shop.He was very happy to see from far that someoneelse was sitting in place of Chamcham on his

shop. Someone with long and white beard andmoustache.

Probably, he is Chamchams father. I can nowhave rasgullas for free, and he digged into hispocket. Like always it had 200 rupees.

Pack 2 kg rasgullas for me, waving the 2 notesin the air, Chalu Fox asked Chamchams father,Has Chamcham gone out somewhere?

Yes, to his in-laws place, the old man repliedasking the helper to weigh rasgullas for him. Doyou know Chamcham?

Chamcham is my good friend.Chamchams father smiled. Then getting up

from his seat he went away somewhere.Chalu thought of not missing this moment.Taking the box from the helper he slipped offquickly from the shop. But as he walked out of theshop, a stick hit him hard on his back.

Chamchams father was standing with the stickbehind the shop. He shouted, You thief, going

Chalu Fox was standingdazed. He did not know what

to do in this situation. All the servants of the

He fell on Chamchams feet, pleadingforgiveness. He not only returned the rasgullas butcleared his earlier dues too. He was ashamed of his

They actually could see shining stones jumpingand dancing.

How strange is this? Ankur Sir, the scienceteacher wondered.

Probably sir, it is some ghost working. Neitherdo stones shine this way nor they dance like this, frightened driver said.

The children got scared at hearing him.Shut up, you are a fool. Who believes in ghosts.

We must find out this secret, Mayank Sir, whotaught Biology, said and started getting down from

the bus.Driver wanted to stop him but with the fear of

getting shouted at, he did not.Seeing the teacher getting down from the bus,

others too were encouraged. The 4 teachers and some courageous children

got down and walked towards the lake. Theycarried 2 torches.

In the light of the torch, when they reached thebanks of the lake, they were taken aback. Whatthey were thinking to be stones were actually frogsthat were jumping.

But how are these frogs shining? Ankur Sirwondered.I will tell you. These frogs have swallowed

glowworms, Mayank explained.Actually, the membrane of their stomach is

transparent. That is why they are shining.Children were listening carefully to their

teachers. They were surprised hearing the fact.If their teachers had not investigated, no

one would have known the secret of the shiningstones.

Really? Bittu said softly. Are you not happy? It is a great thing to be part

Come on quick Peelu Deer is having greatpain in his legs. He has hurt it. He cannotget up too, Hariyal replied.

Peelus leg was plastered. Dr Meow gave him 5days medicine and said, You cannot walk. Takerest at home and yes, one must always work out onthe advice of a right instructor. Now-a-days everylane has a teacher like Bitlu who do not knowanything except jumping around.

CHUCHU MOUSE thought, Exams are close.I have to prepare for them. Bony Cat keepstroubling me. I must think of some idea to

keep Bony away from by burrow. He thought deeply and hit upon a plan. He

installed a mirror on his main door which couldreflect the image of anyone who passed in and outfrom his door.

Bony came to Chuchus house everyday. Todaytoo she came at the same time. As she came toChuchus burrow, she saw herself in the mirror.

Chuchu was ready. As he saw Bony, he said,

You know Soni, Bony looks same as you. She mustbe just coming.

Bony heard this and stopped at the door tolisten to Chuchu carefully.

Copy Bony when she comes. Do as she does, understood? When Chuchu said, Bony looked intothe mirror. Soni of the mirror was looking at her

too.Bony got angry. How could a look-alike cat come

here. She could nottolerate. Bonymeowed. The cat in themirror meowed too.

As the mirror washer reflection, theimage was reflectingwhatever Bony wasdoing. Surprised Bonyleft the place.

    She could not

understand how shecould get rid of SoniCat.

Bony thought thatChuchu had broughtSoni for his protection.Who is interested in

She met Binny on the way. She stopped Bonyand asked, How are you, sister?

Bony had just faced a problem. She told Binnyeverything. These days cats are protecting rats.

Really? Binny said, First of all, it is notpossible that a cat guards a rat and secondly, even ifit is true, no cat can win over you.

But the truth is that a cat named Soni isguarding the rat. I have seen her with my eyes,Bony said.

Then you must fight with her. A tamed cat is

not very powerful. She will lose the fight, andBinny went away.

Bony too thought that domestic animals areweak as they forget fighting. And so they can beeasily won over.

Thinking this, Bony left for Chuchus house.Today, I will either throw her out or kill her.

She again saw her image in the mirror. Seeing

Soni she again meowed in anger, You wait, I willjust show you, and she leaped.

Bony banged into the mirror. The mirror brokeand hit her on the head. It started bleeding. Chuchushouted, Well done Soni, Bony has got hurt. Dontleave her.

A piece of mirror hit Bonys head. Blood ran

down to her eyes. She could not see properly. Shegroaned with pain. Now she thought it was betterto run away from there.

She fled. Since that day, she never came toChuchus place. But for safety Chuchu hadinstalled another mirror at the entrance of hisburrow. Maybe, she came back some time.

Many days passed. But Bony could notunderstand the secret of Soni.

She did not know that she was defeated by herown reflection.

As it was expected, Nattu Mouse slipped in thetub. Initially, he tried a lot to come out of the tub,

Neetu and Pintoo were too scared to find NattuMouse inside the bathtub. Their mother too wasnot around to help them.

The efforts of the bothers paid and theysucceeded in pulling out the string from thepetticoat.

Both the brothers held one of the ends of thestring firmly in their hands and lowered the otherend of the string in the bathtub. Nattu Mouse wasnow able to hold the end of the string.

Nattu Mouse began climbing the string. Hisbrothers also helped and finally Nattu was able tocome out of the bathtub.

Diamonds of crores of rupees have been lootedfrom my house by 3-4 masked gunmen, the callerinformed.

Inspector Chatur Singh asked his driver to take out

his vehicle and he started for Seth Gajraj's house withthe police team.

They saw that there was darkness around hishouse. There was no guard at the gate.

Inspector Chatur Singh pushed the door and wentinto the room and searching the light switch with thetorch, he switched on the light. The room lighted up.

To his shock, he saw Gajraj and his wife tied up toa chair. A cloth was stuffed in their mouths.Inspector Chatur Singh took out the cloth from

their mouth and untied them.Gajraj cried, I am finished. I am now a bankrupt.

They have taken away my diamonds worth crores ofrupees.Inspector took information from them about the

theft. We were sleeping when suddenly 2-3 masked

gunmen entered inside our room. They forced us toopen the treasury at gunpoint and took away

diamonds worth crores of rupees.Inspector asked Gajraj, Which direction did themasked men come from?

Pointing towards the rear window of the house,Gajraj said, Probably from there.

Where did they go?From where they came, Gajraj replied.

Inspector asked, When did they tie you? While going, they tied us to the chair and stuffed

cloth in our mouth, Gajraj informed.Don't you have guards? Inspector asked.

Both are on leave, Gajraj answered.Do you suspect anyone? No, no one, Gajraj replied.Walking up till the window, inspector examined

carefully. He could not find any clue which could beproof enough that someone had entered from thewindow.

They examined the room properly but could notfind anything.

By the time it was morning. Inspector ChaturSingh filed a report and asked for information

regarding the guard and the servant.Seth Gajraj replied, I do not know anything

about the 2. They had promised to return in2 days.

Chatur Singh was annoyed, You know that beforekeeping any servant or guard you must check thedetails about him thoroughly. Not only this, you mustinform the police station about them.

Both were simple and honest persons. That iswhy I did not pay much attention to these things. Infuture I will take care and inform the police stationbefore keeping any new servant.

Months passed but nothing was known about thetheft of the diamonds.Inspector Chatur Singh went to Gajraj and said tohim, You are arrested for getting a false reportregistered and misleading the police.

Seth Gajraj said, You cannot arrest me withoutproof.

Inspector said, We have the proof as well as thewarrant.

had occurred at all. I reached your house with thepolice team. That time you and your wife were tied tothe chair and your mouths were stuffed with cloth.

I had my doubts then itself. When your hands and

legs were tied and mouth stuffed with cloth, howcould you have rung up the police to inform? Thatmeans that the diamonds were not stolen.

Hearing the inspector, Seth Gajraj became nervousand his wife started crying with fear.

Inspector went on, In this plan of yours, your wifeand loyal servant Monu were with you. On detailed

examination of the matter I found out that you hadrecently got the diamonds insured.

In order to acquire the insurance money, youplanned the drama of this diamond theft.

First of all, you sent the guard on leave and thenby bribing your servant Monu you bought his loyalty.

One oclock at night you rang upthe police station. Then as per yourinstructions your servant tied you andyour wife up to the chair and stuffed

When I investigated the matter, Iunderstood what had conspired. That is why

I first went to the village and met Monu.I said to him, In order to save himself, Seth

Gajraj has named you to the police. According to him

his servant Monu has stolen the diamonds. Onhearing me he fell on my feet and told me everythinghonestly.

Inspector Chatur Singh arrested Seth Gajraj. Hiswife and servant Monu too were arrested for abetmentof the crime.
