    INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION

    y Carabao mango, also known as the

    Manila super mango, is the countrys top

    export variety and is considered one of

    the best mango varieties in the world. Itholds the record of the sweetest mango

    in the world because of its Sweet Elena

    variety. Sweet Elena variety is found inCentral Luzon particularly in Zambales

    province.

    Philippines is the 8th worlds top ten

    mango exporting countries with 2.74% share

    of world export. In Asia, Philippines shares

    4.65% of the total mango production (FAO,2005). It is also the 8th worlds top ten largest

    producers with 985 metric tons. Ninety eight

    (98%) of the worlds export is fresh mangoes

    and the rest is in processed form.

    In 2007, a total of 26.3 m kg fresh

    mangoes were exported to various parts of

    the world while 2.62 m kg were exported

    as dried mango. The rest which is 13.81 m

    kgs were exported in other forms such as

    puree, concentrate and other forms.Although, 93% of the mango supply is

    consumed locally, the major export

    market for fresh mangoes are Hongkong,

    China and Japan while for processed

    mango products include US , Singapore,

    Germany, New Zealand and Canada.

    y As of 2008, the total mango production

    area is 186,770 has distributed in the

    various regions of the country. Central

    Luzon with 33, 200 hectares planted to

    mango is the largest producer which

    accounts for 18.15% of the countrys totalproduction areas followed by Ilocos

    region with a total of 22,099 has, third is

    Region 4A

    with 14,832 the fourth isCagayan Valley with10,100 has.

    However, in terms of the topproducing provinces, Pangasinan has the

    largest production area of 15,263 has,

    Davao del Sur has 13,292 has, Batangas

    has 11,970 has, Nueva Ecija has 11,103has, Bulacan with 8,835 has and Zambales

    has 7,883 has. In Central Luzon, areas

    planted to mango are still low inA

    urora,Tarlac, Pampanga and Bataan.

    Although most of the R & D activities of

    RMTU is on mango, other efforts are also

    in cashew, native chicken and pig, organicvegetable production, biofuel-sorghum

    and jatropha, coastal resource

    management and socio economicresearch.
