Art Castings specializes in fine art casting for local and nationally known artists, doing pieces ranging in size from small to large monuments. They use the “lost wax” casting process, which has existed for thou- sands of years. The earliest known lost wax casting was produced in ~3500 BC; the process has changed little. In the first step, an artist creates an original sculpture out of wax, clay, stone, wood, or pottery. The sculpture is coated with a synthetic rubber molding material, which is cut in half to create front and back molds. A piece of art can be reproduced many times using this mold. Next , the mold is coated with a thin layer of wax. The halves are bound together and hot wax is poured to complete the wax replica. Seam lines, pits, bubbles, or other wax imperfections are removed without changing the integrity of the artist’s original. The wax replica is then dipped in a liquid ceramic material, coated with sand, and allowed to dry. This process is repeated several times to create a ceramic shell that can withstand the pressure and extreme temperature associated with filling the ceramic mold with molten bronze. When dried, the ceramic shell is placed in a 900°F kiln, and the wax is melted and reclaimed from the ceramic mold (thus the term "lost wax”). The temperature is then increased to 1200°F to cure the shell. Next, bronze ingots and scrap are placed in a crucible and heated to ~2000°F. The molten bronze is poured into the cured ceramic shell and allowed to cool. The shell is then completely broken away. The casting is sandblasted with glass beads or sand to remove any remaining shell. Pieces of the sculpture are TIG welded, any imperfections are removed, and the artist’s original texture is re-created on the weld lines. The choices for the desired surface finish are endless using the patina process, ranging from traditional bronze to full-color effects. Chamber Named As Convention and Visitors Bureau

We are excited to report that Belgrade now qualifies to apply to the Montana Tour-ism Department for Bed Tax money to market Belgrade to out-of-state visitors. The City of Belgrade recently passed a resolution naming the Belgrade Chamber as the official Convention and Visitors Bureau for Belgrade. We are now moving forward on our very first marketing plan, with the assistance of Armstrong Marketing. The Chamber by-laws also need to be revised to reflect tourism in our objective. The current and proposed by-laws are shown below:

Current Article 1, Section 2: Object: It shall be an incorporated association, or-ganized for the purpose of advancing the commercial, agricultural, industrial and general interest of the City of Belgrade, Montana and its trade area.

Proposed Amended Article 1, Section 2: Object: It shall be an incorporated association, organized for the purpose of advancing the commercial, agricultural, industrial and general interest as well as tourism promotion of the City of Belgrade, Montana, and its trade area.

A vote of the membership will be taken at the May 19 Membership Luncheon (see page 4). This luncheon will highlight the direction of the newly formed Convention and Visitors Bureau Board, and questions will be answered pertaining to the use of the marketing money. All members will also be notified by mail before this meeting.

Board of Directors

Agriculture: The annual Farm Fair is May 5, 6, and 7; this is 11th year the committee has held this great event. Over the course of the 3 days, almost 1000 fourth-grade students will attend with the help of 200 volunteers!

Business Promotions: Customer Appreciation Day is May 9. Look for sales and drawings, plus Rocky Mountain Supply’s big Open House with a free lunch. This committee will most likely be disbanding after this event due to lack of participation. The future of the next Customer Appreciation Day, Crazy Days, and Festival of Lights is undetermined.

Economic Development: The committee will be hosting their second- quarter Business Tour on May 13 at JE Soares (see article on page 4). The committee is also assisting the City of Belgrade in developing a Business Development Plan for the city. They will be working with the Northern Rocky Mountain Economic Development District.

Membership Services: Building Belgrade is just finishing up the year with their final project on May 14. The group will be assisting the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in the morning and the Belgrade Senior Center in the afternoon. Applications are now available for the 2015-2016 Building Bel-grade class. The Annual Golf Scramble will be July 17; the committee is seeking enhanced hole sponsors, hole sponsors, and prize sponsors.

President’s Circle: Do you have a grand opening, anniversary, or other celebration coming up? Would you like the Presidents to attend for a “Rib-bon Cutting”? Contact the Chamber (388-1616) to schedule your event.

Tournament: The committee will host the Class A Division Track Meet on May 15-16 and the State B/C Softball tournament on May 21-23. To volun-teer for either event, contact Rick Phillips ([email protected]).

Transportation: The committee is excited for the mid-summer opening of the new East Belgrade Interchange.

*Meeting times and locations are shown on the Calendar (p. 12).

The transition to “EMV” credit cards is a major issue impacting the retail industry in 2015, and it deals directly with point of sale. As you may know, “EMV” refers to credit cards embed-ded with a microchip programmed with unique digital information. EMV

is an acronym that stands for “Europay, Mastercard, VISA, although other credit card companies are also making the transition. Such cards are also referred to as integrated circuit cards or “chip” cards.

With cyber-attacks affecting major retailers and “mom-and-pops” alike, financial security is a daily concern. EMV, along with encryption and tokenization, will make major steps in securing transactions while assuaging consumer fears. Anoth-er trend to consider is Near Field Communication (NFC), which will enable mobile commerce and contactless EMV use at the point of sale.

The embedded microprocessor helps authenticate the card-holder and issuer, validate that the card was used at the point of sale, and certify the cardholder through unique PIN entry, making the chip-based cards much less susceptible to fraud. Contactless EMV use is enabled via NFC on the card or a de-vice like a smartphone.

Upgrading to EMV and contactless EMV is worthwhile be-cause it will help combat counterfeit acceptance through methods that ensure the card’s rightful owner is the purchas-er. Retailers who decide to upgrade their terminals will re-duce their exposure to disputes for fraud while boosting con-sumer confidence. Although merchant EMV compliance is not mandated, brick-and-mortar retailers who don’t upgrade by October 2015 will be liable for counterfeit and lost and sto-len card fraud.

So many exciting things are happening for Belgrade! Our Economic De-velopment Committee is assisting the City of Belgrade with a Business Development Plan. The City will be working with the Northern Rocky Mountain Economic Development District. Surveys will be sent to busi-nesses to gather information about the business climate and thoughts on where the city should be heading. Those surveys will be used to develop the Business Development Plan. With the new East Belgrade Interchange due to open in June, we will see some new businesses popping up and we need to be ready to assist them.

The second piece of great news is that Belgrade now qualifies to apply for Bed Tax money. This marketing money will allow us to market to travel-ers coming off the interstate as well at those coming in through the air-port. It comes at a welcome time when businesses are worried that the new interchange will take tourists away from Belgrade. The marketing plan will be aimed at contacting tourists before they make their trip so they know what we can provide to make their trip better. Tourists, on a whole, are planners. They like to know what is available to them before-hand and we aim to please. This first year will be a learning experience for us, but we hope in the future as the money we receive grows, our marketing plan too will grow and we will expand to other areas.

The housing market is like the movie Fast and Furious! The growth means more kids and more demands on our school system. It means the need for more services and more demands on our streets and parks. Adding new commercial growth will help us offset those costs.

Remember to vote in the upcoming School Board Election! Research the five people running for the two open slots on the School Board. Having a great School Board is very important, so make your choices wisely.
