VIRTU ARTS FESTIVAL - 16 YEARS STRONG As another incredible exhibition of the arts has come and gone in Wilcox Park, The
Chamber of Commerce would like to acknowledge the fabulous volunteers from the
community and from the Washington Trust Company, and the awesome committee who
makes this event happen each year. For 16 years Angie Smith has served on the Virtu
committee, and she has chaired this event for the last 11 years. She greets artists, oversees
booth set up, recruits and motivates volunteers and assists with tax collection. Angie
devotes over 20 hours to this event each Memorial Day weekend. Mike Benevides has
also served on the Virtu committee for 16 years. Mike secures tractors for the event,
repairs and secures trailers and golf carts for the event, personally picks up all of the is
equipment from various local residents who donate use of their equipment. His work starts
Thursday night before the show and he continues all weekend long helping artists unload,
erecting signage, and all sorts of physical labor throughout the event. On the Memorial
Day, when the rest of the committee is home recovering from the long weekend workout,
Mike still has to return tractors and trailers, a task that takes up half the day. He literally

HEADLINES WITH E.M.I.L.Y.
Jeff Lenihan and Kevin Roy, two of
Westerly’s most experienced lifeguards,
have just returned from Malibu California
where they were trained to use the EMILY
lifeguard robots. The new equipment will
be an additional tool in the arsenal of tools
used for beach safety. It will not be used
in every rescue instance, and will not
replace any lifeguard staff. Community
response to this life saving technology has
been terrific and the publicity coverage for
our community has been nationwide.
Three tv stations, National Public Radio
and a radio station from Boston and the
Hartford Courant have all done extensive
interviews about EMILY. Donations are
still being accepted. Look for EMILY at
the two Westerly Town beaches later this
month. Continued on page 3

FUSION Thank you Valenti Family of Auto
Dealerships, Gira! Florals and Events and
Smashing Photo Booth! Their generous
support allowed Fusion to be a tremendous
success! It was a win-win for everybody
involved. The Greater Mystic Chamber of
Commerce and Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck
Area Chamber of Commerce each profited by
$5,700. The fabulous artists in the mill had
their incredible works exposed to a larger
audience, as many people had never been to
that facility before. Sue Adam of Gira! Florals
and Events did an incredible job transforming
a garage into a New York style nightclub.
Every single detail of the environment was
cleverly and creatively displayed into a funky,
artsy theme that truly captured the spirit of this
eclectic arts celebration.

The live bodypainting was a popular
attraction as local artists Lisa Szaro, Millie
Donovan, Serena Bates and Finn Moran
worked alongside noted NY City
bodypainter Andy Golub. Each artists
created spectacular designs on the models,
using the human body as a canvas.
Several event patrons joined the fun,
shedding their shirts and getting their
bodies painted as well. Thanks to Fal
Hauser for henna tattoos, and to all of the
volunteers who donated their time with
this event. Thanks also to Eric Pivco of
the Velvet Mill for his unwavering support
and generosity in allowing this to be the
first major event to be hosted at that
location. Continued on page 3

The 14th
Annual Pawcatuck River Duck Race was held on
Saturday, April 28, 2012. The weather and the river
cooperated which provided us with a very successful duck
race! Thousands of spectators crowded downtown Westerly-
Pawcatuck to view the duck race and enjoy the fun activities
the event had to offer. This year, over 50 local schools and
non-profit agencies received over $56,000, collectively, from
their efforts in duck sponsorship certificate sales. Our Grand
Prize Winner of a trip for four to Walt Disney World was
Mary Mcrea of Pawcatuck, CT and in our Corporate Race
Aruba Rentals won. We are proud and pleased to have the
opportunity to produce this effective community fundraiser
each year. Thank you to all the many volunteers and
committee members that helped put together this year’s
successful Duck Race! Rudi Hauser Jr. and Andy Schilke
thank you for all your hard work!

Once E.M.I.L.Y. is here, lifeguards will
spend a lot more time training and getting
familiar with the equipment and how it can
best be put to use in our waters. With over
35 lifeguards working this summer, it could
take quite some time to get the entire crew
thoroughly familiar with this new
technology. The 2012 season will likely be
used solely for lifeguard training purposes
and for potential after-hours rescues by
emergency response personnel.
Facade Program Awards
$1,500 Three grants of $500 have been approved
by The Chamber’s Façade Improvement
Committee. Melissa Ashley Bridal will
receive funds to support replacing a
storefront window that suffered an 8 foot
long crack during an act of random
vandalism. The crack has been taped for
several months as the business tried to gain
assistance from the landlord to no avail.
The Twisted Vine, a new piano bar/lounge
that is opening in downtown soon, received
approval for $500 towards window repair
and $500 towards a new door.
There is still $5,500 left to award for façade
improvements. Committee members have
met with a variety of business owners
downtown to encourage them to take
advantage of this one-time opportunity to
secure funds to help make improvements to
awnings, doors/windows, or for exterior
painting. July 6 is the next application
deadline. For more information, contact
Lisa Konicki.

Trustee donates coin bank
collection to Chelsea Groton
George W. Strouse, Trustee and retired CFO
of Chelsea Groton Bank, donated his
collection of antique “auxiliary” coin banks to
the company where he started his banking
career in 1967. Mr. Strouse donated the coin
banks, some of which date back to the early
1900’s, “to make a classic piece of
Connecticut banking history available to the
community.” Mr. Strouse went on to say that
coin banks were first introduced in the
1800’s. The bank provided depositors with a
numbered coin bank at no charge. The
number was then recorded on the customer’s
account record. Customers had to bring the
coin bank into the bank for the teller to unlock
it and to deposit the money into their account.
BAUERFINANCIAL, Inc., America’s leading
bank rating and research firm, has named
Chelsea Groton a 5-Star Superior financial
institution- the firm’s highest rating. The 5-
Star superior rating is bestowed to financial
institutions which demonstrate the highest
level of strength and performance. In fact,
Chelsea Groton Bank has earned this 5-Star
Superior rating for the last 71 consecutive
quarters. That gives Chelsea Groton the added
distinction of “Exceptional Performance
Bank”, a designation reserved for those
institutions that have earned and retained the
5-Star Superior rating for ten straight years.

RI FAST FERRY ADDS A NEW
VESSEL TO EXPAND FERRY
SERVICE TO MARTHA’S
VINEYARD & SIGHTSEEING
CRUISES ON NARRAGANSETT
BAY THIS SUMMER
The Rhode Island Fast Ferry announced that
it will add a newly constructed $6 million
dollar state-of-the art fast ferry, the “Ava
Pearl” to its Martha's Vineyard route. The
vessel will be put into service later next
month. President Charles A. Donadio Jr. said
"We will be celebrating our tenth season, and
all our passengers will truly be benefiting
from our success." The new 150-passenger
ferry “Ava Pearl” will replace the current
vessel 400 passenger Millennium. The Ava
Pearl has been designed to meet the needs of
the service route and its passengers; the ferry
will be lighter and driven by propellers to
make this vessel much more fuel efficient.
The new ferry features an “S” bow shape, a
large dynamic active trim-tab ride-control
system and higher freeboard which will give
the ferry the latest in seakeeping technology
to enhance passenger comfort. The interior
cabin will be much like business-class service
with more leg room, luxurious Beurteaux
seating, along with a snack bar, two
restrooms, and five flat-screen TV monitors.
There is a separate luggage area forward and
rear as well as space for bicycles on the aft
deck. Outdoor seating will be provided on
the aft and forward decks with the upper deck
featuring protected outdoor seating. The 400-
passenger Millennium will be put into full-
time sightseeing which will expand the

CHARTER OAK ANNUAL
MEETING BOASTS
ACHIEVEMENTS Charter Oak Federal Credit Union marked the
strongest year in its history during 2011, with
net income reaching a record $8.4 million,
assets exceeding $700 million and mortgage
lending earning a top ranking for the second
consecutive year. The institution had
earnings growing from $4.9 million in 2010
to $8.4 million in 2011 and overall capital
reaching $69.7 million. Charter Oak’s
capital-to-assets ratio, a key indicator of
overall strength, was nearly 10 percent, well
above regulatory requirements. Deposits
surged 7.1 percent to $585 million in 2011,
and assets rose 7.3 percent to $702 million –
a new record. Charter Oak also was ranked
number one in the number of mortgage
transactions during 2011 and received a top
five-star rating from a leading bank and credit
union rating agency. In addition, Charter Oak
distributed $234,000 to over 200 community
organizations across eastern Connecticut. www.CharterOak.org.
Two new life saving instruments are
currently available for patient care in both the
Intensive Care Unit and Emergency
Department, thanks to the generous donations
from our community to the Westerly
Hospital Auxiliary’s Lights of Love campaign this past winter. Called
glidescopes, or video laryngoscopes, these
instruments incorporate a high resolution
digital camera, connected by a video cable to
a high resolution LCD monitor. Glidescopes
are most commonly used to directly visualize
a patient’s airway during difficult tracheal
intubations, a procedure which involves the
placement of a tube into the trachea
(windpipe) to maintain an open airway or to
serve as a conduit through which to
administer certain drugs. The procedure is
frequently performed in critically injured, ill
or anesthetized patients to facilitate
ventilation of the lungs, and to prevent the
possibility of asphyxiation or airway
obstruction.
Kevin M. McCarthy, President & CEO at
NewportFed is proud to announce the
promotion of Anna Ventura to Vice
President/Loan Processing Manager. In her
new role, she is responsible for the daily
management of the residential and consumer
loan origination and processing departments.
Events = Economic
Development Economic Development is much more
than recruiting new businesses to the
community and creating new jobs. It also
includes efforts that support the existing
business base, generating sales for
businesses so that they can grow and
maintain their presence here. For this
reason, The Chamber of Commerce works
tirelessly to produce large scale
community events so that the local
business community can benefit from the
increased traffic to our town. Simply put,
more people means increased sales and
increased awareness of our community for
potential sales in the future. An event such
as Virtu achieves many goals:
1. Promotes the arts community- we have
a rich and diverse talent pool of local
artists. Virtu provides a venue with an
audience of over 20,000 to expose local
artists and galleries such as the Gallery
on High Street and the Artists
Cooperative Gallery. Arts are an
economic engine in our downtown and
Virtu helps fuel that engine.
2. Generates sales for Retailers and
Restaurants- Patronage at local
restaurants and shops is dramatically
enhanced during the Virtu Art Show.
Many report their highest sales of the
year fall on that weekend as a result.
Artists themselves are also patronizing
the local eateries and staying in our
hotels, generating other sales for our
community.
3. Generates sales for Vendor Businesses-
The Chamber of Commerce pays
thousands for signage, ads, printing,
porta-johns, banners, t-shirts,
coffee/donuts/ice and other products or
services that are needed to produce this
show. All of those monies go to local
businesses that are Chamber members.
4. Raises over $20,000 for The Chamber
of Commerce.
When you support an event such as Virtu
or Riverglow you are doing your part to
support the local economy.
